A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television
Hello to my favorite viewer/member … that’s you!
Each viewer is important to WNIT. We know you are watching for all the right reasons and we want to make sure we respond to you when you contact us. Thank you for letting WNIT be an important part of your life. I find it very easy to write my bi-monthly letter to you. The tough part is editing it down to one page because there is always so much I want to share.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the upcoming Royal Wedding. You will find exceptional coverage of this grand event on WNIT as PBS teams with the BBC starting Monday, May 14 through the wedding day on Saturday, May 19.
On Tuesday, May 22, WNIT will feature the two-hour kick-off event for The Great American Read. This series will air in eight episodes in the fall, exploring the 100 best-loved novels voted by the public and celebrating the power of books and the joy reading brings to our lives. I’m an avid reader – I wonder if any of my favorite books made the list? I’ll be watching.
One of the most viewed programs of the year, the National Memorial Day Concert returns on Monday, May 27. Enjoy this wonderful program and keep in your hearts all of our veterans whom we honor.
Meet our latest honorees in our WNIT local production, Legends of Michiana: Rebecca and Michael Kubacki. They each have an incredibly interesting story to tell of their love, business success and community service. Our first broadcast will be Thursday, May 31 at 8pm.
On Monday, June 4 at 8pm, enjoy another WNIT local production as we continue our tour of Michiana with Our Town: Nappanee. It’s one of Elkhart County’s great communities known for its annual Apple Festival, Amish Acres, wonderfully crafted local furniture, and its strong, hardworking people. Think you know all about Nappanee? I bet you’ll learn something new.
Our June membership drive runs from the 1st through the 13th. Encourage someone who doesn’t currently support WNIT to watch … and give.
And, speaking of giving – thanks for doing what you do! Please consider our sustaining plan to make it easier on your budget. I can’t express enough how appreciative we are of your support. Thank you, again.
Happy May & June,
Greg Giczi President & General Manager

Our Town: NappaneeWith help and a little training from WNIT’s professional, award-winning production team, ordinary citizens become volunteer videographers. Armed with their own cameras, they create a scrapbook of the stories that make their town special. WNIT’s staff edits these video recordings and combines them with interviews of the volunteer videographers to professionally tell the stories. The result is a one-hour documentary that reflects the emotional ties of the people who live in, love and are passionate about their town.
OUR TOWN: NAPPANEE premieres Monday, June 4 at 8pm with a repeat airing at 9:30pm.
Royal Wedding Join WNIT for ROYAL WEDDING WATCH, a special nightly series on the marriage of Prince Henry of Wales and American Meghan Markle. Coming nightly from London, ROYAL WEDDING WATCH will be hosted by American news anchor Meredith Vieira and British television presenter Matt Baker, who will update viewers on the preparations for the much-anticipated wedding.
Premiering Monday-Thursday, May 14-17, 10:00-11:00 pm and Friday, May 18, 10:30-11:30 pm, WNIT will air a five-part nightly series of special programs leading up to the live broadcast of the royal wedding on Saturday morning, May 19 on our station.
WNIT Day of Giving 2018To continue the momentum from the 2017 Give Local SJC campaign, WNIT is excited to announce that on May 31 we will celebrate our very own Day of Giving. Thanks to a generous $10,000 challenge grant from the Shirley and Jack Appleton Estate, WNIT is able to offer another opportunity to increase your donations in supporting our mission. The Appleton Estate will match all dollars raised up to $10,000 during the first ever WNIT Day of Giving. The Appletons were long-time supporters of WNIT and made provisions in their estate to support the station and many other local causes after their passing.
By joining us for this special opportunity, you will make your donation to WNIT go further! On May 31, starting at 12am and for the next 24 hours, go to www.wnit.org/dayofgiving and use your credit or debit card to donate to WNIT to help us surpass this $10,000 challenge. Checks, gifts of stock or securities and other forms of donation may be made up to May 31 by contacting Betsy Fulnecky at 574-675-9648 x. 365 or [email protected]. Gifts may also be mailed to WNIT at 300 West Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN 46601, but must be received by May 31 to count towards this challenge. Please note “WNIT Day of Giving” when sending your gift by mail.
WNIT Public Television recognizes the legacy of the Appletons and thanks you for all your generosity. It is only through your continued support and special opportunities such as the WNIT Day of Giving that we are able to bring you iconic PBS programs, local programming that impacts our community and remain Michiana’s largest classroom and storyteller. Thank you, through your gift, for helping WNIT to inspire, educate and unify the people and communities that we serve.

