“The experience of being in PYSO has been not only musically enhancing, but life enhancing for my son. In addition to working with you, he enjoys the other students, the coaches, and the entire experience. He comes home from rehearsals happily singing and at peace with himself and the world.”-FromaPYSOparent
“Once again, the concert was GREAT and I had a blast catching up with a few friends and making some new ones. I really hope you plan on doing this again. It was incredible to play at Heinz Hall again, something I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to do again. Please make sure the staff and board know how much it meant to so many alumni.”-FromaPYSOalumna
“Thank you for everything you have done for the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra this year. The concerts have been outstanding, and a tribute to your organization. My son has learned a great deal about music, about responsibility, and about being part of an organization with the highest standards. Those lessons are invaluable. He also really enjoys his friendships with the other members of the orchestra—a wonderful peer group for him.” -FromaPYSOparent
“Many of us remember PYSO days as magical times, and your article has brought back a whiff of the magic and teed up the coming weekend events for me with just the right flavor.”-FromaPYSOalumnus
“We look forward to this performance because we have so enjoyed your perfor-mances in the past. My 11 year old especially is always on the edge of his seat. He just started playing the viola with his elementary school string orchestra last year and has really come to enjoy it, and according to his instructor, he has surpassed her expectations in this short amount of time. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to attend this FREE performance, and BRAVO to all of the performers and those behind the scenes that make this all possible for our community.”-Fromanaudiencemember

“There was a bigger language barrier than I anticipated. But occasionally we had some-thing -- music! It was amazing.”–MariaXu,concertmaster
“It was the coolest, seeing how people across the world live.”–LauraBlock, flute
“What was really exciting were the different cities. I expected Beijing and Shanghai to be wonderful, but I ended up appreciating Hangzhou and Suzhou even more.” –AmeliaCessna, oboe
“China was something I always heard about, but it was incredible to actually be there. I’ll never forget it.”–ErikaPinkerton, violin

PYSO CONCERT TOUR OF ITALY – 2011
THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
“PYSO days were magical times for me. I have Mrs. Maazel to thank for having the insight to assure me, a 15-year old…to play bass in the PYSO, that I ‘will grow into this.’ She was right, and it turned into a life-long avocation that has given me friendships, opportunities and much pleasure.”
“[We] first met on PYSO’s tour of Austria & Switzerland in 1977. After 29 years of marriage, we still talk about this tour as one of the most profound experiences of our lives…The most memorable part of the tour came after a mistake-ridden performance of Dvorak’s 8th (symphony) at a 15th Century Cathedral…Three weeks of touring had started to take its toll on the orchestra. After this performance, we were ready to pack up and go home. We couldn’t understand why Maestro Michalak called a rehearsal on the day before we were to go home. As 100 grumbling young musicians entered the rehearsal room, there sat Dvorak’s 8th Symphony on everyone’s stand. The Maestro took the podium and told us that he couldn’t let us go home with the memory of that lousy performance. In that moment, we learned that in his stern perfectionistic nature was a man who saw the potential of our orchestra and who cared about all of us.”
“My favorite memory of PYSO is the trip to the National Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival in 2002. Our performance of “Pines of Rome” really brought the crowd to their feet.”
“There were few opportunities to play orchestral music in the 1940s, especially for small town children…The youth symphony was a bit overwhelming and an awesome experience.”
“The wonderful experiences shared and friendships established. The European Tour 1972 to the Lausanne Music Festival in Switzerland. The wonderful dinner and reception given by the Maazel’s and the Heinz Family at the Chateau on Lake Geneva, where every table was adorned with a bottle of Heinz ketchup and mustard.”
“The European Tour was fabulous! I enjoyed living with various families and learning about their culture.”
“’Die Meistersingers,’ driving to a concert in my red VW Beetle with the end of Bruce’s bass sticking out the window, the “Pennsylvania ‘76 Riverboat Tour.”
“When I joined the PYSO during my freshman year at Duquesne, Mrs. Maazel was like a mother to the orchestra. Her devotion to the PYSO still stands in my mind…I especially remember Bernard Goldberg, who taught so much to each of us who was privileged to be in the PYSO. What an incomparable experience for a young musician to learn from someone like him…I am so happy that PYSO is still in existence and continues to provide a valuable experience for young musicians.”
“The trip to Switzerland and Italy in 1972 was fantastic!...Memorable moments include…standing ovations from the audience, playing for Princess Grace in Monte Carlo…”
“The trip to Europe in 1972…Tears in Michael Semanitzky’s eyes (and rolling down his face) while we played “Death and Transfiguration” in Lausanne, Switzerland.”
“The 2005 tour to Europe was a blast…I will never forget EdCumming’s facial expressions while conducting Dukas’ “Sorcerer’s Apprentice.””
“There are so many…the trip to Europe in 1972 to play in the International Festival of Youth Orches-tras….Playing American Salute and 1812 with Dr. Semanitzky. We played lots of music, but I always thought of Maestro Semanitzky when I played those pieces in later years.”
“Looking through old programs recently, I came across a program from the First American Festival of Youth Orchestras which the PYSO attended in Washington, D.C. in 1977. My husband…who is a member of the PSO horn section said, ‘Hey, I played in that.’ Sure enough, our names are both in the program, his with the D.C. Youth Orchestra.”

THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
“You certainly captured the essence of the PYSO experience (at least the essence of mine), and you managed to bring back some memories for me that had been hidden for many years. Example: I recall marveling at how Mrs. Maazel, who was maybe 4’ 10” tall when all stretched out, could make all those “big kids” from Carnegie Tech, much less Karl Kritz, do whatever she wanted with just a look or a couple of polite words. I understand it now (and I guess I’ve repressed the memory of the louder words), but I still marvel at how good she was at it. And being inspired by the playing of the best of the “big kids”, such as those you named, was also wonderful.”
