Career & Technical Education Newsletter
I cannot believe that we are entering the last six weeks of the 2010-2011 school year.
Now marks the time in the school year when we begin cramming information in our
students to make sure they are prepared for the CTE Postassessments. Before we know
it, the school year will be coming to an end.
This is also the time of the year when I am preparing budgets. At this moment, I
do not know the specifics of the CTE budget for next year. I have given allotment
information to each principal to help them with scheduling, but this is not definite.
Please know that I am doing everything I possibly can to ensure that everyone has a job
next year. As soon as I know about the budget, I will communicate it to you.
I appreciate all your hard work that you have devoted to making sure our students
are successful. Thanks for all you do!!

supports and enhances related school-based and work-based learning. These organizations provide students
with skills and knowledge to succeed in the new global economy. Several CTSO events were held during the
months of February through April. There were many winners that placed in the state competition. Please
help congratulate the following students for a job well done! All of the students were recognized at the Board

Business & Technology Academy Students Visit
Greenville Utilities
Business and Technology Academy students participated in a fieldtrip to
the Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) on April 28th. The students
toured the Water Treatment Plant, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, the
Warehouse, and Call Center. The students learned about what GUC
looks for in prospective employees while learning about the many facets
of managing a large business. Students were amazed by the intricate
details involved in producing our water and electrical power supply.
Thank you to GUC for allowing us to visit!!

Students at Ayden-Grifton High School Build
Mini-House for Organ Donation
Ayden-Grifton High School have put their hearts into a project that may one day help provide a heart for
someone in need. Charles Payne’s carpentry classes built a one-room model house this semester that was raf-
fled off to raise funds and awareness for organ donations. The materials for the project were provided by a do-
nation from husband and wife transplant recipients Travis and Ellen Hardee of Greenville. The raffle was held
Thursday April 28, 2011 at a reception at 6 p.m. at the Community Schools and Recreation building on County
Home Road. The proceeds went toward the Greenville nonprofit organization’s education efforts.
Nationally, more than 110,000 people are on waiting lists for
organs, with about 3,500 in North Carolina.
―The house was a joint venture,‖ Payne said. A carpentry
hobbyist and heart recipient, Travis Hardee and Payne met
through volunteer work and approached him with an idea
for students to give back to the community while
following the carpentry curriculum.
Pictured are members of a carpentry class at AGHS with a building
they constructed at the school. A raffle was held for the structure
and proceeds went to Carolina Donor Services in Greenville.
