Plan International’s Global Disability Inclusion Conference - Nepal, December 2016
Plan International is committed to ensuring that ‘every child
completes a quality, inclusive education that covers at least early
learning, primary and secondary education, in formal or non-
formal settings’. The central theme of the conference is Inclusive
Education, which also encompasses access to lifelong learning
opportunities such as vocational education and technical training
so that young people with disabilities have the necessary skills to
learn, lead, decide and thrive in life.
The conference will emphasize the links between inclusive
education and the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
and our organisational focus on and commitment to gender
equality, girls’ rights and inclusion.
The conference is supported by Plan International
Headquarters, Plan International Norway and Plan
International Australia. It is being organised by Plan
International Nepal and the Disability Inclusion Working
Group.
The overall objective of the conference is to further promote
disability inclusion within Plan International’s education
programmes and in our advocacy work.
The specific objectives of the conference are;
1.To increase knowledge, understanding and skills on
inclusive education in development and humanitarian
settings;
2.to inspire staff to engage in a community of practice on
disability inclusion in collaboration with partners in their
countries, and
3.to build capacity on why and how to embed the
intersection between inclusion, gender equality and
girls’ rights in programmes and advocacy work.
The main outputs of the conference are;
1) shared and documented good practices, lessons
learned and challenges in the area of inclusive
education;
2) enhanced learning on mainstream and targeted
disability programming and
3) a greater understanding of the links between Plan
International’s work with girls, boys and youth with
disabilities and the SDGs.
The conference will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from the 6th
to the 8th of December 2016. There will also be a visit to Plan
International Nepal projects outside of Kathmandu which will
take place from 9th - 11th December 2016. This will be for a
limited number of participants given distance to the project
location(s) and the costs involved. More details will be
announced.
To ensure that the conference reinforces key organisational
commitments and processes, such as the emerging Global
Strategy, BIAAG 2.0 and the SDG Influencing Plan, key cross-
cutting areas will be covered. The conference will be shaped by
the three priority focus areas outlined in Plan International’s
Tackling Exclusion Framework; (1) Inclusive Programmes; (2)
Influencing and Communications, and (3) Inclusive
Workplaces.
The conference will place particular emphasis on good
practices that support girls, boys and youth with disabilities
exercise their right to education.
The conference is aimed principally at Plan International
programme staff at both management and programme level who
are keen to learn more about disability inclusion, or have a
(potential) remit for disability, education work or gender equality.
It is relevant for gender equality staff; education staff; staff
implementing disability projects (both mainstream and targeted)
and also for local partners of Plan International. It is expected
that approximately 75% of participants will be Plan International
staff, with the remainder being external partners. Plan
International is very keen for current and future potential
partners to attend the global conference, particularly people with
disabilities, DPO partners and technical partners who can share
examples of good practice on inclusive education.
The official language of the conference is English, yet
simultaneous translation will be provided, as needed.
Those interested in attending the conference are
encouraged to cover their costs. A number of
bursaries are available for representatives of Plan
Offices and organisations that submit high quality
submission papers. Decisions on allocation of
bursaries will be made after submissions are
selected.
