LAKE LAND COLLEGE PLACEMENT TESTING POLICY

Students will be mandatorily placed into appropriate courses as determined by scores on the Lake Land College placement test/ACT test and program requirements.

Students may retest once in each skill area--limit of two sets of Lake Land College test scores within a four-year period.

Initial placement test is free; minimal retest fee.

Students with special needs can make special arrangements for placement testing by contacting the Coordinator of Student Accommodations at (217) 234-5259.

COMPASS is a group of exams created by the American College Test (ACT) Program. These online tests are designed to evaluate each individual’s reading, writing (English), and math skills, and to determine which courses a student should be placed in based on his/her level of ability. Each question is multiple-choice; the number of questions will vary depending upon your skill level. How well you do may be affected by how well you follow instructions. A tutorial will show you how to take the test and how to use the mouse. You may repeat the tutorial if you choose. Be sure you understand test instructions before beginning. Take your time and work at your own speed. There is no time limit. Your score report will state how long it took to complete the test, but this will not affect your scores. Scores are determined by the accuracy of your responses. It is to your advantage to take your time. * Placement in courses is based upon test scores. * Placement test scores are part of the selection criteria for special admissions programs.

Skill areas include reading, writing (English), and math: The reading placement includes passages and questions related to those passages. The writing skills test requires students to correct errors in basic grammar, usage,

punctuation, and style. The mathematics test covers four areas: pre-algebra, algebra, college-level algebra, and

trigonometry. Math exam scores are based on the number of correct answers at each level.

Reading You will have from one to five passages to read and will answer questions about those passages. The objective is to see how well you understand what you have read. The reading comprehension questions are of two general types:

Referring--Referring items pose questions about material explicitly stated in a passage.

Reasoning--Reasoning items assess proficiency at making appropriate inferences, developing a critical understanding of the text, and determining the specific meanings of difficult, unfamiliar, or ambiguous words based on context.

Sample Passage #1 What Methods Do Andean Farmers Use?

Public debate around climate change and its effects on agriculture tends to focus on the large-scale industrial farms of the North. Farmers who work on a small scale and use traditional methods have largely been ignored. However, as the world slowly comes to terms with the threat of climate change, Native farming traditions will warrant greater attention.

In the industrial model of agriculture, one or two crop varieties are grown over vast areas. Instead of trying to use local resources of soil and water optimally and sustainably, the natural environment is all but ignored and uniform growing conditions are fabricated through large-scale irrigation and the intensive use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. For example, a handful of basically similar potato varieties, all of which require nearly identical soil conditions, temperature, rainfall, and growing seasons, account for almost all global production. When these global crops are no longer suited to the environment in which they are grown, when their resistance to disease and pests begins to fail, or the climate itself changes, the best way to rejuvenate the breeding stock will be to introduce new genetic material from the vast diversity of crop varieties still maintained by indigenous peoples.

In contrast to the industrial model, Andean potatoes and other Andean crops such as squash and beans grown by Quechuan farmers exhibit extraordinary genetic diversity, driven by the need to adapt crops to the extraordinary climatic diversity of the region. Along the two axes of latitude and altitude, the Andes encompasses fully two-thirds of all possible combinations of climate and geography found on Earth. The Andean potato has been adapted to every environment except the depth of the rainforest or the frozen peaks of the mountains. Today, facing the likelihood of major disruptions to the climatic conditions for agriculture worldwide, indigenous farmers provide a dramatic example of crop adaptation in an increasingly extreme environment. More importantly, Native farmers have also safeguarded the crop diversity essential for the future adaptations. 1. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Attention to Native farming practices will lead to greater awareness of the threat of

climate change. B. Popularity of small-scale farming in the North will lead to greater attention to Native

farming practices. C. Global demand for food will lead to increasing efficiency of large-scale farming in the

North. D. It will be worthwhile to include a greater focus on Native farming practices in public

discussions concerning the threat of climate change. E. Despite potential climate change, public debate will have little effect on industrial

farming practices.

2. In the second paragraph, the information about potato-growing practices in the industrial model of agriculture serves to:

A. give an example of a potential problem that Native farming practices could help to

alleviate. B. show the likely global consequences of a possible food shortage caused by industrial

farming practices. C. show how pests and disease are less effectively resisted by crops grown in the

industrial farming model. D. give an example of how public debate has had little effect on the agricultural

practices of the North. E. give an example of how Native farming practices and industrial farming practices

derive from different climatic conditions.

3. The passage states that which of the following is true of the small number of potato varieties that account for most of the potatoes produced on Earth currently?

