PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN THE DEAD MANS CHEST.

FORT CHARLES. AFTERNOON. (RAINING)(Elizabeth sits alone, in her wedding gown in the poring rain. Lord Becket arrives by The East India Trading Company to arrest them. Will is arrested and brought to Elizabeth)

Elizabeth: Will! Why is this happening? Will: I don’t know. You look beautiful.Elizabeth: I think its bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.(Governor Swann arrives)Swann: Make way! Let me through! How dare you!Stand your men down at once. Do you hear me?!Becket: Governor Weatherby Swann, it’s been to long.Swann: Cutler Beckett?!Becket: It’s Lord now actually.Swann: Lord or not, you have no reason and no authority to arrest this man.Becket: In fact, I do. Mr. Mercer? The warrant for the arrest of one William Turner.(He hands Swann a warrant)Swann: This warrant is for Elizabeth Swann.Becket: Is it? That’s annoying. My mistake. Arrest her.Elizabeth: On what charges?!Becket: Aha. Here’s the one for William Turner. And I have another one for a Mr. James Norrington. Is he present?Elizabeth: What are the Charges?!Swann: Commodore Norrington resigned his commission some months ago.Becket: I don’t believe that was the answer to the question I asked. Will: Lord Beckett! In the category of questions not answered…Elizabeth: …we are under the jurisdiction of the king’s governor of Port Royal and you will tell us what we are charged with.Swann: The charge is (reading from the warrant) “conspiring to set free a man convicted of crimes against the Crown and Empire and condemned to death, for which the…”Becket: …for which the punishment regrettably, is also death.(to Will)Perhaps you remember a certain pirate named Jack Sparrow? Will and Elizabeth: Captain!Elizabeth: Captain Jack Sparrow.

Page 3: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Becket: Captain Jack Sparrow… Yes I thought you might.

CARIBBEAN SEA. BLACK PEARL. MAIN DECK. NIGHT.Gibbs: (singing) Fifteen men on a dead man’s chestYo-ho-ho and a bottle of rumDrink and the Devil had done for the restYo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum (a distant bell sounds, he turns. He looks up to se birds flying in the opposite direction)

CARIBBEAN SEA. ISLAND.NIGHT.(prisoners are led over a bridge into a huge gate)Prison guard: Prisoners, come on.(at another location, coffins are dumped into the ocean. As the float away a crow lands on one of the coffins, and starts pecking on the lid. Suddenly a gun is fired from inside the coffin, and the bird disappears. A hand holding the gun emerges from the hole, then Jack Sparrow breaks out of the lid.)(He finds his hat, straitens it out, and puts it on)Jack: Sorry, mate. (He reaches down and breaks of a skeletal leg)Mind if we make a little side trip? (He starts to row with it) I didn’t think so.

CARIBBEAN SEA. BLACK PEARL. MAIN DECK. NIGHT.(Jack climbs aboard the Pearl)Gibbs: Not quite according to plan.Jack: Complications arose, ensued, where overcome.Gibbs: You got what you went in for, then?Jack: Mhm…(he waves a piece of cloth)(the crew gather around, not looking very pleased)Gibbs: Captain, I think the crew, meaning me as well, were expecting something a bit more shiny, with the Isla de Muerta going all pear shaped, reclaimed by the sea and the treasure with it.Leech: And the Royal Navy chasing us all around the Atlantic.Marty: And the hurricane.Crew: Aye.Gibbs: All in all it seems some time since we did a speck of honest pirating.Jack: Shiny?Gibbs: Aye, shiny.Jack: Is that how you’re all feeling then? That perhaps dear old Jack is not serving your best interests at captain? Cottons Parrot: Walk the plank.

