NE State Fair celebrates agricultureAugust 24 - September 3

The Nebraska State Fair brought in more than 330,000 people last year, and this year will feature a Sky Tram that will run from the Exhibition building to the cattle barn.

Story by robyN SchErEr, m.agr.Staff reporter

Nebraska is a place where corn and cattle are abundant, and agriculture is a way of life. Each year, the Nebraska State Fair is a place where

people can go to learn about agriculture, and enjoy the success of the industry.

“There is no question that agriculture is important to Nebraska. It’s our number one industry, and is very important to the state economy. The sale of our products out of state and out of the country is a major contributor, and ag is a major employer. Nebraska is agriculture,” said Shaun Schleif, marketing and sponsorship director for the Nebraska State Fair.

This year, the theme of the fair is “High Flying Fun.” The fair will be held from

August 24 through September 3, at Fonner Park in Grand Island. The theme was based off of the new event for this year, which is a 40-foot high Sky Tram.

The Sky Tram will run from one side of the fairgrounds to the other, and is 1,200 feet in length, or roughly the size of four football fields. It will go over the core of the fairgrounds, and allow visitors to see the fair from a different angle.

In addition to the Sky Tram, the fair features a multitude of other events from livestock shows to concerts. “2012 will once again feature crowd favorites, like the draft pull, draft horse hitch and open 6 hitch shows, cattle stock dog trials, mutton bustin’ plus competitions in 4-H, FFA and open class exhibitors,“ said Nebraska State Fair livestock superintendent, Bill Angell.

“From traditional favorites like sheep, cattle, horses and swine, the Nebraska State Fair will also feature a collection of animals

Page 33: Plains Edition Fence Post Summer Events Guide 2012

from alpacas to goats — longhorns to poultry,” he said.

The breeding cattle shows will take place on Wednesday August 29 and Thursday August 30. Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Limousin and Gelbvieh breeders will be featured on Wednesday. Thursday is Cattleman’s Day, and the Hereford, Shorthorn, Maine Anjou, Simmental and Dexter producers will compete.

The Supreme Champion Drive will occur at 2-7 p.m. that evening, with the overall open female and bull championship selection. Friday morning, August 31, will feature the open jackpot feeder and breeding calf show.

Other notable livestock shows include the cattle dog trials on August 27 and 28, the various junior market shows held from September 1-3, and the Parade of Champion for the junior market champions at 4:30 p.m., on September 3.

“One of the great comments that we heard on the livestock side is that the exhibitors saw more people in the livestock barns in 15 minutes in Grand Island than they did in Lincoln. The exhibitors come to the fair because of the great success we have with a crowd. The more people there are, the more opportunities there are for exhibitors,” Schleif said.

Last year a record 330,000 people attended the fair. In addition to the livestock shows, attendees can also learn about new equipment and technology. “We have a lot of equipment on display from tractors to other items on the farm. It’s a place for folks to come, to gather, to talk and to look at what’s on the horizon for farmers,” he said.

Attendees can participate in hands-on learning experiences while at the fair as well. The livestock birthing pavilion will feature a large-animal birthing area, a farrowing area for pigs and a poultry hatching area. Those who attend the fair can see livestock being born under the supervision of trained professionals from the University of Nebraska Pre-Vet Medicine Program.

The fair also features a fiber glass milking cow, where participants can learn about the dairy industry and learn what it is like to milk a cow. There is also a live milking parlor on site, and attendees can watch the cows be milked.

Every evening at 6 p.m., a fair parade will also take place. The county fair parade, which will be held on the county fair day on August 25, allows the local county fair to showcase their event.

The Nebraska State Fair is celebrating its third year in Grand Island. The fair was originally held along the banks of the Missouri River. It moved between Nebraska City, Brownville, Lincoln and Omaha. Finally, in 1901, the Nebraska Legislature selected the Lancaster County Fairgrounds as the official site for the fair, and the fair would stay there for 109 years.

However, in 2010 the decision was made to move the fair to Grand Island. This was the first major event to move away from the Eastern part of the state, and the move has proved to be a good one.

“We have seen a dramatic increase in attendance the last two years,” said Schleif.

In that time frame, the fair has seen over 642,000 visitors. The third highest attendance ever was recorded at 68,000 on Labor Day of last year. The other increase the fair has seen has been in entries.

Fair attendees touch a newborn piglet. The livestock birthing area allows people to witness animals being born.

The state fair is a place for people to learn about agriculture and to have a fun filled family weekend.

For livestock entries, the fair has seen a total of 1,300 FFA entries, 2,800 4-H entries, and 4,369 open exhibitor entries. Produces from 14 states and Canada have competed.

The other competitions such as wood working, baked good and rockets have also seen an increase with 10,206 4-H entries, 1,744 FFA entries and 6,644 open entries.

The fair is a 501-C5 operation, which classifies it as an agricultural non-profit organization. There are no tax dollars that are used to support the fair. Instead, the fair is supported through sponsors, exhibition and vendor fees, admissions and through the Nebraska lottery.

In 2004, it was approved by Nebraska voters to earmark 10 percent of the annual net proceeds from the Nebraska lottery to

the enhancement of the Nebraska State Fair. “These funds are used for operational needs as well as capital improvements to the buildings,” according to Joseph McDermott, Executive Director of the fair.

Every year, CaseIH gives free combine rides to anyone who wants to know what it feels like. The Nebraska State Fair received a first place away of excellence from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions for this program.

“CaseIH provides free combine rides at out fair and over the past two years alone, has given in excess of 8,000 free rides to folks from all over Nebraska who normally would not have a chance to do so,” said Schleif.

The fair offers a variety of other events as well, including Bengal tigers, a sea lion show, concerts and a carnival. To learn more about the Nebraska State Fair, please visit www.StateFair.org.
