WAt my very first General Assembly I was nervous. It was in Estonia and I was so afraid of the older, smarter and more experienced delegates. They could talk hours about dif-ferent treaties and conventions. I decided to sit still, listen to the discussion and wait for the coffee break. On the inside I was dying to participate in the debate and voice my own opinion. However, I did not. I thought it was better to stay

quiet, than to say something that was wrong. ‘Better safe than sorry’, you know. At some point I really wanted to make a point, but I postponed it over and over again, until it was too late.

Afterwards I regretted not say-ing anything, my point would have been as good as anyone else’s.Delegates, don’t do the same mistake as I and probably many others did. Your fellow delegates are only hu-

man; trust me, they are as nervous as you are. EYP gives you the chance to stand up and express your thoughts, with all the other participants’ eyes on you. It would be a shame to throw away that kind of opportunity. As one certain gentleman always tells me ‘Fortune favours the brave.’Bonne chance!

EYP Theatre

Beer, beer and some more beer. That must have been the delegates’ first impression when entering the ‘Casi-no’. The overall presence of Bavarian delegates was evident- many different kinds of sausage, huge loafs of bread and even blue-white checked plates. Despite the great amount of food, after a quarter-hour there were yawn-ing and full bellies at many tables.

Beside the variety of taste adventure, the Journo-team was delighted with the warm plum jam pasteries pro-vided by one of the Bavarian delega-tions and of course with the Dutch caramel-filled waffles. On one ta-

Taj Mahon, Grand Candy, the Great Ball of China, the Roman Colosseum, the statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, the lighthouse of Alexandria, the Golden Great Bridge, the Ru-dom and the Great Hairy Reef. What does those places have in common?

As bizarre as it seems they were all transformed into sketchs by the dele-gates during EYP theatre, on Wednes-day evening. Everyone was curious to see what their fellow delegates had come up with. Journalist Rebecca and organiser Wiebke were hosting the

show together. ‘It was my first time moderating. It was a lot of fun, but I guess it was because I like scream-ing.’ Rebecca comments afterwards.

Although the performances of the young actors were accompanied by thick fog, an indescribable smell from a nearby campfire as well as a young gentleman loudly inviting everyone to his pyjama party, the delegates succeded in entertaining each other. They proved that amateur theatre do not have to be unprofessional.

ble, delegates had arranged their food in a very European way: Muf-fins, cakes and other delicacies were topped with mini-flags of European countries like spain or Germany; a nice idea to apply the sentence ‘The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’ into European integration.

Many delegates like the Ahaus- and Detmold delegation were well prepared for regiovillage, having brought not only lots of food but also printed t-shirts, postcards and even self-made videos. Organiser Jutta commented on the regiovillage with one word: ‘Deluxe!’. Indeed,

that’s what most people at the ses-sion thought about it as well – to sum it up, a successful and tasty evening!

As Max noted in his video interview, and as city-dwelling EYPers keep noticing with awe, Wasserkuppe is a breathtakingly (do remember to breathe though) beautiful place – as you might guess, I’m part of those city people who get really ex-cited when a few stars show up in the sky. From the top of the mountain, which, as Jamie keeps reminding us, is a volcano (check out that basal-tic rock), the lovely countryside lays itself out under our eyes. The Ra-dom where we partied is the highest point in the whole of Hessen, and so the best place to learn how to glide.

The building we are staying in used to be military barracks, which the owner, thanks to an EU grant, con-verted into what it is now, an educa-tional youth hostel. However, rumor goes that there are still some urinals in one of the women’s bathrooms.

Wasserkuppe is not pure awesome-ness, though. Well, it could be, de-pending on how you look at it. The strong wind can be very refreshing, the capricious weather gives us an impressive lightening show, and the abundance of bug (this is harder to appreciate) shows us that there is life all around us. And of course, the sun! It has left its mark on quite a few of us. If you’re very good, you can even tell where two sunburns are layered. So enjoy all of it and don’t be mad at the flies, moths and other unnamed creature – they might be friendly and perform a little zulu dance.

WÜRZ UP?When Max Richert from AFET enters the room, his char-ismatic aura automatically sets everyone in a good mood. Especially during committee work, we are very thankful to have nice delegates like him, that’s why we think he de-serves the title ‘delegate of the day’! To all other delegates: make your chairs and your committee happy, just smile!

Friendly amendmentWith reference to our last issue, in the article about our President, we would like to alter the sentence ‘A gentleman at all times, he has been a prominent member of the EYP family for the five past years.’ to ‘A gentleman at all times, he has been a prominent member of the EYP fam-ily for the three past years.’