Page 4: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Jack: (draws his pistol) what did the bird say?!Leech: Do not blame the bird.Show us what is on that piece of cloth there.(The skeletal monkey drops down, and snatches the cloth out of Jack’s hand. He shoots the monkey, and the monkey drops it)Gibbs: You know that won’t do no good.Jack: It does me.Marty: It’s a key…Jack: No. Much more better. It is a drawing of a key.Gentlemen, what do keys do?Leech: Keys…unlock things?Gibbs: And whatever this key unlocks, inside there’s something valuable. So we are setting out to find whatever this key unlocks?Jack: No. If we don’t have the key, we can’t open whatever we don’t have that it unlocks. So what purpose would be served in finding whatever need be unlocked, which we don’t have, without first having found the key who unlocks it?Gibbs: So we’re going after this key?Jack: You’re not making any sense at all.Any more questions?Marty: So, do we have a heading?Jack: Ah! A heading. (he finds his compass. But it spins in every direction)Set sail in a…general...that-way direction.Gibbs: Captain?Jack: Come on, snap to and make sail. You know how this works. Go on. (he leaves them)Marty: Have you noticed lately, the captain seems to be acting a bit strange…er?Gibbs: Setting sail without knowing his own heading. Something’s got Jack vexed, and mark my words, what bodes ill for jack sparrow bodes ill for us all.

PORT ROYAL. EAST INDIA TRADING COMPANY OFFICE. DAY.(Will is escorted into the room by soldiers)Guard: Lord Beckett, the prisoner as ordered, sir.Beckett: (Indicating the chains)Those won’t be necessary. (The chains are taken off)(The soldiers leave. Beckett serves a drink)The East India Trading Company has need of your services. We wish for you to act as our agent in a business transaction with our mutual friend CaptainSparrow. Will: More acquaintance than friend. How do you know him?

Page 5: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Beckett: We’ve had dealings in the past. And we’ve each let our mark on the other.(He lifts a red hot glowing rod out of the fire, the tip formed as the letter P)Will: What mark did he leave on you?(He won’t answer)Beckett: By your efforts, Jack Sparrow was set free. I would like you to go to him, and recover a certain property in his possession. Will: Recover. At the point of a sword?Beckett: A Bargain. (He walks over to his desk, retrieves a paper-folder from a small box)Letters of marque. You will offer what amounts to a full pardon. Jack will be free, a privateer in the employ of England. Will: Somehow I doubt that jack will consider employment the same as being free.Beckett: Freedom. Jack sparrow is a dying breed. The world is shrinking, the blank edges of the map filled inn. Jack must find his place in the New World or perish. Not unlike you, Mr. Turner. You and your fiancée face the hangman’s noose. Will: So you get both Jack and the Black Pearl.Beckett: The Black Pearl? Will: The property you want that he possesses.Beckett: A ship? Hardly. The item in question is considerably smaller than that, and far more valuable, something sparrow keeps on his person at all times. A compass?(Off Will’s reaction;)Ah, you know it. Bring back that compass or there’s no deal.

CARIBBEAN SEA. BLACK PEARL. CAPTAIN’S CABIN. NIGHT(Sparrow sits by his desk, trying to figure out a new heading, but the compass won’t stay still. He lifts a rum bottle to drink, but it’s empty)Jack: Why is the rum always gone?(he stands up, immediately loosing his balance, swaggers a bit)Oh…That’s why. (He swaggers down towards the rum cellar, past where the crew is sleeping)As you were, gents.(When he reaches the rum cellar he looks for a new bottle, he finds one but it’s full of sand.)Bootstrap: Time’s up Jack(Jack is spooked, drops the bottle. He turns around and finds him in the other end of the rum cellar)Jack: Bootstrap? Bill Turner.Bootstrap: You look good, Jack.(Jack can’t believe his eyes)Jack: Is this a dream?

