This latest performance geodisic dome design from Saunders can sleep 3/4 persons in the ripstop nylon inner tent; supported by 4 high tensile shock-corded aluminium flexi poles that are secured in position with a simple ring and pin method. This very light heavyweight has two zipped 'no-seeurn' net doors in addition to the two usual doors to permit cross flow ventilation control; complete with 4 useful storage pockets and a hanging loop. Complete with high performance trayed aquatight taped P.U. coated ground-sheet.
The non-obstrusive green ripstop throw over P.U. and metallic coated aquatight taped flysheet has two zipped entrances into two bell ends, one of which is enlarged with the support of an additional pole; complete with vents, corded elastic pegging points and all the, now expected, Saunders quality features- this tent can only enhance our reputation.

My night's sleep at the mid camp was disturbed when the finish tent flipped upside down in a violent rain squall (it wasn't a Saunders tent). I crawled out of my own perfectly weather-P.roof tent Qt was a Saunders) to see four storm-tossed aluminium poles thrashing in mid-air, hke the legs of an overturned beetle, gradually dismantling themselves section by clattering section. Only one remaining tent peg prevented the nylon fabric being sucked away into the blackness of Warnscale Bottom. Once the finish tent beast had finished its death throes and been laid to rest, I lay awake deciding how to shorten the Day 2 courses.
The decision to shorten the courses was left as late as possible by cancelling the chasing start. This left us just enough time to amend the description sheets by crossing out some checkpoints, and transferring some classes to a shorter course, On the past prepared alternative bad weather description sheets - but these never got used, so after a few years I gave up the practice). Before the decision was made, the wind and rain had eased off, and the cloud was slowly lifting, but for safety's sake I had to assume things would worsen again. In fact the weather did worsen, so I have no regrets about shortening the courses. Judgin!if by the relieved smiles of finishers on Day 2, it was oh the whole a popular dec•sion with competitors. Less happy were some of the long-suffering marshals from the Backpackers Club, who man the checkpoints each year. Due to the revised courses, some of the checkpoints had no customers at all on day 2. My apologies to those marshals who endured a cold, damp, lonely day.

Access permissions continue to be the main problem faced by mountain marathon organisers. Conservation of sensitive wildlife is becoming more and more of an issue. In the Lake District, the National trust and National Park Authorities are familiar with mountain marathons (the Saunders is now something of a tradition) and do not over-react at the prospect of such a large event taking to the fells. Fortunately for us, they understand what the event involves, and prefer to work with the organisers in order to control the event and keep the courses away from sensitive areas. Unfortunately, conservation gives other landowners the perfect excuse to deny access, even when they would be pushed to say exactly what they are trying to protect, and how it would be damaged by a mountain marathon.
The Northern Fells around Skiddaw, and the North Western Fells around Grasmoor are permanently out-of-bounds to the Saunders in early July due to ground-nesting birds (as identified by English Nature). No problem with this - in the case the birds really are there, and we probably would disturb them, so we are happy to take the event elsewhere.
Are the courses getting longer each year? Here are the course lengths from the last 5 events -straight line in kilometres. They do not include metres of ascent, or the roughness of the ground, however these factors are fairly constant from year to year.

Thank you for competing in this year's Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. Your dedication to this event over the years, is the reason for its continued success.
I would also like to thank Martin Bagness and Charlotte Webb for their invaluable input; Alan Stiling and those members of the Backpackers Club who so reliably man all the check-points; also all those voluntary helpers plus all others who contribute to the success of the Event. Including yourselves. It is worth noting that this year's Event was fully subscribed by the end of last November, so for those of you who wish to secure places for the 1999 SLMM please consider these notes to be tantamount to the firing of a starting pistol. For those of you who may wish to enter next year's Event, please find an application form with this booklet, and again please note that there will be no acknowledgement as this would otherwise add to the enormous burden of our mail. Those wishing confirmation of acceptance should check with their bank statements that cheques have been cleared. Those applicants who we are unable to accept, because the Event is full, will receive the return of their cheques by return of post. To those of you who become anxious in respect of the non-receipt of details as the date draws near, may we remind you that these are usually sent out at about two weeks before the Event because in the past many distant competitors from the event have complained that local entrants would otherwise have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the terrain.
I am sorry that all the 'T' Shirts were sold out early, but I would point out that all those who ordered them in advance received them at the same time that they received the Venue details. There are only a limited number of 'T' Shirts available for sale at the Event, but you can be sure of securing yours by completing the order form on the reverse side of your Event application form.

~a_few notes for newcomer.s to the Mountain Marathon scene
Classic Mountain Marathons are usually of two day duration, day one often has the longest courses and is usually the most demanding. This to leave a shorter and less demanding second day. As most competitors travel long distances to take part. Competitors are required to complete two severe days mountain navigation in teams of two. An exception being the "Saunders Klets classic" which is a solo event. Competitors must carry all the equipment necessary for the compulsory overnight stop. A typical equipment list includes the following:-
Per pair Food for 36 hours and a cooking stove. A Tent (bivvies, formal or otherwise are not acceptable).
Per competitor Sleeping bag. - Rucsac. - Appropriate clothing i.e. thermal bodywear, lycra tights and thermal overjacket etc., - Waterproof jacket and overtrousers. - Map. - Torch. -Whistle.- Compass.- Survival bag.- Emergency rations.
In order to complete the courses as quickly as possible, the emphasis is on high quality lightweight equipment. For example, a two person tent weighing 2.5 kilos or less and a sleeping bag of less than a kilo. Top teams carry a starting load ofabout 9-121bs. per person, including food.
