Reports Semester 1 reports for the junior school will be published to the student/parent portal this week. Conversations could include celebrating success and considering ways of continuing to grow as a learner. Year 8 into 9 Subject Selection Evening Last night we had a very successful Year 8 into 9 subject selection evening where students and parents were given an outline of the process of choosing three electives for Stage 5. Head Teachers presented information about the twenty eight subjects that are available for student expression of interest. A reminder to Year 8 students that they need to enter their Expression of Interests into WebChoice by Thursday 29 June at 5pm. Andrew Fairley gave an extensive presentation on cyber safety which will be emailed to Year 8 parents later today. Year 12 Trial HSC examinations Year 12 Trial HSC examinations continue in the hall this week and we have very positive feedback from the examination supervisors. They have commented on how well prepared the students are and how focused they are in the exams. Although the early Trial is daunting for students it does provide the opportunity for students to focus on their major works in the break or to have a relaxing holiday before their final term of school. It also provides teachers with the opportunity to have a whole term to focus on areas that need improvement and to work in a settled environment without interruption. Year 11 camp Congratulations to students and teachers on a valuable camp to Point Wolstoncroft , which included the mandatory Crossroads program and a variety of activities including kayaking, bushwalking and swimming. A huge thank you to Year Advisor, Carol Roulston and to the staff members who attended, Carolyn Samojlowicz, Nick Johns, Aimee Gundry, Lara Griffin, Andy Cornish and Meg Winter. 書道 –

Calligraphy is the art of producing decorative script or handwriting. It is called shodō (書道) in Japanese.

The Year 11 Japanese Beginners class learnt about calligraphy equipment and techniques, then used a brush or

fude (筆) with black ink or sumi (墨) to create their own calligraphy masterpieces. You can see some of their

works in progress below.

Pittwater High School recently presented ‘Popstars’ the 90’s jukebox musical spectacular. It was written by Neil Gooding and Nicholas Christo, with music selections by Isaac Hayward. This musical is an Australian piece arranged by David Spicer Productions. It includes a ton of throwback songs from the 90’s, a large talented orchestra, energetic cast and crew.

The production dates were from Sunday 26 March, 1pm - the Matinee, evening performances on the 30 and 31 March, 1, 6, 7 and 8 April, 7:30pm at Pittwater High School, Mona Street, Mona Vale.

It is boyband vs girl-band in this hilarious musical that takes you in time to the 90's. Packed with pop smash hits by artists such as The Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, MC Hammer and many more.

Its high school, where ‘Mark’ played by Alec Farrow is madly in love with his girlfriend, queen bee, ‘Shannon Van de Witt’ played by Nina Griffiths. When Shannon learns that pop band impresario, Simon Austin played by Max Straetemans, is the surprise judge at the State Talent Show, she dumps him for her chance at fame.

Mark is devastated. His garage band buddies plan for revenge, changing the style of their grunge band to a boy band to snatch the Talent Show title from Shannon’s ‘Candy Girls’.

Personally, I loved the fun, upbeat energy. It was enter-taining to watch the characters sing, dance, fight, scream, plot and party. The whole atmosphere was exceptional. The songs were very well known and popular, prompting the audience to sing along.

When there was a funny joke or embarrassing moment, the audience laughed hysterically. The group perfor-mances were amusing to watch, while the solo songs were heartfelt and emotional. The way each character voices meshed with the brilliant band made the emotional atmosphere convincing and alluring for the audience.

Taking into consideration and acknowledging that this was an amateur production, the talent was exceptional with some pitch perfect vocals that made for a very engaging performance. It was an uplifting, comical and highly entertaining. Every single participant, including the cast, ensemble, the band and crew worked to-gether uniquely in a variety of ways, giving it everything they had. The cast worked cooperatively with each other and there we no forgotten moments, or interrup-tions.

No doubt, there are all sorts of morals and direct messages running through this story, but one was prevalent, ‘don’t underestimate people’ evident particularly when a shy ‘Charlie’ played by Emily Fogarty auditions for the ‘Candy Girls’ and unexpected-ly blows them away.

Page 6: PITTWATER · 2019. 10. 11. · Pittwater High School recently presented ‘Popstars’ the 90’s jukebox musical spectacular. It was written by Neil Gooding and Nicholas hristo,

My most favourite performances, was the ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ and the finale ‘You Get What You Give’. The movement was big, loud and full of energy. The cast was synchronised and the music was rocking! Stage sets were limited and basic, nothing too elaborate. It included low budget background digital images and a reversal painted display. This added just enough information so the audience could understand the setting. Posters, lockers and fairly lights were just some of the props used to create appropriate scenes.

The costumes were authentic and defiantly representa-tive of the 90’s fashion/style. The lead characters costumes were bright with a variety of changes. The ensemble costumes were colourful and vibrant. The ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ scene had individual and youthful outfits, indicative of teenager style at the time. Whereas, the ‘Let’s Get Loud’, salsa scene, had the entire cast on stage wearing red and black flamboyant attire, which added to the saucy mood.

Lighting was used appropriately, spotlights focused on solos, coloured lights for dance scenes and dimmed lights for set / prop changes. The Orchestra was located below the front of stage, facing the audience. The music could be heard throughout the venue and was immensely engaging. The microphones were clear, although there were delays and glitches at times. The actors handled it professionally and continued the scene as if nothing had happened.

