Australia

START THE NEW YEAR with several bangs: Sydney throws possibly the best New Year's Day parties in the world. Then head on up the Gold Coast to Byron Bay, or the Whitsundays, or the Great Barrier Reef, or indeed anywhereelse along the east coast – the good times just keep rolling. Sydney is a glamorous collusion of beaches, boutiquesand bars. Melbourne is all arts, alleyways and Aussie Rules football. Brisbane is a subtropical town on the way up;Adelaide has festive grace and pubby poise. Boomtown Perth breathes West Coast optimism; Canberra transcendspolitical agendas. While the tropical northern frontier town of Darwin, and the chilly southern sandstone city of Hobart, couldn't be more different.

Thailand

Thailand reminds of Thai food, Thai Spa, busy morning market – or a night out in Bangkok. And of encounterswith history and culture, the new and the old, at just about every turn. Did I mention the white-sand beaches, jungles, ancient ruins and Buddhist temples.Indeed, the food satisfies – but on second thought, Thailand offersso much more.

South Africa

The diversity of South Africa, stretching from the hippos in the Limpopo River to the penguins waddling onthe Cape, takes some beating. There’s the deserted Kalahari, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers, iconic Table Mountain and Cape Point, Kruger National Park’s wildlife-stalked savannah (scene of the famouslion-buffalo-crocodile battle watched more than 75 million times on YouTube) and, running through the east ofthe country and into Lesotho, the Drakensberg. If you’re interested in another kind of wildlife, hit thenightclubs on Cape Town’s jumping Long St or sample African homebrew in a township shebeen (unlicensedbar)

Rajasthan

INDIA'S STATE OF PRINCES is spectacular in January. Gear up to enjoy Jaisalmer desert festival from 8th feb to 10th feb.

Venice

FEBRUARY IS CARNIVAL TIME in Venice, which makes it either the very best time to come, or the worst. What seems like a Canaletto painting comes to life every year when revellers gather for three weeks of masked debauchery. Those seeking the quiet charms of the floating city will be disappointed, but if you dare to join the huddled masses.

Sri Lanka

Endless beaches, timeless ruins, welcoming people, oodles of elephants, rolling surf, cheap prices, fun trains, famous tea and flavourful food describe Sri Lanka.Few places have as many Unesco World Heritage Sites (eight) packed into such a small area. Sri Lanka's 2000-plus years of culture can be discovered at ancient sites where legendary temples boast beautiful details.Across the island, that thing that goes bump in the night might be an elephant heading to a favourite waterhole. Safari tours of Sri Lanka’s pleasantly relaxed national parks encounter leopards, water buffaloes, all manner of birds and a passel of primates. In August are the Esala festivals in Kandy and Kataragama. The Kataragama Esala Festival is a multi-religious festival where devotes use fire walking and extreme self-penance to shows their piety to Lord Kataragama. The Kandy Esala Perahera or the Dalanda Perahera is the largest cultural parade in the world and showcases the best of Sri Lankan dancing and music and the best of the domesticated tuskers in the country.

Burma

January is the best month of all (little rain, lots of sunshine, nice kind of heat) in Burma, or Myanmar, from its pagodas and temples in the misty mountains, where the Himalayas begin, to its blissful, never-knew-existed tropical islands. Myanmar retains the power to surprise and delight even the most jaded of travellers. Be dazzled by the 'winking wonder' of Shwedagon Paya. Contemplate the 4000 sacred stupas scattered across the plains of Bagan. Stare in disbelief at the Golden Rock at Mt Kyaiktiyo, teetering impossibly on the edge of a chasm. These are all important Buddhist sights in a country where pious monks are more revered than rock stars.

Bruges

If you set out to design a fairy-tale medieval town, it would be hard to improve on central Bruges (Brugge in Dutch). Picturesque cobbled lanes and dreamy canals link photogenic market squares lined with soaring towers, historic churches and old whitewashed almshouses. And there’s plenty of it. There’s a special charmin spring when daffodils carpet the tranquil courtyard of the historic begijnhof retreat, or in winter (except Christmas) when you can have the magnificent, if icy, town almost to yourself.

Mexico

Long a favourite destination for North Americans, Mexico is also becoming increasingly popular with tourists seeking to enjoy the country's seemingly endless sunshine, stunning scenery, and beautiful sandy beaches - not to mention its astonishingly rich cultural heritage. So important are Mexico's ancient Aztec and Mayan sites and historic colonial cities that many have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Interestingly, these locations - including places like Guanajuato, Chichén Itzá, and Uxmal - are often as popular as traditional beach vacation spots like Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, and Playa del Carmen.