June 2018 Spring Membership CampaignWNIT’s Membership Campaign begins Friday, June 1 and runs through Wednesday, June 13. Our on-air membership campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.
Remember to check out the diverse line-up of new pledge programming. There’s something for everyone! And be sure to tell your family and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important and encourage them to do the same.
It’s Viewers Like You who make a real difference to everyone in our community. Thank you for supporting WNIT!

WNIT Continues Legends of Michiana series with Rebecca & Michael Kubacki!Legends of Michiana is all about telling the story of individuals who have gone above to positively impact the lives of Michiana residents. WNIT’s next Legends documentary will give viewers an inside look into the lives of Rebecca & Michael Kubacki.
A two-term member of the Indiana General Assembly, Rebecca Espinoza Kubacki has been a champion for women’s causes, children and human affairs efforts and support for Latino women. The former CEO of Lake City Bank, Michael Kubacki has had a distinguished career in the banking industry, which eventually brought him back to his home state of Indiana.
Married for 44 years, the Kubackis have both individually and together taken on leadership roles in supporting business and economic growth in the region, improving health and welfare of residents, supporting women, children and family issues, as well as improving their community both in Kosciusko County and throughout the state of Indiana.
WNIT is proud to present its newest installment of the Legends of Michiana series, featuring Rebecca and Michael Kubacki, on Thursday, May 31 at 8pm, Sunday, June 17 at 6pm, and again, Monday, June 18 at 10pm.
New Our Town Documentary Coming to WNIT in June! There are many little towns that exist in the tiniest corners of our world, and also in the tiniest nooks of our minds. We drive by them in the blink of an eye, or sometimes label them “flyover” towns. However, there is something these overlooked places have in common: they are made special by the magic and tradition of the people that live there and treasure them. WNIT sets out to discover these towns and bring the beauty and uniqueness of the communities to life.
WNIT will continue its popular Our Town series by diving into a town that is known for its annual Apple Festival, Amish Acres and rich heritage of strong, hardworking people. Gain an all-access, inside look into Nappanee, Indiana and find out what makes this community so warm, inviting and unique.
WNIT proudly presents its newest documentary in the Our Town series, Our Town: Nappanee on Monday, June 4 at 8pm & 9:30pm on WNIT Channel 34.1.
PBS Celebrates the Joy of Reading with The Great American Read New Series and Nationwide Campaign Asks Readers to Choose America’s Best-Loved BookThe Great American Read, premiering Tuesday, May 22 at 8pm, is a new eight-part television series and nationwide campaign that explores the joy of books and the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved books, chosen by the public. Designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, The Great American Read encompasses the eight-part PBS series, community reading programs and special events, and a wide range of digital and social media initiatives. Featuring testimonials from notable figures from the entertainment, sports, news and literary worlds, the series culminates in the first-ever national vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Book.”
The Great American Read will launch on May 22 with a multi-platform digital and social campaign leading up to the reveal of the 100 books selected by the American public and an advisory panel of literary professionals. Beginning with the two-hour kick-off event, the high-energy, hosted documentary special will feature appearances by celebrities and everyday Americans passionately advocating for and explaining their personal connections to their favorite books. Voting and social media engagement will continue throughout summer 2018, with six episodes of the series exploring the nominated books through themes such as “Being American,” “Heroes,” “Growing Up,” “What We Do for Love” and more. Throughout the summer, PBS stations will partner with local organizations and booksellers in the community to activate and inspire the next generation of readers through library, education and community initiatives. As summer turns to fall, voting will close and America’s top 10 books will be revealed counting down to America’s Best-Loved in the final episode of the series in September 2018.

Greg and Mary both have a passion for and have been involved with the Boys and Girls Club, Real Services, United Way, YWCA, DTSB, South Bend Heritage, The Music Village and continue to have an interest in and try to contribute to local government. They moved downtown eight years ago and love being a part of a diverse and interesting neighborhood where they can walk everywhere.
In the summer of 1973, Greg and Mary tuned in to WNIT for its coverage on the Watergate hearings and have enjoyed our programming ever since. They believe our programming has an impact on the community by covering political events in a non-partisan fashion and provides intelligent, educational programs. They can be found viewing just about everything on Masterpiece, Washington Week in Review, PBS NewsHour, series by Ken Burns such as Vietnam and the National Parks, and several musical events and concerts.
WNIT is extremely thankful for Greg and Mary’s ongoing support of public television and their commitment to our community.