The ‘Brains’, (production mangers) Deb Meyers, Claire Yeomans, Nick Northey and Luke Plant contributed tire-lessly with extraordinary dedication. The cast moved about and spoke their lines seamlessly. There were no apparent pauses or stumbles. The overall presentation was youthful and relevant to the 90’s era.

Pittwater High School’s interpretation of ‘Popstars’ was to add humour wherever possible. A funny moment was when Shane played by Isaac Hogarth posed like a girly teenager dreamily twirling his long hair around his fore-finger. The seductive dance between the two male leads Blake Williams and Isaac Hogarth also had the crowd cracking up. It was not one aspect, but a combination of all, including costumes, lighting, sound, orchestra, choreography, set design, that made this ‘Popstars’ production a huge success.

The performers visibly enjoyed their roles, which was expressed on stage. This enjoyment was immensely engaging, I am sure the enjoyment was due to the huge goal that was achieved by all involved. The audience was captivated and left feeling pumped and wanting more.

The cast were very close, forming new friendships, working together that added to the energy in every performance. They are interested in dancing, singing, acting and theatre which has brought them together forming new relationships. As one cast member mentioned ‘they will forever be a musical family’.

Being part of the band program at Pittwater High is a very fun experience. One of the best things about it is the stage band. There are two stage bands at Pittwater High school; The Junior Stage Band and The Senior Stage Band. Once a year The Senior Stage Band goes to Port Macquarie where the Big Band Blast is held. This event is run over a total of 3 days (Friday night till Sunday afternoon). The Big Band Blast opens up great opportunities for young thriving musicians On the Friday we arrived early evening and went and watched some bands, got dinner and had a jam outside the glass house. This jam let students as young as 11 years old to play with some of the most professional musicians. What made this jam even better is that it was run by the one and only Ed Wilson and John Morrison. This also let the younger musicians improvise in front of an audience while still having fun.

We woke up nice and early on Saturday morning excited for the action packed day ahead of us. The day started with an early breakfast at the local cafe. Then we came back to the caravan park to jump on the bus and go to Panthers which is a local club that hosted The Big Band Blast. Our Senior Stage Band went to watch Judy Bailey's Jazz Connections followed by our performance in the auditorium. The rest of the day we watched some of the other school bands. The last day of The Big Band Blast for 2017 awoke us on the Sunday morning. We went to the festival/parade where we marched the streets of Port Macquarie playing our instruments loud and clear. This was followed by the workshops in the glass house run by John Morrison and Denis Dablazio. This concluded our trip to Port Macquarie and concluded The Big Band Blast for 2017. David Jackson Year 9

Pittwater High's Symphony Orchestra entered the Sydney Eisteddfod on Wednesday 31 May. The Orchestra performed three pieces. The first piece they performed was titled Egyptian Legacy composed by Soon Hee Newbold, orchestrated by Carl Rylund. The second piece they played was Inspirato da Vivaldi composed by Tim Shackleton. They ended their session with a bang as they played an exciting piece called Espana Cani Composed by Marquina Narro, arranged by Albert Wang. All their efforts led to a Highly Commended being awarded. This was an outstanding result given that the orchestra was competing in the highest orchestra level against Meriden, Knox, Fort St and North Sydney Girls High Schools. Also, the orchestra recently heard that they have been accepted, after an audition, into the State Instrumental Festival at the Sydney Opera House. Maddie Piesley (Violin)

The Pittwater under 14 rugby league team put in an outstanding performance at the recent Buckley Shield Gala day in spite of a number of experienced players being unavailable due to injury. They won two games against Hunters Hill (10-6) and Cammeraygal (20-14), lost one in a close encounter with Asquith Boys (6-10) and had a 12 all draw with the much-fancied Balgowlah Boys after leading all game and only drawing in literally the last play of the game, to narrowly miss the finals.

Our captain, Oskar Warner, showed his representa-tive class and as chief playmaker, created plenty of opportunities all day for his team mates. He showed plenty of courage in attack and defence, even though he was carrying a bruised sternum injury. Forwards Nate Bakon and the “Big B”, Byron Grant ran and tackled strongly all day while the effervescent Will Allen at five-eighth, consistently probed defences with great effect. Jackson Humphries scored two excellent tries on the wing, proving that he deserved a starting spot. Jordan Inkster was superb at hooker/dummy half while Ezra Pukeroa from year 7, easily coped with playing up a year, winning the admiration of his team mates, particularly when he scored a crucial try against Asquith Boys. Cooper Clinton and Ethan Gilliard also made some good contribution.

The team were a pleasure to coach on the day and did Pittwater High proud. Coach: Mr Dailhou

We have unearthed the best dance, drama, circus and vocalists- including school spec soloist’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9ZH0xdvhCE, Bobby is truly amazing.

Our dancers combine students from Creative and Performing Art High Schools both state and private across Sydney. The orchestra combines current and former students from the Conservatorium of Music,

with professionals, our flautist plays with the London and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, who in turn are mentoring our high school musicians who are all AMEB grade 8+. The musical conveys a message of resilience- being yourself, not changing who you are and developing self confidence.
