Around this time of the year, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. The swelter-ing summer heat is slowly becoming an item of the

past, the awesome summer vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds, and our kids have settled back into their school and sports routines. Now that the Halloween sugar rush has worn off, we are already in full preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Wow! Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye the entire year seems to have gone by. Another fantastic year of enjoying time with family, friends and neighbors, of being there for each other through good times and bad, and of enjoying each other’s companionship.

As we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a delicious turkey feast, let's give thanks for all the little blessings we have received through-out the year, let’s be generous to those who need our help, and let’s continue to enjoy each other.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

The Goodman Jfs of Broward County Leadership Board hosted a food drive that attracted a large crowd and accumulated a wonderful supply of non-perishable food items as well as supermarket gift

cards to help families that are dependent upon JFS to eat on a month to month basis. The food drive was held at the Posnack JCC in Davie.

In the process, the board introduced JFS to many new families and mem-bers of the community.

“It was a terrific and inspiring event,” said Michael Internoscia, one of the founding members of the Goodman JFS Leadership Board. “We are so grateful for the many families that came out to support the event, provide much needed food, and to learn more about the important ways that JFS helps the community every day.”

The tally from the day was impressive – the donations filled 100 bags. In addition, more than $1000 in cash donations, and another $1000 in Publix Gift Cards were generously brought in. The drive was fun and meaningful, with pizza and activities for kids and adults, including decorating brown bags, an art contest, writing notes to the recipients and filling brown bags with collected food items.

The red Carpet was roLLed out for the pLantation poLiCe department, fire department and sponsors by the Greater Federation of Woman’s Clubs Plantation Chapter at their September “Welcome Back”

luncheon at Deicke Auditorium. Gloria Merritt and Barbara Graveson, co-chairs of the luncheon, said this event is something the club does every other year to rec-ognize those in the community who are so important. This first event of the club’s winter season drew more than 100 people.

The Plantation Woman’s Club (PWC) has fostered friendship between women and has supported educational goals and community improvements since 1949. Last year the club donated $18,000 to the Fire Department to update their media room and this year they gave $18,000 to the police department to buy mobile light signs that broadcast everything from traffic alerts to special events. “The police and fire department both have wish lists of things that include items the city just can’t afford,” said Merritt. “We’re happy to try and fulfill some of these wishes every year.”

In the past, the PWC has bestowed upon the fire department a big steel door called “Big Blue” which the department uses in training firefighters how to break into buildings in the event of a fire. The police department really loves the “Cuff Man”, the PWC bought for them. “Cuff Man” is a training mannequin, complete with an audio visual sound system that simulates a criminal who needs to be cuffed.

Also recognized at the luncheon were sponsors who are always there to support the clubs efforts. Sponsors of note include Bench Ads of Plantation, T.M. Ralph Funeral Home, Linardi’s Jewelers, Prescription Pad Pharmacy and Waste Management.

Upcoming events for the club include an Antique Show in February at Deicke Auditorium, a Garden Fest in March and a Fashion Show. For more information on GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club call (954)661-3830.

On deCemBer 8th, fans of Elena Maria Garcia will be

treated yet again to her comedic genius when she hits the stage with nine other funny women in a staged reading by Thinking Cap Theatre Company of RADIO T.B.S. (Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals) at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale. A hilarious holiday play set in a fictional Central Florida trailer park, RADIO T.B.S. highlights the on-and off-stage drama of a group of Southern belles as they prepare for their annual

nativity play. Garcia, who will share the stage with Sally Bondi, Niki Fridh, Sabrina Gore and Casey Dressler, among others, said the play is one of her favorites as she fell in love with the characters and the humor the moment she read it.

“I love the fact that this is an all-female cast of which all the women have no choice but to be bold, scary, ugly and super funny,” said Garcia. “As an improvist, we (females) learn to approach our challenges on stage not by being pretty, but by being fierce and fearless. RADIO T.B.S. is all about being fearless with the charac-ters in order to get the comedy in the script.”

Garcia said she is thankful to Nicole Stoddard, artistic director of Thinking Cap Theater, for choosing the play and credits Stoddard for being brave and bold

in her direction with Thinking Cap Theater Company, one of the freshest and most nonconventional theatre companies in South Florida.