Page 6: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Bootstrap: No.Jack: I thought not. If it were, there’d be rum.(Bootstrap hands him a bottle)Bootstrap: You got the Pearl back, I see.Jack: I had some help retrieving the Pearl by the way. Your son.Bootstrap: William? He ended up a pirate after all.Jack: And to what do I owe the pleasure of your carbuncle?Bootstrap: He sent me. Davy Jones.Jack: So it’s you, then. He shanghaied you into service, eh?Bootstrap: I chose it. I’m sorry for the part I played in the mutiny against you jack. I stood up for you. Everything went wrong after that. They strapped me to a cannon. I ended up on the bottom of the ocean, the weight of the water crushing down on me. Unable to move. Unable to die, Jack. And I thought that even the tiniest hope of escaping this fate, I would take it. I would trade anything for it.Jack: It’s funny what a man will do to forestall his final judgment.Bootstrap: You made a deal with him to Jack. He raised the Pearl from the depths for you. Thirteen years you’ve been her captain.Jack: Technically…Bootstrap: Jack. You won’t be able to talk yourself out of this. The terms what apply to me, apply to you as well. One soul bound to crew 100 years upon his ship.Jack: Yes-but the Flying Dutchman already has a captain so there’s really no…Bootstrap: Then it’s The Locker for you! Jones’s terrible leviathan will find you, and drag the Pearl back to the depths and you along with it.Jack: Any idea when Jones might release said terrible beastie?Bootstrap: I already told you Jack. Your time is up.(Bootstrap takes his left hand) It comes now, drawn with a ravenous hunger to the man what bears the black spot.(The black spot appears on Jack’s hand. Bootstrap disappears. Jack panics and runs up on deck, shouting ;)Jack: On deck, all hands! Make fast the bunt gasket! On deck! Scurry! Scurry! I want movement! Movement! I want Movement!Lift the skin up! Keep your loof! Haul those sheets!Run them! Run! Keep running! Run as if the devil himself and itself is upon us!Gibbs: Do we have a heading?Jack: Ah! Run! LandGibbs: Which port?Jack: I didn’t say “port”, I said “land”. Any land.(the monkey swings of the rig, steals Jack’s hat and throws it overboard)Gibbs: Jack’s hat! Bring her about!

Page 7: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Jack: No-no! Leave it! (The whole crew stops, staring at Jack) Run.Gibbs: Back to your stations, the lot of you!(to Jack hiding under the stair) Jack?Jack: Shhh…Gibbs: For the love of mother and child, Jack, what’s coming after us?Jack: Nothing.

CARIBBEAN SEA. FISHING BOAT. DAY.A boat hook snags Jack’s hat out of the water. A short Turkish sailor wrings out the hat; looking pleased with himself he tries it on.

PORT ROYAL. CELL BLOCK. DAY.(Will runs down the stairs and enter the cell block, quickly followed by Governor Swann)Guard: Here, now, you cant be here.Swann: I think you’ll find he can.(Will runs over to Elizabeth, who is locked in one of the cells.)Guard: Mr. Swann?Swann: It’s Governor Swann, still. Do you think I wear this wig to keep my head warm?Elizabeth: Jack’s compass? What does Beckett want with that? Will: Does it matter? I’m to find Jack and convince him to return to Port Royal. In exchange the charges against us will be dropped.Swann: No. We must find our own avenue to secure your freedom. Will: is that a lack of faith in Jack or in me?Swann: That you would risk your life to save Sparrow does not mean he would do the same for anyone else. Now, where’s that dog with the keys. (he whistles)Elizabeth: I have faith in you. Both of you. Where will you find him? Will: Tortuga. I’ll start there and I won’t stop searching till I find him. And then I intend to return here, to marry you.Elizabeth: Properly? Will: Eagerly, if you’ll still have me.Elizabeth: if it weren’t for these bars, I’d have you already. I’ll wait for you. Will: Keep a weather eye on the horizon.(Will leaves. )

ISLANDS, VARIOUS. DAY.(Will starts asking around for Jack)(on a dock;) Sailor: Captain Jack sparrow? Owes me four doubloons. Heard he was dead.

Page 8: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

(on a beach;) Fisherman: Singapore. That’s what I heard. Drunk, with a smile on his face. Sure as the tide, Jack Sparrow turn up in Singapore.(In Tortuga;) Scarlet: Jack Sparrow? I haven’t seen him in a month. When you find him will you give him a message? (Slap) (in the shallows;) Shrimper: Can’t say about Jack Sparrow, but there’s an island just south of the straits where I trade spice for delicious long pork. Cannot say about Jack, but you’ll find a ship there. A ship with black sails.

CARIBBEAN SEA. SHRIMP BOAT. DECK. DAY.(The shrimper nods as they come around the point. The Black Pearl lying on the beach.)Shrimper: (to Will)My brother will take you ashore.

