Steps to Solving Place Value Problems Word Form to Standard Form:
Steps: 1. Put a box around the word thousand. 2. Write the number before the word
thousand. 3. Write a comma to show the word thousand. 4. Write the number after the word thousand.
Example: three hundred two thousand, two hundred twelve
302,212 Standard to Word:
Steps: 1. Highlight the comma. 2. Read the number up to the comma in your
head. Then write it. 3. When you reach your highlighted comma,
write the word thousand. 4. Read the number after the comma in your
head. Then write it.
Example:
456,834
Four hundred fifty-six thousand, eight hundred thirty four
Expanded to Standard: Steps:
1. Take the first number and write it. 2. Look at the second number. Line up the
ones place and record the number. (For example, 4,000 would be written in starting with the ones place and writing the 4 last in the thousands place)
3. Continue until you finish recording all the numbers to make an addition problem.
4. Then add down the columns. If you have more than two digits that are bigger than 0 in a column you made a mistake.
Example:
300,000 + 4,000 + 200 + 50 + 6=
300,000
4,000 200
50 6
304,256
Standard to Expanded: Steps:
1. Take the first digit of the number and write it.
2. Count how many digits come after that. Make them zeros and write them after your number.
3. Write a plus sign. 4. Write the second digit in the number. 5. Count how many digits are to the right of
the number. Make them zeros and write them after your number.
6. Continue doing this until you are down to the ones place. Write that digit by itself.
Example:
130,093
100,000 + 30,000 + 0 + 0 + 90 + 3
+