“To know there is a community support system like ArtServe for upcoming artists, as well as for those groups trying to communicate with our community is a wonderful and calming feeling,” said Garcia. ArtServe has assisted numerous arts groups and projects which would never have seen the light of day if it weren’t for its support,” Garcia said

Garcia, a long time Plantation resident, is the co-founder of Underdog Productions. She is also the co-founder and Director of Education for Bluedog School of Acting for Kids. She has appeared in numerous commercials and television shows and is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor and Ensemble. She was last seen at the Fillmore Stage in Miami Beach in her self-written, directed and produced one-person show, Do You Speak Mexican?, Parade Production’s The Whole Caboodle, Zoetic Stage’s Moscow, and South Beach Babylon at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

She is the founding member of Separate Checks Improv Troupe, Quien Sigue A Quien, (the first Spanish Speaking Improv Troupe in the United States) and the first all-female improv troupe on the east Coast, Big Purse and Matching Shoes.

Garcia, who holds a Bachelor of Theatre from the University of Florida and a Masters in Acting/ Directing from Florida Atlantic University, has taught improvisa-tion and acting for over twenty-five years. She currently teaches at Bluedog School of Acting for Kids and New World School of the Arts and is a member of Screen Actor’s Guild and Actors’ Equity.

RADIO T.B.S. is part of a trio of plays which make up Thinking Cap Theatre’s 2014 Play Reading Series called “Fall in Love with Theatre”. The first play, Freakshow, premiered in October. Tickets are still avail-able for In The Blood on November 10th and RADIO T.B.S. on December 8th. For more information call 813-220-1546 or visit www.thinkingcaptheatre.com.

Anyone who passed By ameriCan heritaGe hiGh sChooL on September 24th, might have thought all the hoopla going on in front of the school was a normal fall pep rally in support of the football team. Although

it is true the students were supporting a hero, it wasn’t a football player who was receiving all the attention. It was Kevin Schatz, a young man who battled pediatric cancer and survived. Schatz, who will graduate at the end of the school year, has big plans for his future and is grateful for all the support he has received from his friends, fellow classmates, teachers and his family, particularly his grandfather Sam Rosen.

The pep rally celebration at the school, was a send-off of sorts for Schatz and his grandfather who traveled to New York City and appeared as guests on The Today show, the day after the rally. Kevin, his brother and grandfather joined hundreds of students from schools throughout the New York City area to show their support for pediatric cancer on Go4theGoal’s National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day. Go4theGoal is an organization that helps children affected by cancer achieve their goals. One of their programs is a Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer

initiative which is centered around selling Gold shoes laces to raise funds and awareness of this devastating disease.

Students and staff at American Heritage stepped up to the plate and purchased 900 of them, which they all proudly wore in support of Schatz at the pep rally. Dr. Carlos Pulido, Adviser for the Pre-Med Society at American Heritage, said $6,000 was made from the sale of the laces and all of it will go towards helping local families who have kids with cancer.

Fueled by the sale of the shoelaces and the tremendous turnout at the pep rally, Schatz was excited to represent the cause on national television. He got to meet Al Roeker as well as the producers and hosts of the show on a cold, rainy morning in Manhattan. The cold and rain didn’t dampen Kevin’s spirit though as he said he is grateful, especially now, for every new experience and every new day.

“I couldn’t have gotten through this past year without the tremendous support of my grandfather and of my friends.,” Schatz said. Now I just want to support other kids with cancer and to let everyone know how important it is to appreciate each day because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

R isa steinman is a mom on a mis-sion to raise money and awareness for cyclic vomiting syndrome, a rare medi-

cal condition that her nine-year old daughter Ella was diagnosed with five years ago. Every 12 weeks, almost like clockwork since Ella was 21 months old, she gets extremely dizzy, vomits profusely, becomes lethargic and has to be admitted to the hospital. She also suffers from migraines.

“We went to every pediatric specialist when she was a baby to try and find out what was wrong with her,” said Steinman. “Ella went through every test imaginable but no one could tell us what was going on. Then, when she was 4 years old, I found a doctor in Cleveland, Ohio who specializes in Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and she was finally diagnosed.”

Nothing the doctor did, however helped Ella. Since then, the family has seen specialists in Los Angeles and Milwaukee. Again, no protocols have helped Ella. Due to her condition, Ella missed over 20 days of school last year and Steinman was always taking time off of work. She started a chat room for other parents of children with CVS and said it helped to be able to share their concerns with others who were going through the same thing as they were. “A lot of people have a hard time understanding because when Ella is not having an episode she is a normal, healthy child,” Steinman said.

