Rose Smyth is more Twilight thanprincess now, but the clarinet player

who rallied to save the elementary bandprogram will still be crowned Miss PittMeadows 2011 during the Pitt MeadowsDay festivities, Saturday, June 4.

Smyth, like all girls who earn the MissPitt Meadows title, is a Grade 6 studentselected for the position at random. Sheattends Highland Park elementary, whereshe participates in the elementary bandprogram and recently took part in a rally tosave it from budget cuts being consideredby the local school board.

Besides music, Rose loves to dance. Shetakes jazz, hip-hop and contemporaryclasses at the Hill Academy in Pitt Mead-ows. She also takes an art class drawingand painting.

"She tends to like mystic type picturesand flower paintings," says her mother,Elise Smyth.

She can often be found with her nose ina book and will re-read her favourites overand over.

"Rose has a great sense of humourand loves a good laugh. She likes verymuch to hang with her friends and jumpsat every chance to do so," said Elise.

Rose also likes to camp and spent the Vic-toria Day long weekend with her motherand grandmother at her uncle's cabin at

Canim Lake, near 100 Mile House, sittingby the campfire, walking the trails and get-

ting rides on an ATV.Rose also loves her dog, Bella a schnoo -

dle named after the character in the Twi-light series.

"She loves her dog," emphasized EliseSmyth.

Elise and Rose have attended the PittMeadows Day parade and festivities for

years. Rose always liked the Royal Party,so Elise has filled out a form at HighlandPark each year, hoping her daughter wouldat least be picked to be a flower girl. Theynever thought Rose would be picked to beMiss Pitt Meadows. When informed that Rose has been se-

lected, Elise had to ask Rose if she wantedto do it.

"She likes to be her own person," Elisesaid.Rose was very excited to be selected,

Elise added, but a bit nervous about givinga speech. She has to write it about herself, her interests and what she loves about PittMeadows. The mountains and the horizon, the sum-

mer sunset views from her bedroom win-dow, that's what she likes best, said Elise.

"She loves the scenic views."And walks with her mom.

The Miss Pitt Meadowstradition began in 1937, whenthe event was a May Daycelebration and a May queen

was picked. The first Miss Pitt Meadows

was crowned the followingyear from a group of Grade 6students.

Members of the Royal Partyrange from first graders tosixth graders, all chosen bypulling their names out of ahat. As this years Miss Pitt

Meadows, Katie Bachmann will be an ambassador to theCity of Pitt Meadows, makingspeeches during the Canada

Day ceremony, and laying awreath on Remembrance Day.

The retiring Miss Pitt Mead-ows is to be at the Pitt Mead-ows Day festivities to pass thecrown down.

Children wanting to be a partof the Royal Party and meeteligibility criteria are askedto fill out an entry form. Allentry forms received are putinto groups according to theirpositions in the Royal Party. Each group is placed into a hatand names are drawn. celebrate! PITT MEADOWSSATURDAY,JUNE 4, 2011

It's a long day, but after 21 years,Pitt Meadows fire chief Brad Perriestill enjoys it.

From beginning to end, firefightersare intricately linked to P itt MeadowsDay: from laying out stakes forthe parade route in the morning totaking part in it, to the water spraystation, to the salmon barbecue tothe fireworks.

In some way, every member of thedepartment 31 Paid On Call Mem-bers and six full-time staff, includingchiefs is involved in the festivities,Perrie said.

Firefighters will start at 7:30 a.m.,

staking the parade. Then three of four of the depart-

ment's trucks will take part in the

parade, along with its clown entou-rage. Afterwards, they move to thedepartment's water spray station inthe parking lot by Pit t Meadows Her-itage Hall on Harris Road.

By 4 p.m., members are setting upfor the popular salmon barbeque, laying the coals and unpacking thefish. They start preparing for the bar-

beque the night before, seasoningand marinating several hundredsockeye fillets, then putting them on

ice.The BBQ goes from 5-7 p.m. A salmon plate, with salad and a

bun, sells for $8, with all the moneygoing back to the Pitt Meadows DaySociety to keep the event running.

    "We sell out every year," Perrie saidof the salmon. "We like it that way;

we don't want a bunch left over."Shortly after dinner, a crew of

firefighters heads down to PittMeadows Athletic Park to set upfor the fireworks show to end PittMeadows Day. It takes them abouttwo hours to get the wires and mortarready, Perrie said.

The department launches abou$8,000 worth of fireworks for what

will be about a 15 -minute show, spon-

sored again by Cineplex Odeon atMeadowtown Mall.It starts at about 10 p.m."It's a busy day for us," Perrie said.

"The guys work it, but they have fundoing it."Afterwards, they all gather back at

the fire hall.Perrie's been involved in Pitt Mead-

ows Day for the past 20 years."I look forward to it every yea r; it's

    a lot of fun."

    celebrate! PITT MEADOWSSATURDAY,JUNE 4, 2011

    Pitt Meadows Secondary

Celebrates 50 This September Pitt Mead-

ows Secondary School will becelebrating its 50 th Anniver-sary.

The school anniversary or-ganizing committee is hard at work planning the events that will take place on September30 th and are putting a call out toformer students and parents toget in touch with them to sharememories and stories, photo-graphs and other material re-lating to the schools history.

In the first Spectrum year-book, issued in the spring of1964, the schools principal,N. O. Finnigan, wrote: much credit goes to those who

so unselfishly give of their time,

thought and energy to record the

passing days in a form that willlive through the years. As time

    passes by, the daily highlights

of school life are easily forgot-

ten unless they are recorded in

    a lasting fashion. The printed

work, the picture, the sketch pre-

serve for posterity that which we

    are and do to-day.

Those words reflect much of what a Museum and Archivesis about, the preservation ofobjects and documents so the

past will live on through the years to come. It is also whatthe schools anniversary com-mittee is hoping to build on

when they are the Museumsguests in our temporary ex-hibits and programs area onPitt Meadows Day on Saturday

June 4th. Gerri Willms and afew students will be sitting asmall exhibit and informationtable and will be seeking mem-ories and other information, objects and images from for-mer students, parents and oth-ers associated with the school.

The Committee will use someof the material in their exhibitand will share the information

with the Museum and Archivesso it can be preserved for re-

searchers and future anniver-sary committees.Another Pitt Meadows school

also opened in 1961. Meadow-land Elementary on Dewdney

Trunk Road opened to classesin September of that year. In2004 the school was one of twoin the District that fell victim toschool closure, and, thus, nev-er made it to a 50 thAnniversary. In 2008 the Museum receiveda variety of items rescued from

the school before the closure and wants toencourage former students and their fami-lies to also visit our small Meadowland ex-hibit on the same day, and to think aboutbringing in images and other items that re-late to that school for the Museum to havea look at. If you would like to share schoolstories, photos, ephemera or objects, visitthe Pitt Meadows Museum on June 4th andtalk to the Pitt Meadows Secondary Anni-

versary Committee and to Museum staff.

Also, join us at 1:30 p.m. on Pitt Mead-ows Day for a ribbon cutting, activities andcake to celebrate the grand opening of ournew Inside the Dairy Barn exhibit. The Pitt Meadows Museums two sites

are open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Alsoon: the blacksmith is in at the Hoffmannsite and there will be a Stirling engineand Growler demonstration; watch for ourbubble float in the parade and join us forsome good clean fun a fterwards.