CARIBBEAN SEA. ROWBOAT. DAY.(The brother stops the boat, still in the shallow water)Will: What’s wrong? The beach is right there.Frenchman: C’est trop dangereux. Will: What? Frenchman: C’est trop dangereux, je vous l’avais dit.(when it is clear that the man won’t row him all the way to shore, he stands up)Frenchman: Bon voyage, monsieur.(And jumps into the water)

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. BEACH. DAY.(soaking wet he walks over the sand towards the ship. Calls out;)Will: Jack! Jack Sparrow! Marty! Cotton! Anybody?(he moves towards the dense jungle, Cotton’s parrot lands on a tree limb;)Ah. A familiar face.Cottons Parrot: Don’t eat me.Will: I’m not going to eat you.Cottons Parrot: Don’t eat me.(Wil studies the jungle, looking for a path) No. Don’t eat me.(He soon spots Gibbs’s canteen.)Will: Gibbs?(it’s attached to a rope, he follows it to a dead end. It’s a trap set by the natives Hanging upside down, he’s fencing all around him.) Come on! Lets go! Come on! Who wants it! I can do this all day!(they shoot him with a tranquilizer dart, and he falls asleep)

CARIBBEAN SEA. PELAGOSTA ISLAND. DAY.(The Pelagostos carry Will to their camp. And presents him to their king, which turns out to be Jack Sparrow.)

Page 9: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Pelagosta: (speaks native language to Jack)Kali kali te’en daga!(Jack sits on his throne. Will spots Jack.)Will: Jack? Jack Sparrow! I can honestly say I’m glad to se you!(Jack walks over, doesn’t take any notice of recognizing Will)Jack, it’s me. Will Turner.Jack: (to a pelogosta) Ba se coPelagosta: Ji’in daga, izipiWill: Tell them to let me down.Jack: Ke’le lam. Lam peeky-peeky. Lam eensy-weensy.Lam se’se eunuchy. Snip, snip.Pelagosta crowd: Aahh… Eunuchy. Will: Jack, the compass. That’s all I need. Elizabeth is in danger. We were arrested for trying to help you. Se faces the gallows!Jack: (to pelagosta) Se’se lam shup shup sha, shmani lami shuku. Savvy? Ba liki liki.Pelagostas: Ba liki liki!!Jack: (whispers to will) Save me.(the pelagostos carry Will away)Will: Jack, what did you tell them?! No! What about Elizabeth! Jack!!

PORT ROYAL. CELL BLOCK. DAY.(other-male-prisoners try to reach Elizabeth through the cell bars)Prisoners: (whistles) That’s a good girl. Come a bit closer. We don’t bite. Go on. We won’t bite you.(a Guard opens the cell door)Swann: Come quickly.(Elizabeth hurries out, as they leave…)Elizabeth: Tell me what’s happening.Swann: Our name still has some standing with the king. I’ve arranged a passage to England. The captain is a friend of mine.Elizabeth: No! Will’s gone to find Jack! Swann: We cannot count on William Turner. Come!Elizabeth: He’s a better man than you give him credit for.Swann: This is no time for innocence. Beckett has offered one pardon only – one, and that is promised to Jack Sparrow. Even if will succeeds, do not ask me to endure the sight of my daughter walking to the gallows. Do not. Perhaps I can ensure a fair trial for Will if he returns.(he helps- or rather throws- Elizabeth into a waiting carriage)Elizabeth: A fair trial for Will ends in a hanging.Swann: Then there is nothing left for you here.(he slams the door shut, and climbs up)

PORT ROYAL. PRIVATE DOCK. NIGHT.

Page 10: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

(they arrive)Swann: (to Elizabeth) Wait inside.(to the captain) Captain?

(the captain drops to the ground, Mr. Mercer wipes of a bloody knife)(Governor Swann gasps)Mercer: Evening Guv’nor. Shame, that. He was carrying this. It’s a letter to the king. It’s from you.Swann: No… (guards surround the carriage) Elizabeth… What are you doing?Mercer: Where is she?Swann: Who?

PORT ROAL. NIHGT.(Elizabeth is hiding. Becket walks into the room, and notices that the letters of marquee are gone)Beckett: No doubt you’ve discovered that loyalty is no longer the currency of the realm, as your father believes.Elizabeth: Then what is?Beckett: I’m afraid currency is the currency of the realm.Elizabeth: I expect then, that we can come to some sort of understanding. I’m here to negotiate.Beckett: I’m listening. (she draws a gun at him) I’m listening intently.Elizabeth: These letters of marquee, they are signed by the king.Beckett: Yes, and they’re not valid until the bear my signature and my seal.Elizabeth: Or else I would not still be here. You sent Will to get you the compass owned by Jack Sparrow. It will do you no goodBeckett: Do explain.Elizabeth: I have been to the Isla de Muerta. I have seen the treasure myself. There is something you need to know.Beckett: Ah I see. You think the compass leads only to the Isla de Muerta and so you hope to sane me from an evil fate. But you mustn’t worry. I care not for cursed Azteck gold. My desires are not so provincial. There’s more than one chest of value in these waters. So perhaps you may wish to enhance your offer.(Elizabeth puts the gun under his chin, and cocks it)(they move over to the desk)Elizabeth: Consider into your calculations that you robbed me of my wedding night. Beckett: So I did… A marriage interrupted…or fate intervenes? You are making great efforts to ensure Jack Sparrow’s freedom.