For Germans, there are a few in-dispensable combinations. Such as sausages and mustard, like pen and paper, beer and soccer and the classic socks with sandals. Some of our participants follow this com-fortable but questionable trend.

The official’s team asks you to always throw your rubbish in trashcans and to not leave it in the committee rooms or outside. Journalists Rebecca and Jo show us how good loooking and attrac-tive one can be while cleaning up.

THE WORlDTODAY

Style of the day

Sir Paul McCartney has been a vegetarian for many years. Together with his daughters he is backing the ‘meat-free Monday’ campaign, which encourages people to have one day without meat every week.Meat production harms the nature much more than production of vegetables and fruits. If we’re going to feed our constantly growing population, we need to eat less and cut down on the meat. The UN fears that as many as 370 million people could starve by 2050. Think twice before you or-der that big bloody delicious steak.

It is the birth place of physisist Werner Heisenberg and NBA player Dirk Nowitzki. Würzburg, initially named Vurteburch, just celebrated its 1300 year jubilee and is the home of one of the oldest universities in Germany.

A city that lies in the northern tip of Bavaria which, however, is considered franconian. So be careful¬ – don’t mix up the bavarians and franconians. About 133 000 people live in the city which is divided into 13 municipalities. It is mainly known as an administrative center, but there is a lot to see.

Since 1982 the Würzburg Residenz, where the GA will take place, is actually a World Heritage Site and a good example for the collaboration of artists from culturally important coun-tries: a synthesis of european baroque. But the city has more to offer: a great culture scene with museums, theatres and galeries, a lot of bars and clubs as well as landmarks as Fort Marienberg, the House of the Falcon or the Collegiate Church Haug. So enjoy your Saturday evening exploring the city!

Did you have fun after lunch on Wednesday? First, big thanks to Karin, who had this wonderful idea, which enabled all of you to show your wonderful creativity. And you guys surpassed all our expectations – we called it ‘mission impossible’, we never thought you would complete all the tasks in 30 minutes. A spe-cial recognition to all those French kissers out there. Here is a little se-

lection of the best two pictures per committee, and believe us, it was very very hard to pick. People got very inventive with ‘paradise’, DEVE photographing the sky, IMCO the chair Dominic while he was nap-ping in the sun, and the rest going all Biblical on us. Again, congrats!

What is in your bag?Planet W could not hide its curios-ity again and met up with Philipp Magin from Munich, one of the del-egates from the committee on cul-ture and education, to see what he had brought with him to the session.

Philipp took along a lot of clothes that he might probably not be able to wear: short pants, shirts, pullovers and even a rain coat. As a delegate he also brought a suit as well as pens and pencils to work with. He did not bring any paper, however, because he always writes at the back of research magazines. When Philipp started

unpacking he realized that he had taken two bathing suits with him as well and a lot of random things: a tie, a hungarian letter, a hole puncher, a scout badge, beanbags, vending cups, an inkwell, a calculator, note-paper from the UK, pegs, a Playmo-bil figure and a a book about magic. The delegate got a pack of cards for the train ride and for socialising, too. I’ve got so much stuff, because I keep forgetting things. That’s why I never unpack my bag – except for my dirty laundry.’ Pilipp explains. Well, and he still left something at home: This time Philipp didn´t bring tooth paste.

Remember the blockbuster movie Yes Man from the year 2008? In the movie a character played by Jim Car-rey makes a deal to answer ‘yes’ to every single offer he gets. The character finds out what a pow-erful word yes is. He discovers how just answering “yes” to life might eventually lead to some amazing hap-penings. He ends up finding the love of his life, saving a man from commit-ting suicide, and even throwing a hen party for his best friend’s fiancé. Obviously, all of us, the participants of the 20th National Session of EYP Germany, have already done the most important decision. Said yes to the chance to meet people from all over Europe. Said yes to the possibility to spend some amazing five days – hav-ing loads of fun, partying harder than ever and debating your heart out. But the first yes has only gotten us on the right track. The possibility will stay as a potential unless we actually make it all happen. To make the most

yes By Sini Ventelä

of the session we have to get even more familiar with that magic word. Those who have seen the movie know that our hero finally gets in trouble because of all the admission. The Yes Man loses his girlfriend, has problems with the police and gets into fight. As we see, there is a lesson to be learned: being absolute is never for the best. Following blindly your lead-er’s orders might sometimes lead to something unpleasant. It’s ok to say “no” when you are asked to… Hmm… Wait…Frankly, I can’t figure anything out. This is an EYP session. The no-word won’t be needed. Try even the craziest team building games. Make yourself look silly. Get into the most random conversations with people you only met hours ear-lier. Most importantly: Be spontane-ous. Just say yes to everything.

Just say
