ANNUAL MEETING RETURNS
TO THE REGATTA IN ELIOT, ME
Our Annual Meeting will be held again at Regatta Banquet and Conference Center. The speaker will be Chuck Doleac, Portsmouth attorney and an organizer of the 300th anniversary celebration of the Treaty of 1713 between the Eastern Abenaki tribes and the Massachusetts Colony. He will tailor his talk to the Piscataqua Pioneers, some of whose ancestors were signators to the treaty. Familiar Piscataqua Pioneer names appear as signers of the 1713 Treaty: William and George Vaughn and John Newman’s brother Henry had each been previously hired by the province as agent to represent its interests with the Board of Trade in London; Samuel Penhallow, author of The History of the Wars of New England with the Eastern Indians and also a judge, magistrate, chief justice and Treasurer of the colony; John Plaisted of York, Maine who also had the 1689 petition to raise taxes for defense and military officers. The Treaty committee is also preparing an exhibit to be shown at the John Paul Jones House in Portsmouth. We are all invited following Annual Meeting. There is a metered public parking lot close to the Jones House and Discover Portsmouth (the old library).

ELLEN DENNETT TO SUCCEED FRED BOYLE AS PRESIDENT
Incoming President, Ellen Dennett
Ellen M. Dennett will succeed Fred Boyle as Piscataqua Pioneers President at our Annual Meeting on July 27th, 2013. Ellen is an associate life member of the Piscataqua Pioneers, joining twenty years ago through her spouse James Wilson Dennett, 10th generation direct descendent of John Dennett. Starting her Vice-‐president role eight years ago, she has been an active member helping to manage the Annual Meeting and Banquets, representing the Piscataqua Pioneers at the New England Regional Genealogy Conference this past April and supporting other various council activities. Born in Berlin, New Hampshire, Ellen lived in the "North-‐country" region of NH until moving to the Seacoast region in 1981. Being of French and Italian descent, her youth was filled with cultural and religious practices that enriched her beliefs in the family unit and in caring for others. Beginning her leadership roles early in life, Ellen worked for the Youth Conservation Corp, a Federal program to engage youth in preserving the environment. This work involved maintaining hiking trails and trout streams in Kilkenney National Forest, where she lived in her adolescence.
Early in her adulthood, Ellen became a registered nurse and has been practicing the art of caring for others for thirty-‐seven years. Acquiring a bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from New England College in 1999, she was presented with the award of Academic Excellence. Education is vitally important to her and she has maintained certifications in two fields of nursing. Ellen has been an active member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses for twenty-‐five years, serving on the Seacoast Chapter board for a few of those years. She has taken graduate level classes from the University of NH in Case Management. Employed at Exeter Hospital for twenty-‐eight years, Ellen serves on the Nursing Quality Council, a Master Council for this Magnet Recognized organization. Ellen is also a member of the Nursing Peer Review Committee for the hospital, a subcommittee of the Quality Council. She established and chaired the Unit Based Practice Council for the Out-‐Patient Surgical Unit, where she currently serves as Past Chair for the Unit Council and works in the Pre-‐anesthesia department of that unit. Ellen is also active in the Integrated Surgical Council and works on various committees and lean projects for the organization when called upon to do so. Living in Strafford, NH with her husband James for twenty-‐five years, Ellen served as Secretary for eight years on the neighborhood board for the Isinglass Landowners Association. She enjoys hikes and cross-‐country skiing along the Isinglass River behind her home, and maintains flower and vegetable gardens in the warm seasons. Her more adventurous free time is spent deep-‐sea fishing on the Atlantic Ocean and excursions into the Piscataqua River with her husband on their boat “Seadation”.
During her term as President for the Piscataqua Pioneers, Ellen intends to work towards expanding membership and increasing engagement of members. Hoping to bring forth a sense of responsibility to serve and lead such an important society to the region, Ellen looks forward to serving.

NERGC: Back, L-R: Ellen Dennett, Margaret Dennett, Barbara Alex; Foreground: Peter & Deborah Meigs
Fortunately, some dedicated members agreed to help man the booth: Bea Brown, Kitty and Ted Chadbourne, Ellen Dennett, Margaret Dennett, Bill Drew, Tylene Jousse, Deb and Peter Meigs, Halcyon Springer, Charles Tarbell, and Barbara J. Alex. It was an interesting experience for all, giving us an opportunity to talk about PP, and meet many people who had surprisingly never even heard of us! We had a variety of items at our booth: flyers, bookmarks, notecards, mugs, CDs, and primarily our big Piscataqua Pioneer book. We gave membership applications to most of those people who bought books and others who requested the application. After expenses, our net was $473.41. The next conference will be held in Providence, RI in April 2015.
PORTSMOUTH COMMEMORATES THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1713 TREATY OF PORTSMOUTH
Ft. William and Mary, Portsmouth, NH,
site of the signing of the 1713 Treaty
This summer, Portsmouth will commemorate the 300th anniversary of the 1713 Treaty of Portsmouth between the English and the Native Americans of the Maine and New Hampshire coast. Two special exhibits, “First Nations Diplomacy Opens the Portsmouth Door,” opened on May 1 at the Portsmouth Historical Society’s John Paul Jones House Museum and at Strawbery Banke Museum. The exhibits feature historical artifacts from the era and replicas of the original Treaty from the Library of Congress and the British Archives, signed by New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Native American dignitaries.
Signers of the 1713 Treaty
A series of programs are scheduled at the two museums and at Portsmouth Historic Houses Association properties (including Warner House and Historic New England who own houses dating to the period), the Portsmouth Public Library, and the Piscataqua Pioneers.
