Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: As I am basing my storyline for my children’s book on Goldilocks and the 3 bears. I research the price range of the existing goldilocks books, most of the books cost around £7.00-£10.00. I also researched Charlie and Lola books as they inspired my style of images. Charlie and Lola use a mixture of realistic images and cartoon images. Most of their books have a price range of £5.00-£8.00. My book will be made digitally on a computer so It will cost to print out pages of coloured ink. I’m looking to sell 150-250 copies a month. One copy of my book would cost around £4.50 to produce and print. So I’m thinking a suitable price my book will cost around £7.99 so that I would get a £3.49 profit.

Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:

There are lots of things to consider in this project.

I research the price

range of the existing goldilocks books, most of the books cost around £7.00-£10.00. I also researched Charlie and Lola books as they inspired my style of images. Charlie and Lola use a

mixture of realistic images and cartoon images. Most of their books have a price range of £5.00-£8.00. My book will be made digitally on a computer so It will cost to print out pages of coloured ink. I’m

looking to sell 150-250 copies a month. One copy of my book would cost around £4.50 to produce and print. So I’m thinking a suitable price my

book will cost around £7.99 so that I would get a £3.49 profit.Available resources:

I am going to use Adobe Photoshop to produce my images. I will use features on Photoshop such as the polygon lasso tool and the shape and warp tools to create

the setting and characters I want. I will need a printer loaded with coloured ink and paper. I will need access to Google for any research or images that I could modify for my final product

Page 2: Planning booklet

Quantity: To start off with, I want to sell my product to quite a niche market as it’s a story which has already been

told but with a few adaptions and modifications. I want to produce 6000 copies all over England If it sells well I will make 15000-2000 copies. Want to sell around 150-250 copies a month.

Audience and Target Market: I want to aim my children’s book towards children the age of 6+, as my book contains some scenes,

which are unsuitable for some readers, as it contains some references to mild violence. My book isn’t aimed towards any specific age, it is aimed at both genders, as both boys and girls are

read fairy tales stories growing up. It is one of the most popular fairy tales in the English language it is often used as a bedtime story.

My book is aimed towards any class, my book doesn’t contain any content which relates to a specific class therefore is open to any class.

Quality Factors: To make my product as good as it can possibly be I need to put a lot of effort into planning, and into

every page I produce. I also need to check thoroughly for spelling mistakes and get someone else to check it again in case

I’ve missed any mistakes. I will also need someone to give me some constructive feedback so that I can improve my product to

make it even more engaging for the reader. I need to make sure I attend every session and if I miss a session for some reason I need to put the

extra time in to get the work done. I have given my session plan some spare time at the end to make any final improvements, checks, and

refinement time. I need to make sure I stick to my design style throughout my book. The books Charlie and Lola, have

inspired me to mix realistic images with cartoon images, this is the style I want to keep consistent throughout my book. I also want to keep the text style and font the same throughout my book.

Codes of Practice:

The publisher should be aware of the author’s moral rights. The publisher should give the author the rights they deserve some of these things are.

Page 3: Planning booklet

Adequate time should be allowed in the publishing timetable to permit discussion of the need for any waiver, communication is very important, and you need to discuss things such as issues you come across.

The publisher must not cancel a contract without good and proper reason in any such case, however, the publisher must give the author sufficiently detailed reasons for rejection. Some of the most common reasons are time, standard and quality, and Defamation or illegality- the publisher is under no obligation to publish a work that there is reason to believe it is illegal, low quality or delayed.

Where appropriate the publisher must give the author a proper opportunity to Share in the success of the work

Copyright: I used some pictures on google, to get the realistic parts of my images. I owe money to the people who collected these images. To protect their copyright standards as it’s their

images I’m using. For example, I got an image of a fireplace for the 3 bear’s living room, which I collected from:

http://www.chimneysweeping.services/fireplace-maintenance/.

Ethical Issues: Christians may believe wrong to teach/read a story about a girl breaking into a house and stealing

belongings as they might be influenced by the actions. Christians and pacifists are possibly against children being exposed to violence whether its mild or

heavy, in this case its extremely mild, as violence is only suggested, but I have to take all considerations as some ethic backgrounds might find this book inappropriate for their child and may be offended.

As Goldilocks the little girl is eaten in a children’s book. Goldilocks has committed sins of ignoring her parents, stealing, and trespassing into someone else’s home and is punished extravagantly by being eaten by a wolf.

This narrative teaches children morals and considerations, so despite the ethical issues I’ve talked about above, it is a story which teaches children right from wrong.

Resources:A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.

If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Resource:Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it?

 Photoshop  yes

 Printer  yes

 google  yes

 paper  yes

 script  yes

computer  yes

Production Schedule:Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Each session is a half day of college.