A little over a year ago, the family had to downsize their house and Steinman began looking for ways to supplement their income. She began selling clothes that she no longer wears on eBay and asked her family members if they wanted her to do it for them as well.

“I was thrilled when my sister in laws Valentino shoes and Prada handbag sold and my sister in law told me to keep half the money,” Steinman said. “The idea

spread and now I consign for 90 people and sell on various websites. I also go to high-end boutiques in Broward and Dade counties and get their unsold brand new clothes and sell them to other boutiques. A portion of the profits I earn go to www.cvsonline.org.”

On November 1st, Steinman and her partner Tracy Bonechea, launched their new website Chic-Closets.com. The site allows people to sell their own items as well as shop for things that they might want or need. At checkout customers choose how much, if any-thing, they want to donate to cvsonline.org or choose from a list of other charities. A section of the site has celebrity items for sale as well. All of the proceeds from the celebrity items are donated to CVS research.

“It’s an excellent venue for women to sell the things they no longer wear, make some extra

money and contribute to the needs of those who suffer with CVS,” Steinman said. The Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association (CVSA) serves the needs of cyclic

vomiting syndrome (CVS) sufferers, their families and professional care givers by raising awareness and providing education and support to those affected by cyclic vomiting, abdominal migraine and related disorders while advocating for and funding research. Established in 1993, CVSA has grown from a hand-ful of interested parents and professionals, into a network that includes over 40 medical advisors and volunteers serving in the U.S. and Canada, as well as over 30 other countries worldwide. The association’s primary focus is working toward a cure, through the support of several promising research initiatives, and supporting its members by strengthening communications and offering a wide range of resources for education and support. As it does every year, the kiwanis Club of Plantation gave a brand new dictionary to every student in 3rd grade in

Plantation and this year, a student at Plantation Park Elementary, received the ten thousandth one. Third grader Jade Bishop, who loves reading adven-ture books, proudly accepted her dictionary from club treasurer Jim McGonigle and shook hands with Mary Belle, whose father John Pfau, started The Dictionary Project many years ago. Pfau, one of the original members of the Plantation Kiwanis Club, was an active participant for 58 years until he passed away at the age of 94.

“I’m so happy to be here to see this today because it means the spirit of my father’s love and service to the community continues,” said Belle.

“Dad felt strongly that every child should learn how to read and this project meant so much to him.”

McGonigle said the kids used to call Belle’s father Pappa John as the senior Kiwanis Club mem-ber rode his scooter twice a week to local schools in order to read to the kids. “Pfau was one in a million,” McGonigle said.

Principal Julie Gittelman said Plantation Park

Elementary is thankful to the Kiwanis Club for so many things. “In addition to the Dictionary Project, the Kiwanis Club helped plant a lovely garden for the school and they run a very popular and successful club for the kids called the K Club,” Gittelman said. “We are very honored that they selected our school to give out the ten thousandth dictionary.”

School Board member Laurie Rich Levinson, who had the honor of distributing some of the free dictionaries, said it was such a thrill to see the faces of the kids as they accepted the dictionaries. “It’s so important to have partners like Kiwanis who do so much for the schools at all levels. “ Levinson said.

In addition to the K Club in elementary school, Kiwanis Club is involved in a Builders Club in the Middle Schools and Key Club in the high schools. Kiwanis is a service organization made up of men and women throughout the world whose main pur-pose is that of helping children in their respective communities. The Kiwanis Club of Plantation was established in 1955.

As you Look outside enJoyinG your morninG coffee, are you envisioning a new pool… maybe a hot tub? Well, good news, your home may be able to provide

it to you!! Broward County home values have gone up 14.0% over the

past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 3.4% within the next year. What does that mean to homeowners? Should you sell or fix-up your current home? Many homeowners have elected to

use their home equity to upgrade their current home. If you are in the market for a new kitchen, pool or even a debt consolidation loan, ask your local credit union about their affordable home equity loans.

What is a Home Equity Loan?A home equity loan is a second mortgage that is secured by the equity in your

home. The lender determines the equity based on the market value of your home minus what you owe.

There are two types of home equity loans-which one is best for you?

1. Fixed Rate Home Equity LoanThis loan provides a single-lump-sum payment to the borrower, which is repaid over a set period of time at an agreed-upon interest rate. It’s important to know that the payment and interest rate remain the same over the life of the loan. A fixed rate equity loan protects the borrower from interest rate increases and payment fluctuations throughout the life of the loan.

