Saint Margaret’s Church stands between Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

The Making

St Margaret’s was built in the latter part of the 11th century,. From then until the dissolution of the monastery by Henry VIII in 1540

Robert Stowell had to rebuild the church in 1482. The work continued over many years and the church was sanctified on 9 April 1523. Although updated in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the structure is still remained in a state.

Pope Clement III gave an order made Saint Margaret's Church free from the authority of the Bishop of London.

Saint Margaret's was built when monks were being disturbed by people coming to celebrate mass so they decided to build a smaller church next to Westminster where this could take place without the monks being disturbed.

The church was dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch who is not known by many people although the cult she was part of was very famous in the middle ages.

Westminster cathedral was built in memory of Cardinal Wiseman (who died in 1865, and was the first Archbishop of Westminster from 1850)

They started building it in 1895 by the architect Cardinal Manning and the cathedral opened in 1903. Un fortunately under the laws of the Church no place of worship can be consecrated unless free from all of it’s debt and has its fabric completed, so the consecration ceremony did not take place until June 28, 1910. In 1995 the queen visited the cathedral.

The MakingThe current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built during the years of 1675 and 1710. The building before the present structure was destroyed in the Great fire of London.

The first service took place here in 1697.

The First Cathedral named Saint Paul first was built in 604 AD

•the 80th and 100th birthdays of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer and,

•most recently, the thanksgiving services for both the Golden Jubilee and 80th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen.
