Nine-j«9r-o)d Samantha F r o n hadn't K e n her Chihuahua, Luhi . in alraoat a month. Her mother, Kathie, b r o u ^ t in pictures for her daughter — a cystic fibrosis patient f rom Jack-sonville — but the shots simply didn't suffice.
' B r i n g her up, bring her up. FrosF insisted.
That's when the two-legged crea tures al W d f s o n Children's Hospital stepped in to help.
The Jacksonville hospital started Healing Paws, one of a growing num-ber of dog visitation programs m the country, says Kristen Theisen. who handles pet care issues at Ihe Humane Soc iety of the Uni ted States. Launched in May, the program al-lows long term pMliatric patients like Frosslo reunite with family pets.
- I f s hard t o be in a hospital, espe-cially when you're suffering from a mRjor i l l n e n , ' says hospital presi-dent Michael Autan. "We can fill that

gap in children's lives and help them recover by bringing one of their fam ily members - t h e i r d o f f - to them,"
His wife casually mentioned that she would love to have their Aus tralian shepherd, Ripley, visit her i f she were i n the hospital. A few days later, Aubin passed by the double doors of an empty fire exit hallway tucked near the main entrance and saw it as the "perfect kx-ation."
StilL it wasn't easy to pull off. Family pet visitation programs are
rare because of strict medical and le-gal restrictions, says Sandra Barkec director of the School of Medicine Center for Human-Animal Interac-t ion al Virginia Commonwealth Uni -versity, But a growing number of hospitals ace allowing pet visitations to help patients feel at home, Theis-
en says
Pet dogs can bring in germs and create noise Keeping track of the dog's medical history can be a hassle hospitals don't have the l i m e and resources to han die. Barker says
Hospitals that have family pel visits include MethodUt Hos
p i U l in Teotas, the Christiana Care Health System in Delaware, and
the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Theisen says.
Most medical facilities allow trained Iherapydogs to visit patients, conlrotling everything from the vac-cine i n the dog's body to the sham poo on the dog's fur. In Healing Paws, dogs must be at least 12 weeks old, potty trained and vaccinated. A health certificate f r o m a veterinarian must also vouch for the dog's good health, and all tcys must be provided by the hospital's welfare department. Child Life, Aubin says.
K i d s want this,' says Eric Sandler, a pediatric oncologist and hematcHo-gist, who recalls a t ime when he snuck a patient's dog into the hospi-tal. -Although 8 0 % of our kids are cured of cancel; IPs that last 2 0 % who go through a lot. I f the kid wants to, let them gel down and p b y That's as therapeutic as many of the other things we do.'
The hospiUfs init ial doubts about the practicality and safety of the program turnwl into excitement as Ihe program^ first reunion began. Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Blond of SUrke, Fla., cuddled w i t h her grandmother's dog, Ginger, in the program's 8 by-20 foot hallway.
Tatients aren't just connecUng with a dog - they're connecting w i t h their dog" Sandler says "For chi l -dren, thatk an amazing bond.'

Leading a tearful crowd of more than 35000 baseball fans in a rous iiig rendition of Sweet Caroline. Neil Diamond inspired hope at Boston^ Fenway Park just days a f t ^ the bombings of the Boston Marathon in ApnI. The sofl-rock classic became an unlikely anthem for people who were shaken by the events, sung in ballparks across the nation and sparking the legendary crooner to write Freedom Song (They'll Never Take Ih Down), which honors the in -delible American spirit.
T h i s song has been bubbling inside of me for a long time," Dia mond says. " I didn't know what i t would be when I first started it, but 1 knew It was a I w e song - a love song between a man, his country and his fellow citizens."
W r i t t e n and recorded in about six weeks, Freedom Song was released on iTunes and Amazon Tuesday, ahead of its live debut al the Washington Nationals Milwaukee Brewers base-

A l l of the song's profits wi l l benefit the Boston One Fund and the Wounded Warriors Project, which helps injured servicemembers.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee believes the tune not only encapsulates Ihe patriotism he felt when meeting the first responders in Boston th is spring but also the gump-tinn he has seen across the USA in tils five-decade careM
• I've seen this spirit all over the • niintry," Diamond says. "So many iK'ople have opened their doors to lielp me get the message across, •K hich is America is worth loving and we should be proud of what we have .iiid lie very careful toprotect it ."
And what else lies i n store for the Grammy winner this Fourth of July weekencf? Spending t ime with his family, of courae. but also tirelessly working topromote his latest effort.
" I ' l l be celebrating America in the best possible w ^ , and thafs by extol-ling its generosity to me and my fam-ily, who came to this country 100 years ago," Diamond says.
T h i s is my way of saying thank you, and I'm hoping i t all adds up to something has some kind of message and does some good "
