Happy End-of-Summer!

This is my favorite time of year in Michiana. No, not because it’s football season (although a big factor), but because we have some of our best weather, fall colors and great new programs from PBS and WNIT.

WNIT’s regional talent competition, “Michiana’s Rising Star,” was fantastic. I hope you watched! I can’t say enough to thank our staff members and dedicated Board of Directors for their hard work. While we are extremely happy with this first year’s effort, we are already making adjustments and plans for next year.

For those of you who missed the program, please sample the talent of our finalists. Go to our website: www.wnit.org/risingstar.

In your last Planner, I asked for input to a potential program schedule change. After reviewing your comments, it appears the change will work. Starting in September, look for the PBS NewsHour to move to 6pm, followed by “Experience Michiana” with Gordy Young at 7pm. But, for those who still prefer the 7-8pm time period for NewsHour, you may watch it at that time on the WNIT INFocus channel, 34.2. Thanks to all of you who provided your comments and suggestions. What other station would ask you for your input? You will also be pleased to know that both the PBS NewsHour and Charlie Rose will be expanding to weekend editions on WNIT.

Another recent local hit for WNIT is “Our Town: Elkhart.” I love this series of “Our Town” programs because WNIT recruits community videographers to show viewers their town through their eyes, not ours. It’s a unique and valuable perspective. We premiered the program at a reception in Elkhart’s Lerner Theater Crystal Ballroom and on air during our August membership drive.

Now, looking forward to October, WNIT takes great pleasure to honor one of the founders of Michiana Public Broadcasting with a special program, “Legends of our Time: Ernestine Raclin.” Mrs. Raclin has done so much for our own organization, and her philanthropy has made such an impactful difference with many of our community non-profit and educational organizations. Please watch the story of this classy, caring, remarkable woman.

As usual, I have too much to share and not enough space. Perhaps the editor of the Planner will give me two pages next issue? Happy viewing, everyone!

Sincerely,

Greg Giczi President & General Manager

“The Empire of Grandeur” (1915-1919)In the early 20th century, America has a dozen national parks, but they are a haphazard patchwork of special places under the supervision of different federal agencies. “War and Peace/ The New Latinos” During the World War II years and those that follow, Latino Americans serve their new country by the hundreds of thousands — yet still face discrimination and a fight for civil rights in the United States. When the thrilling “Adventures of Superman” is broad-cast on the new medium of television, America’s first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength.

“Great Power, Great Responsibility” (1959-1977) In the 1960s, a new breed of superhero emerges in pages of Marvel Comics. On August 2, WNIT crowned spoken-word artist Dara Marquez as Michiana’s Rising Star! Dara, a Saint Mary’s College student, received a $1,000 cash prize plus the opportunity to appear on several WNIT programs. Singer Brandon Williams was runner- up and received a $500 prize and program appearances. Ballroom dancers Matthew Smith and Kate McGowan captured third place.

Rising Star was a search for the brightest and best talent in the entire Michiana region. The competition opened in January with over 155 applicants and culminated with the top five performers from each of five regions – Benton Harbor, South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw and Culver – competing on WNIT channel 34.1 each evening from July 28 through August 2.

Congratulations to all of our contestants, their families and friends for making Michiana’s Rising Star a resounding success!

Ernestine Raclin: Leading the WayIn this brand-new documentary, WNIT’s cameras focus on her story of resourcefulness, courage, undaunted optimism and belief in herself and her community as only Ernie could deliver. Her abilities as a business savvy executive helped 1st Source Bank become one of the most successful, privately-owned financial institutions in the country. She paved the way for women in business, just as her volunteer activities led the way in economic development, arts, education and human services.

The half-hour program airs on Thursday, September 26 at 9pm and Sunday, September 29 at 4:30pm and Monday, September 30 at 7:30pm on 34.1.

Resounding EarthThe University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center and WNIT will present the world premiere of “Resounding Earth” by renowned composer Augusta Read Thomas this fall on WNIT. “Resounding Earth” is a 28-minute work for a percussion quartet featuring more than 125 bells from a wide variety of cultures and historical periods. Thomas composed the piece and the Chicago based Third Coast Percussion ensemble performed it live on September 30, 2012, at DeBartolo’s Leighton Hall.

For the one-hour documentary, WNIT interviewed Augusta Reed Thomas along with the Third Coast Percussion ensemble to explore the musicality and insight into the making of each movement. In addition, WNIT interviewed Dr. Douglas Hall, Notre Dame associate professor in the college of engineering, to discuss the science of metallurgy that constitutes the various sounds made by bells. Anna Thompson, executive director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, provided the University’s perspectives on the importance of encouraging and celebrating the human spirit through the performing and cinematic arts.

Composed in collaboration with Third Coast Percussion, “Resounding Earth” gave Thomas the opportunity to work with the four young musicians whom she met while they were studying at Northwestern University – Owen Clayton Condon, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin and David Skidmore.

“Resounding Earth” will be broadcast on WNIT 34.1 on Sunday, October 13 at 3pm and Saturday, October 26 at 4pm. Also, on 34.2 on Thursday, September 19 at 10pm.

South Bend Medical Foundation: 100 Years of ExcellenceFor over 100 years, the South Bend Medical Foundation has been providing laboratory services to the South Bend medical community and beyond. SOUTH BEND MEDICAL FOUNDATION: 100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE premieres on Wednesday, September 18 at 9pm and repeats on Sunday, September 22 at 2pm on 34.1.

The 2nd Annual WNIT Kids Club Day in the Park was held on June 20 at St. Patrick’s County Park and was a resounding success. Over 400 children and parents enjoyed kid-friendly games and ac-tivities, a story corner, portable disc golf, a nature station hosted by Evie Kirkwood, face painting, and a visit from special guest The Cat in the Hat! Every child attending the event went home with an age-appropriate book.

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.

Mike Wargo

This month WNIT shines the supporter spotlight on WNIT Board member Mike Wargo.  Mike is serving his second term on the WNIT Board and has been a member of the Governance Committee and the Talent Show Task Force where he suggested the idea for “Michiana’s Rising Star,” the exciting and ground-breaking area talent show which took place in the WNIT Ganey Studio at the end of July and early August. “Michiana’s Rising Star” was two years in the making, and Mike says he personally enjoys events which make a mark.  He also served on the Budget, Audit and Finance Committee.

In addition to his Board of Directors service, Mike is a member of the WNIT Directors’ Circle and serves as the COO of Hospice Foundation. WNIT salutes his service, creativity and great support.