Page 11: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Elizabeth: these aren’t going to Jack.Beckett: Oh, really? To ensure Mr. Turner’s freedom then, I’ll still want that compass. Consider that in your Calculations.(she almost rip the letters from his hands, and leave the room still pointing the gun at him )

CARIBBEAN SEA. SMALLBOAT. DAY.(Pintel is rowing the boat, Ragetti’s reading the Bible)Ragetti: Well I say it was Devine Providence what escaped us from jail.Pintel: And I say it was me being clever! (the dog with the keys stand up in the boat) Ain’t that right poochie?Ragetti: well how do you know it weren’t Divine Providence what inspired you to be clever? Anyways, I ain’t steali’n no ship.Pintel: It ain’t steali’n. It’s salvagi’n. And since when did you care?Ragetti: Since we’re not immortal no more. We gotta take care of our immortal souls. Pintel: You know you cant read?Ragetti: It’s the Bible. You get credit for trying.Pintel: Pretendi’n to read the Bible is a lie. That’s a mark against…(he points up)(the dog is barking; they turn, to see the Black Pearl stranded on the beach)Pintel: Look! There it is.(the dog jumps of board and swims toward the shore)Ragetti: What’s got into him?Pintel: Must’ve seen a catfish.(they laugh)Ragetti: (at the dog) Stupid mongrel!(not long after, the boat is caught in the breaks, tipped over, and they are both washed onto shore)

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. BEACH.DAY (BY THE BLACK PEARL)Pintel: Come on! (they head towards the ship. As they both laugh cheerfully)It’s ours for the taking!Ragetti: The tide’s coming in. That should help. And salvagin’ is savin’ in a manner of speaking.Pintel: There’s the truth of it!(they hear distant drumming)Ragetti: Suppose we better save it as soon as we can, what with our souls in such a vulnerable state and all.Pintel: Amen to that.

Page 12: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. PELAGOSTA CAMP. DAY.(the Pelagostas are and dancing and getting ready for a ritual. They put a toe necklace on Jack.)Jack: Thank you.

PELAGOSTA ISLAND.BONE CAGES. DAY.(all the crew are hanging in bone cages out in a deep ravine)Will: Why would he do this to us? If Jack is the chief…Gibbs: Aye, the Pelagostos made Jack their chief, but he only remains chief as long as he acts like a chief. Will: So he has no choice. He’s a captive as much as the rest of us.Gibbs: Worse, as it turns out. See the Pelagostos believe that Jack is a God in human form, and they intend to do him the honor of releasing him from his fleshy prison. They’ll roast him and eat him. Will: Where’s the rest of the crew?Gibbs: These cages we’re in, weren’t built till after we got here. The feast is about to begin.Jack’s life will end, when the drums stop. Will: Well we can’t just sit here and wait then can we.

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. PELAGOSTA CAMP. DAY.(the pelagostos are prepearing for the feast, making a huge fire ready.)Jack: No, no. Oi! No, no. More wood. Big fire. Big fire. I am chief. Want big fire. Come on.Oi! A bogy snickle snickle. Tout de suite. Come on. More wood.(they put more wood on the fire, but when they turn Jack is not there)(Jack is running over a bridge and out towards another part of the village, and almost runs over the end of a cliff……………)

(When he comes back out, the whole village has come after him)Jack: Oh, Bugger. (he uses some spices he found in the hut as a deodorant)A little seasonin’, eh?(they tie him up and hang him over the huge pile of wood)Jack: Well done.