2. Home Equity Line of CreditThis loan is a line of credit also known as a HELOC. The interest rate is variable and works like a credit card. The borrower is pre-approved for a certain spending limit and can withdraw money when they need it by simply writing a check. This line of credit is repaid based on the amount used and the current interest rate. The rate is based on an index, such as the Prime Rate, plus a margin and will vary with the index.

What are the benefits? ▸ Home equity loans typically have lower interest rate than credit cards ▸ Fixed monthly payments with a home equity loan ▸ Interest cost on home equity loans may be tax deductible ▸ Borrowers may qualify for large loan amounts (based on built-up equity) ▸ Funds can be used for any purpose (college tuition, debt consolidation,

home remodeling, etc)

Any downside? ▸ Rate is usually higher than the first mortgage ▸ Adjustable monthly payments with a HELOC ▸ Risk of losing your home if loan is defaulted on ▸ Downturn of the housing market could put you owing more than the value ▸ Equity loans are not for everyone...but they could be perfect for you!

Compare the different types of home equity loans and lenders; borrow only what you need and make sure the monthly payment is easily within your budget. Also, ask your neighborhood credit unions about current promotions such as “No Closing Costs”.

AcL reconstructive surgery

There are many views reGardinG indiCations for ACL Reconstructive Surgery such as age, activity/demand level and degree of instability. Most individuals, especially

moderate to high demand athletes, regardless of age, who have a complete tear of their anterior cruciate ligament, as well as clinical and functional evidence of instability, are candidates for ACL Reconstructive Surgery.

When considering the pediatric or adolescent population, there has been extensive debate in the literature over the last ten

years. Initially, treatment was consistent with bracing, rehabilitation and activity modifications (cessation of sports); however, due to the noncompliance of this patient population and their persistent knee instability with daily activities, these patients will often have further injury to the chondral and/or meniscal surfaces, resulting in degeneration and functional impairment. Non-surgical treatment in this patient population is not advised.

When considering ACL Reconstructive Surgery in pediatric and adolescent patients, age and amount of growth remaining becomes vital, as this may tailor the technique used to reconstruct the child’s knee. The major consideration is the potential risk of injury to the growth plate/physis resulting in growth disturbance before skeletal maturity.

One surgical option is a physeal (growth plate) spar-ing procedure, which is an all-soft tissue technique consid-ered in the younger athletes because of their amount of growth remaining. This pro-cedure is often non-anatomic but does improve functional stability and completely avoids the growth plates.

Another physeal sparing technique in this age group describes the use of drilling superficial bone tunnels within the epiphysis. With the use of fluoroscopic guid-ance during arthroscopy, this technique secures the graft in a relative anatomic position, but still avoids the growth plates.

In a slightly older child, since most of the growth comes from the femur, one may consider a partial transphyseal approach. In this procedure, the graft is brought through a transtibial (physeal) tunnel and is fixed to the femur in a near anatomic position avoiding the physis. A surgeon will often use an all-soft-tissue graft and fix the graft away from the femoral and tibial growth plates, thus, avoid-ing growth disturbances.

Transphyseal anatomic ACL Reconstructions is considered in adolescents and adults, as well as those children who have minimal growth left. This allows for anatomic graft placement by creating tunnels at the native origin and inser-tion sites of the original ACL. With this arthroscopic technique the surgeon drills through the growth plates and depending upon the age of the patient, one may consider soft tissue (hamstring) graft or bone patella tendon bone graft to recon-struct the ACL. The type of tissue used and fixation technique will depend upon the patient’s skeletal maturity and growth remaining.

My gold standard for skeletally mature teenage athletes and young adults is bone patella tendon bone autograft with intraphyseal fixation. When there is a contraindication to using intraosseous fixation I will use hamstring autograft and fix the graft away from the growth plates. These two techniques provide excellent stability with no growth disturbance. I would advise against the use of cadaveric (allograft) tissue in this younger population as there is a higher incidence of graft failure with return to high demand sports.

There are few indications where non-surgical treatment is advised. First is in the low demand sedentary individual who doesn’t describe functional instabil-ity in their day-to-day activities. Next is the young athlete who sustains a partial injury to the ACL but still presents with good clinical stability. In these patients I closely monitor and follow their progress and often advise for the use of a custom de-rotational brace when returning to their sport. The last patient is that patient who is unable, for medical reasons, to pursue surgery because of the potential inherent risks of anesthesia. For these patients I will often advise a physical therapy program, bracing and activity modifications.