A. They are grown in the Andean region. B. They all require very similar soil and climate conditions. C. They are no longer suited to their environment. D. They are based on genetic material from crops developed by indigenous peoples. E. They make optimal use of available soil and water resources.

4. As it is used in the passage, the underlined word fabricated most nearly means:

A. woven B. falsely stated C. fully clothed

D. manufactured E. unwrapped

Writing Skills (English) The writing test presents one or more passages, each containing several errors in punctuation, grammar, and style. Students should evaluate each section of a passage. When an error is detected in a passage, clicking on that section brings up several alternative choices of text from which a more appropriate choice can be selected and inserted automatically into the text. Read the entire essay carefully when looking for errors. If you leave an error uncorrected, it will count as a wrong answer. Reread the corrected passage before moving on. In the sample passage that follows, each section is numbered. In the computerized COMPASS Writing Skills Test, sections are not numbered; instead, students must move the cursor to each section of text in which an error is identified and then click the left mouse button to make the alternative text options appear.

Sample Passage #1 Grameen Bank

1Bangladesh’s economy is based primarily on small-scale 2enterprises ran by self-employed men and women. 3These small-business owners, who make a living as shopkeepers or providers of services, 4face a problem common to proprietors everywhere: lack of access to credit, 5particularly among the early start-up phase of an enterprise. 6Credit, which allows people to obtain the resources and equipment he needs

to make his business productive, 7is often, frequently unavailable to those who possess

little collateral. 8Thus, many 9people which would benefit from credit 10are denied access to it.

11The Grameen Bank, founded in 1976 by economist Muhammad Yunis, who was a fine soccer player in his youth, provides 12 the only unique alternative 13via loans to prospective business owners, whether they are given only to those who fall below a certain level of assets. 14Instead of putting up collateral, Grameen customers are accountable with one another, 15congregating in 16small groups that meet as a week. 17If one member will fail to repay a loan, the entire group is unable to obtain credit 18in the future thus, group members have a strong incentive to succeed and support 19others in the group. In the last twenty years, the Grameen Bank has lent two billion dollars, 20and his customers have repaid 97 percent of their loans. 21Such results have led to the creation of similar programs.

eWrite Students whose scores fall within a predetermined range will respond to a writing prompt. This provides an opportunity for students with a borderline writing score to place into college level coursework. Decide how you want to respond to the prompt. Testing center staff will provide paper if you would like to organize your thoughts. The number of words and paragraphs in your essay is less important than organization, clarity, and development of your ideas. Before submitting your essay, correct any mistakes in grammar, usage, punctuation, and spelling. Within the hour available, make your essay clear, focused, and polished.

Mathematics Trigonometry The mathematics tests are organized around four levels: pre-algebra, algebra, college algebra, and trigonometry. Students begin with algebra, and the difficulty level of following questions is based upon answers to previous questions. The number of questions will vary depending upon your skill level. Within each level, test questions include:

basic skills items—solve by performing a sequence of basic operations

application items—apply sequences of basic operations to novel settings or in complex ways

analysis items—demonstrate a conceptual understanding of principles and relationships relevant to particular mathematical operations

Students are permitted (encouraged) to use ACT approved calculators. Calculators will not be provided and may not be shared. Calculator guidelines are updated periodically and may be found at: http://www.actstudent.org/faq/answers/calculator.html. A standard calculator is available on the test screen. Proctors will check to be sure all calculators meet with ACT guidelines.

The math test begins at the algebra level. All students should focus on the algebra/pre-algebra levels to prepare for testing. Proficient algebra test scores are required to advance to the college algebra and trigonometry levels.

Initial test is free; minimal retest fee.

Students with special needs can make special arrangements for placement testing by contacting the Coordinator of Student Accommodations at (217) 234-5259.

Tips for Taking COMPASS® Tests 1. Relax! The COMPASS tests are designed to help you succeed in school. Your scores help

determine which courses are most appropriate for your current level of knowledge and skills. Once you identify your academic strengths and weaknesses, you can get the help you need to improve underdeveloped skills.

2. You will be able to concentrate better on the test if you get plenty of rest and eat properly before the test. You should also arrive a few minutes early so you can find the testing area, restrooms, etc., and have time to gather your thoughts before the test begins.

3. Be sure you understand directions before beginning each test.

4. Read each question carefully until you understand what the question is asking. If answering an item requires several steps, be sure you consider them all.

5. Be sure to answer every item. You are not penalized for guessing. Your score will provide more useful placement information if you answer every item, even if you guess.

6. Don't be afraid to change an answer if you believe that your first choice was wrong.

7. If you have a problem or question during the test, raise your hand, and the test proctor will help you. Although they cannot answer test questions for you, they can help you with other problems.