I am going to create two pages each session until session 7, which I will create an important section of my book (the ending), it will take the longest to create, as there will be an image spread on a double page.

Then in session 8 and 9 I will finish off any pages that are not finished and triple check each page and make any improvements that are needed.

Then in session 10 I will create a front cover for my finished product

Session 1:

Page 1Image-In the 1st half of this session I will create the 1st page of my children’s book. This page will include my main character goldilocks and it will be set outside her small cottage near the dark woods. Goldilocks will be wearing a rucksack, as she is on her way to school. She will be on a path, which leads two ways, one route is

Page 6: Planning booklet

from her home in the distance to her school a sign will be marked “5miles to …school” school will not be visible. The other route will diverge from the original path to the dark woods. Goldilocks’ mother is in the house but not visible, a speech bubble from the house reads, “keep away from the woods Goldilocks.” The image will be shot from a long distance. Goldilocks will look sad with longing expression, as she wants to go into the woods. Goldilocks will be wearing a blue dress and she will have long golden locks. Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- One day Goldilocks was on her way to school, her mother had told her she was not allowed to go through the dark woods, Goldilocks wondered why.Page 2Image-In the 2nd half of this session I will create the 2nd page of my children’s book. It will also be set outside. The house will not be visible this time, but the main character Goldilocks is still present wearing the same attire as the previous page, but this time she is greeted by little red Riding hood who is carrying a basket full of bread and is clutching a handful of flowers. Little Red has brown hair and is wearing a red hood. A speech bubble from Little Red reads “on the way to my grandmothers through the woods, I passed the most peculiar cottage made of sweets.” Goldilocks in another speech bubble replies “I’m not supposed to go in the wood but I guess a quick look won’t hurt anybody”

Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- On the way to school Goldilocks passes Little Red Riding Hood, who is off to her grandmothers. Little Red tells Goldilocks she has just passed a peculiar cottage in the woods made of sweets, but Goldilocks didn’t believe this and went to look.Session 2:

Page 3Image- In the 1st part of this session, I will create the 3rd page of my children’s book. It will be set outside a

Page 7: Planning booklet

cottage in the woods it will be a long distance shot. The cottage will be made of sweets such as gingerbread men and candy canes, and an iced topped roof. A few trees closest around the house will be lollypops the rest will be trees. Goldilocks will be stood in front of the house in the same attire as she is in the previous pages. She will also look in extreme disbelief and happiness at the house, with wide eyes and a wide open mouth. There will be a small sign in front of the cottage it will read “hansel and Gretel’s house” this will be crossed out and a bigger sign in front will read “house of the 3 bears”.Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- Goldilocks sees the house made of sweets and can’t believe her eyes so she steps inside.

Page 7Image- In the 2nd part of this session, I will create the 7th page of my children’s book. It will set in the same scene as the 1t part of the session in the woods outside the cottage made of sweets. I did these pages in the same session as they are set in the same place and I can reuse the background and then I will only have to make some minor changes, this saves some time. The only differences this time is that Goldilocks is not in this shot instead the 3 bears are. They will be in ascending height order baby bear, mummy bear, and then daddy bear who will be opening the door to the cottage, and the shot will be a long distance shot but closer up than page 3.Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- Soon after, the bears arrived home …

Session 3:

Page 4 Image- The 1st part of this session, I will create the 4th page of my children’s book. It will be set inside

the cottage. In the kitchen there will be a large table an old stove and various pieces of kitchen furniture some of which will be slightly warped to give a feel of the cottage being unusual and unique. Also parts of the furniture will be realistic made with real material using a clipping mask on adobe Photoshop, where others will be made from scratch using shapes. I got inspiration for this style from Charlie and Lola. This page will contain 4 images. I got inspiration for how I will layout my images and text from the book the Gruffalo. In the Gruffalo the images and text are laid out in a variety of ways, some text in on the image some text is around the image, some images fill 2 pages and some pages have a few small images presented. All the images will be set in the kitchen. For the 1st image it will be a long distance shot showing the whole room. The will be 3 mugs filled with hot Chocolate laid out on the table, 1 big blue mug with steam, 1 pink smaller mug, and 1 white mug even smaller containing whip cream and marshmallows. There will be a speech bubble coming from goldilocks saying “Oh! Hot chocolate my favourite”. The next 3 images will be a close up of goldilocks trying each mug of hot chocolate. The first image she will be disgusted with as it’s too hot. A speech bubble will come from goldilocks saying, “Ouch that was too hot”. Then the next image she will also be disgusted as it’s too cold. A speech bubble will come from goldilocks saying, “Eww! That was too cold” Then the next image will be a Close up of Goldilocks smiling whilst drinking hot chocolate, speech bubble of Goldilocks saying “mmm! That was just right” and she will have a moustache of whip cream.