PELAOSTA ISLAND. BONE CAGES. DAY.(the crew are swinging the cages back and forth to reach the ravine walls. Eventually they make it)Gibbs: Put your legs through! Start to climb! Will: Come on, men! It’ll take all of us to crew the black pearl!Man: Actually, you wouldn’t need everyone. About six would do(They all stop to listen; the drums have stopped)

Page 13: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Oh, dear. Will: Hurry!Crewman: Come on!Sailor: (who’s not helping) Come on! Is that all you’ve got!(One of the Pelagosta walks above them. Will spots him.)Will: (whispering)Wait! Stop!(the other cage stops for a moment, but continues on despite Wills warning. Suddenly one of the crewmen grabs hold of a snake instead of the vine)Man: Ah! Snake!(They panic. And fall down the ravine. Screaming they are spotted by the Pelagosta)Will: Move!

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. PELAGOSTA CAMP. DAY.(All the pelagosta are gathered around Jack, tied up over a pile of dry wood.Another pelagosta runs over, with a lit torch.)Man: Ah! Fie fie! All: Ah! Fie fie!(He is about to light the fire, when the other pelagosta comes rushing over to tell them about the escaped prisoners. Trey all look over at jack)Jack: Well, go on! Go get them. Pe lah lah! All: Pe lah lah!(The man with the torch drops it, as they all scurry off to capture the escaped prisoners. The torch is now lying dangerously close to the dry wood beneath Jack.)Jack: No, no! Oi! No, no! Not good.(He starts to blow at it, but to no use. The dry wood catches fire.)

Will: Cut it loose! Find a rock!

Will: Roll the cage!Man: Come on!

Will: Lift the cage!Gibbs: Come on, lads! Lift it like a lady’s skirt!

Man: This way lads!

Jack: Stop it!

Page 14: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Bugger.

PELAGOSTA ISLAND. BLACK PEARL. DAY. (TIDE COMING IN.)Ragetti: (from the beach) Haul loose the mooring line! The Mooring line!(On the Black Pearl, the monkey steels Pintel’s eye)Pintel: Thief! Little hairy thief! Give it back! Don’t bite it!Rageitti: Haul loose the mooring line!Pintel: He’s got me eye. He wont give it back!Ragetti: Well how’d you get it back last time!?(Gibbs, Will and the rest of the crew come running towards the ship)Gibbs: Exellent! Our work’s half done!Ragetti: We done it for you, knowing you’d be coming back!Gibbs: Make ready to sail boys! Will: What about Jack? I won’t leave without him!Jack: Oi!!(They spot Jack running along the beach. Soon they spot the whole Pelagosta tribe running after him.)Will: Time to go.Gibbs: Cast off those lines! Make ready to cast off!Jack: Oi! (The dog barks at all the Pelagostas) Good doggy. (He turns around) Ah!(Finally he reaches the Black Pearl, and climbs halfway up the net.)Alas, my children, this is the day you shall all remember as the day that you almost…(A wave splashes over him from behind, and soaks him to the bone)…Captain Jack Sparrow.

BLACK PEARL. MAIN DECK. DAY.Gibbs: Let’s put some distance between us and this island and head out to open sea.Jack: Yes to the first, yes to the second, but only insofar as we keep to the shallows as much as possible.Gibbs: That seems to be contradictory, captain.Jack: I have every faith in your reconciliatory navigational skills. Mr. Gibbs. Now, where is that monkey? I want to shoot something!(The monkey climbs on the rigging above, meanwhile dropping the eyeball down to the waiting Ragetti. Jack draws his gun.)Will: Jack.Jack: Ah.

Page 15: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Will: Elizabeth is in danger.Jack: Have you considered keeping a more watchful eye in her. Or maybe just locking her up somewhere. (Will follows Jack up to the helm)Will: She is locked up in a prison, bound to hang for helping you!Jack: There comes a time when one must take responsibility for one’s mistakes.(Will draws his sword at Jack)Will: I need that compass of yours, Jack. I must trade it for her freedom.(Jack Calmly pushes it away. And walks over to Gibbs)Jack: Mr. Gibbs. Gibbs: Captain?Jack: We have a need to travel upriver.Gibbs: By need do you mean a trifling need? Fleeting? As in, say, a passing fancy?Jack: No, a resolute and unyielding need. Will: What we need to do is make sail for Port Royal with all haste.Jack: William, I shall trade you the compass if you will help me, to find this. (He shows him the piece of cloth with the key)Will: You want me to find this?Jack: No. You want you to find this, because the finding of this finds you incapacitorially finding and or locating in your discovering the detecting of a way to save your dolly belle, ol’what’s-her-face. Savvy? Will: This is going to save Elizabeth?Jack: How much do you know about Davy Jones? Will: Not much.Jack: Yeah, it’s gonna save Elizabeth.

