The ABCs of E-Reading New Devices Are Changing Habits. People Are Reading More, Even While in a Kayak

People who buy e-readers tend to spend more time than ever with their nose in a book, preliminary research shows.

A study of 1,200 e-reader owners by Marketing and Research Resources Inc. found that 40% said they now read more than they did with print books. Of those surveyed, 58% said they read about the same as before while 2% said they read less than before. And 55% of the respondents in the May study, paid for by e-readermaker Sony Corp., thought they'd use the device to read even more books in the future. The study looked at owners of three devices: Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle, Apple Inc.'s iPad and the Sony Reader. While e-readers are still a niche product just beginning to spread beyond early adopters, these new reading experiences are a big departure from the direction U.S. reading habits have been heading. A 2007 study by the National Endowment for the Arts caused a furor when it reported Americans are spending less time reading books. About half of all Americans ages 18 to 24 read no books for pleasure, it found.

Some 11 million Americans are expected to own at least one digital reading gadget by the end of September, estimates Forrester Research. U.S. e-book sales grew 183% in the first half of this year compared with the year-earlier period, according to the Association of American Publishers.

Google TV to Roll Out World-Wide Next Year

Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said the Internet giant plans to launch its Google TV platform globally next year, in the company's latest move to expand its reach outside its core U.S. market.

Google used Mr. Schmidt's closing keynote speech at the IFA technology trade fair in Berlin to present Google TV, which projects a search bar onto the top of the television screen and allows users to search and surf the Internet, as well as live TV listings. The service is scheduled to make its debut in the U.S. this fall.

Google says it is currently working with content providers to bring entertainment options to Google TV. The company added that it plans to launch support for applications on the service next year.

Soon users will be able to change the channel using their voice through Google speech-recognition technology, Brittany Bohnet, a Google product marketing manager, said at the trade fair.

"The Internet is creating a great Internet disruption and that disruption is changing so many things," Mr. Schmidt said during his speech

KFC To Introduce Colonel To The Younger Generation USA Today

As a green copy editor, I recall writing a headline for the obituary we ran when Colonel Harland Sanders died in 1980, something to do with "hasn't a leg (or a wing) to stand on," which was swiftly rejected by the copy chief. What can I say. In any case, that was 30 years ago and the Colonel was 90 when he died so he'd be 120 years old today.

Which brings us to Bruce Horovitz' story about KFC, the company founded by Sanders, and its effort to revive the prestige of the good Colonel. "More than six in 10 Americans ages 18 to 25 -- the chain's key demo -- couldn't identify him in the KFC logo, according to a survey by the chain. Worse, five in 10 believe he's a made-up icon and three in 10 haven't a clue who he was."

Today, the chain begins an online public relations blitz to acquaint the younger generation with the goateed, white-suited gentleman. KFC will use Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, its website and other digital outreach to introduce Sanders and prod youngsters to create and upload a piece of art that could become a painting to hang (temporarily) next to the famous Norman Rockwell painting of Sanders at the company's headquarters in Louisville, Ky.

YouTube Ads Turn Videos Into Revenue

Last month, a YouTube user, TomR35, uploaded a clip from the AMC series "Mad Men" in which Don Draper makes a heartfelt speech about the importance of nostalgia in advertising.

Viewers wouldn't notice, but that clip also makes an important point about modern advertising - YouTube is an increasingly fruitful place for advertisers.

In the past, Lions Gate, which owns the rights to the "Mad Men" clip, might have requested that TomR35's version be taken down. But it has decided to leave clips like this up, and in return, YouTube runs ads with the video and splits the revenue with Lions Gate.

Remarkably, more than one-third of the two billion views of YouTube videos with ads each week are like TomR35's "Mad Men" clip - uploaded without the copyright owner's permission but left up by the owner's choice. They are automatically recognized by YouTube, using a system called Content ID that scans videos and compares them to material provided by copyright owners.

Those two billion views, a 50 percent increase over last year, according to the company, are just 14 percent of the videos viewed each week on the Google-owned site. But that's enough to turn YouTube profitable this year, analysts say.

Samsung Unveils Tablet to Compete With iPad Galaxy Tab Has Smaller Screen, Similar Features to Apple's Device; Likely Cost Is $200-$300 Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday unveiled the Galaxy Tab, its take on Apple Inc.'s iPad, as more technology companies trickle into the nascent tablet market.

Tablets represent a potential new source of revenue for Samsung, which is making up for lost ground in the intensely competitive smartphone business.

Rather than sell it directly to consumers, Samsung will rely on its carrier partners to sell the Galaxy Tab, which runs on Google Inc.'s Android software, comes with a cellular connection, and features a seven-inch screen. The tablet will debut in Italy, moving to other markets as Samsung locks in more carrier deals.

Vodafone Group PLC, the world's biggest mobile operator, said it would start selling the Galaxy Tab in most of its European markets and a number of its other markets worldwide in October.

It is expected to launch in the U.S. over the next few months, but the company would only say it was in talks with multiple carriers. The Galaxy Tab is essentially an enlarged version of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S smartphone, which was originally available through AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile, and more recently Sprint Nextel Corp