Text-The text will be laid out above the picture with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- She sees 3 hot chocolate mugs laid out on the table in the kitchen.

Page 9: Planning booklet

1st Section of page 8Image- The 2nd section of the 3rd session, I will be creating the 1st section of page 8. Which is when the bears see the empty mugs on the table. It will be set in the kitchen, the same setting as the 1st part of this session. This means I can reuse parts of the background so it saves some time. The three bears will be stood in same order as they were in page 7 as it’s the next scene, they will be stood in ascending height order; baby bear, mummy bear, and then daddy bear, and will all look angry and slightly confused. The mugs on the table will be empty. A speech bubble from daddy bear will say “someone has been drinking our hot chocolate” another speech bubble from baby bear say and there have drunk mine all up. Baby bear will look sad with a frown

Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- The bear’s see that someone has drank their hot chocolateSession 4: Page 5Image- The 1st part of this session, I will create the 5th page of my children’s book. It will be set inside the cottage. In the living room there will be a fireplace, a rug, a few picture frames and 3 chairs in descending height order. The 1st chair will be big and made out of liquorice and the 2nd chair will be slightly smaller and made out of marshmallow and the 3rd will be very small and made out of gingerbread. Like page 4 various pieces of furniture in the living room which will be slightly warped to give a feel of the cottage being unusual and unique. Also parts of the furniture will be realistic made with real material using a clipping mask on adobe Photoshop, where others will be made from scratch using shapes. This page will contain 4 images. For the 1st image it will be a long distance shot showing the whole room and goldilocks looking at the unusual chairs. Then for the 2nd image is a close up Goldilocks is sat in the big Chair with an unhappy face, “This chair is too big and hard”. For the 3rd image goldilocks will be sat in the medium sized chair with an uncomfortable expression, “This chair is still too big and too soft”, and finally the 4th image goldilocks will be sat on the chair with a happy relaxed expression as it’s a comfy seat.” “This chair is just right”. On the 5th image is a long distance shot of Goldilocks who will be sat on the floor crying with bits of broken chairs and gingerbread men around her.

Page 10: Planning booklet

Text-The text will be laid out on the image, it will be positioned on the flooring at the bottom of the page with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- Goldilocks was very full after drinking all that hot chocolate and she needed a rest she went into the next room to try out the 3 different chairs, 1 big chair made of liquorice, 1 medium sized chair made of marshmallow and 1 small chair made of gingerbread. 3nd section of page 8Image- In the 2nd section of the 4th session, I will be creating the 2nd section of page 8. A speech bubble from daddy bear will say “someone has been sitting in our chairs” another speech bubble from baby bear says “and mine is broken” and baby bear stars to cry.Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- The bears see that someone has been sat in all their chairs and that one is broken

Session 5:

Page 6Image- In this 1st section of session 5, I will create the 6th page of my book. It will be set in the. There will be three single beds presented against the wall. 1 big bed, 1 medium sized bed, and 1 small bed. Various pieces of the living-room furniture will be slightly warped to give a feel of the cottage being unusual and unique.

Page 11: Planning booklet

Also parts of the furniture will be realistic made with real material using a clipping mask on adobe Photoshop, where others will be made from scratch using shapes. This page will contain 4 images. The 1st image will contain bedroom it will be a long distance shot showing the whole bedroom, including goldilocks looking very tired as she will be yawning and will have dark rings underneath her eyes. The 5th image is a close up of Goldilocks who has fallen asleep in the small bed.Text-The text will be laid out… with font size 11pt and font style (BanglaSangamMN) as it’s an easily readable font. It will be black because I want my book to be consistent in style and it will be black on every page. It will be easy to read if its black over the image It will have 15pt amount of space between each line because I want my font to be spaced out so its big enough to readText reads- Goldilocks was really tired now so she went upstairs and tried out the 3 beds 1 big bed 1 medium sized bed and 1 small bed.Page 9Image- In the 2nd section of the 5th session, I will be creating the 3rd section of page 8. Health and safety:Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.

Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.

Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

Page 15: Planning booklet

Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?

 Water away from electronics

Keep lids on water bottles, only consume water, as other products contain ingredients that could damage the computer if it spills. All spills should be wiped clean. If possible avoid drinking near the computer at all.

Tripping hazard

Keep all bags and other belonging underneath your desk and out of the way, to prevent people, or yourself from tripping over it.

 Wires

Keep wires untangled and out the way make sure they work correctly and are safe to use. Avoid touching the wires as they have electricity running through them they should not be played with.

Not to close to screen

Don’t sit too close to the screen as it could hurt or damage your eyes. Sit back with your head at least half a meter away.

 Enough breaks

Have enough breaks as possible so that the computer doesn’t strain your eyes, around every 1hr have a 5min break at least from a computer screen.
