Places to Visit in VietnamBecause of the war in the late 1960s and early 1970s, much of what people know about Vietnam is its recent, violent past. However, Vietnam was an important kingdom, trading

post and religious site for more than 1,000 years. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Vietnam began easing restrictions on tourism, and millions of visitors are now enjoying thewealth of historic and natural attractions the country has to offer.

Hoi AnThe old part of Hoi An is one of the best-preserved fishing and trading villages in Southeast Asia, dating to the 15th century. It is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a

large portion of the historic buildings in the town have been historically protected and restored, including pagodas and temples. Because of its trading port status, the town

attracted large numbers of immigrants from all over the world, and this heritage is reflected in the architecture and artifacts.

    Ha Long Bay

Just off the northernmost part of Vietnam's coast is Ha Long Bay. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features more than 1,500 limestone islands. The islands are nearly alllimestone formations in the shape of needles, and a majority of them are uninhabited and have never been explored by humans. Many of the islands have extensive cave

networks, some of which are accessible by boat. Cruises in traditional Vietnamese dragon boats are available daily.

Hue MonumentsHue was the former capital of Vietnam, and the seat of power for the rulers of the Nguyen dynasty from the early 19th century until 1945. The imperial city has a huge number of

historic monuments including ruined palaces, tombs, temples and fortresses, all of which were built in traditional Vietnamese styles. In addition to the i mperial ruins, numerous

ancient Buddhist temples and shrines surround the city and many are open to tourists. Hue was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.

War Remnants MuseumThe War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, originally was named the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes. Since Vietnam has been

normalizing relations with the United States, the name was changed to reflect the two countries' new relationship. The museum houses exhibits and artifacts on the effect of the

Vietnam War on civilians and the tactics used during the conflict. War machines, including American tanks, planes and artillery, are on display. According to the "Lonely Planet"guide, this museum is one of the most popular sites for Western tourists.