EDINBURGH TRADER. MAIN DECK. DAY.A sailor swabs the deck, and comes upon Elizabeth’s discarded wedding dress. He picks it up.Later…Captain Bellamy pushes through the group of shouting sailors. At the center of the argument are the Quartermaster and the Burser, involved in a tug of war over the dress. Bellamy: What’s all this!?If you both fancy the dress, you’ll just have to share and wear it one after the other.Burser: It’s not like that, sir. The ship is haunted.Bellamy: Is it now? And you?Quartermaster: There is a female presence amongst us here, sir. All the men, they can feel it.

Page 16: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Sailor: It’s the ghost of a lady widowed before her marriage, I figure it. Searching for her husband, lost at sea.Cook: A virgin too, likely as not. And that bodes ill by all accounts.(Elizabeth is standing nearby, disguised as one of the crew.)Burser: I say that we throw the dress overboard and we hope the spirit follows it.Quartermaster: No! That would just anger the spirit, sir. What we need to do is find out what the spirit needs, and then just get it back to her.(The two of them start tearing at the dress again)Bellamy: Enough! Enough! (he takes the dress) You’re a pair of superstitious goats and it’s got the best of ya.Now this appears to be no more as we have a stowaway a’ board. A young woman by the look of it. I want you to search the ship and find her. Oh, and-eh… she’s probably naked.(The men scatter, searching with enthusiasm. As does Elizabeth, dressed as one of them.)

BLACK PEARL – SMALLBOAT. UPPRIVER. DAYWill: Why is Jack afraid of the open ocean?Gibbs: Well, if you believe such things, there’s a beast does the bidding of Davy Jones. A fearsome creature with giant tentacles that’ll suction your face clean off, and drag an entire ship down to the crushing darkness. The Kraken. They say the stench of its breath…(he shudders)Imagine, the last thing you know on God’s green earth is the roar of the Kraken and the reeking odor of a thousand rotting corpses(beat)If you believe such things. Will: And the key will spare him that?Gibbs: Well, that’s the very question Jack wants answered.Bad enough even to go visit…(lowers his voice) her. Will: Her?Gibbs: Aye.

SWAMP. NIGHT.Jack: No worries, mates. Tia Dalma and I go way back. Thick as thieves. Nigh inseparable we are… where…have been…before.(Gibbs walk up to him)Gibbs: I’ll watch your back.Jack: It’s me front I’m worried about.Gibbs: (to Will;) Mind the boat. Will: (to Pintel;) Mind the boat.Pintel: (to Ragetti;) Mind the boatRagetti: (to Marty;) Mind the boat.Marty: (to Cotton;) Mind the boat.

Page 17: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Cotton’s Parrot: (squawk) Mind the boat.(The parrot flies off, leaving Cotton alone by the boats. Disappointed he sits back down to wait.)

TIA DALMA’S SHACK. NIGHT.(Jack walks inside, the others following behind)Tia Dalma: Jack Sparrow.Jack: Tia Dalma.(He strides over, almost knocking his head on a hanging jar of rocks)Tia Dalma: I always knew the wind was going to blow you back to me one day. (she spots Will, and walks toward him) You…you have a touch of destiny about you. William TurnerWill: You know me?Tia Dalma: You want to know me?(Jack runs over between them , looking worried/jealous)Jack: There’ll be no knowing here. We’ve come for help and we’re not leaving without it. (Leads Tia Dalma carefully away. And scowls at Will while doing so.) I thought I knew you.Tia Dalma: Not so well as I had hoped. ComeJack: Come.Tia Dalma: (to will) What service may I do you? (to jack) You know I demand payment!Jack: I brought payment. (he whistles, Ragetti brings over a cage covered with cloth. Jack takes it, removes the cloth, the monkey is trapped inside.)Look!(he pulls out his gun, and shoots the monkey) An undead Monkey. (puts the cage on the table) Top that!(Tia Dalma opens the cage to let the monkey out)Gibbs: Don’t! You’ve no idea how long t took us to catch that.Tia Dalma: The payment is fair. Will: We’re looking for this. (He folds out the piece of cloth showing the key.) And what it goes to.Tia Dalma: The compass you bartered from me, it cannot lead you to this?Jack: Maybe…why?Tia Dalma: (amused) I hear you. Jack Sparrow does not know what he wants. Or do you know, but are loath to claim it as your own?Your key go to a chest. And it is what lay inside the chest you seek, don’t it?Gibbs: And what is inside?Ragetti: Gold. Jewels. Unclaimed properties of valuable nature.Pintel: Nothing bad I hope.

Page 18: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Tia Dalma: You know of Davy Jones, yes? A man of the sea. A great sailor. Until he ran afoul of that which vex all men. Will: What vexes all men?Tia Dalma: What indeed?Gibbs: The sea?Ragetti: Sums?Pintel: The dichotomy of good and evil?Jack: A woman.Tia Dalma: A woman. Him fell in love.Gibbs: No, no, no, no. I Heard it was the sea he fell in love with. Tia Dalma: Same story, different versions, and all are true. See, it was a woman as changing and harsh and untamable as the sea. Him never stopped loving her. But the pain it cause him was too much to live with, but mot enough to cause him to die. Will: What exactly did he put into the chest?Tia Dalma: Him Heart.Pintel: Literally or figuratively? Ragetti: He couldn’t literally put his heart in a chest. Could he?Tia Dalma: It was not worth feeling what small, fleeting joy life brings. And so…him carve out him heart, lock it away in a chest and hide the chest from the world. The key, he keep on him at all times. Will: (to Jack) You knew this!?Jack: I did not. I didn’t know where the key was. But now we do. So all that’s left is to climb aboard the Flying Dutchman, grab the key, you go back to Port Royal and save your bonnie lass, eh? (he turns to leave)Tia Dalma: Let me see your hand.(He turns around, reaching out his right hand toward her. Off her reaction, rolls his eyes and gives her the left instead. She unties the piece of cloth tied around his hand. Revealing the Black Spot.)Gibbs: (gasps) The Black Spot!Ragetti: The Black Spot!Pintel: The Black Spot!Jack: My eyesight’s as good as ever, just so you know.(Tia Dalma disappears further inside the tree house, rummaging through her belongings)Tia Dalma: I have just the thing. Now, where did I put it? (clattering) My little beauty, where are you? Such a long time in such a mess. (She reappears) Davy Jones cannot make port. Cannot step on land but once every ten years. Land is where you are safe, Jack Sparrow, and so you will carry land with you. (she hands him a jar of dirt)Jack: Dirt? This is a jar of dirt?Tia Dalma: Yes.Jack: Is the jar of dirt going to help?

Page 19: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Tia Dalma: If you don’t want it, give it back.Jack: No.Tia Dalma: Then it helps. Will: It seems we have a need to find the Flying Dutchman.Tia Dalma: (She scoops up the crab claws in her hands) A touch of destiny (and throws them on the table)

CARIBBEAN SEA. NIGHT.An archipelago matches the pattern of the crab claws on the table

CARIBBEAN SEA. ARCIPELAGO. NIGHT.Waves pound against a scutteled ship, run aground on the rocks.

BLACK PEARL. MAIN DECK.NIGHT.Will: That’s the Flying Dutchman? In the glow of an oil lantern, Jack and Gibbs stare at the ship, clearly scared. Will is surprised. Will: She doesn’t look like much.Jack: Neither do you. Do not underestimate her.Jack elbows Gibbs to say play along.Gibbs: Must have run afoul of the reef.Jack: So what’s your plan, then? Will: I row over, search the ship until I find your bloody key. Jack: And if there are crewmen. Will: I cut down anyone in my path.Jack: I like it. Simple. Easy to remember.Ragetti: (to Will; now climbing down towards the longboat) Your chariot awaits you sire.Jack: (calls out to Will in the longboat) Oi! If you do happen to be captured, just say Jack Sparrow sent you to settle his debt. Might save your life.Ragetti: Bon voyage.Jack: (to Gibbs) Douse the laps.

OCEAN. LONGBOAT.NIGHT.The Black Pearl falls back in the distance, lit my lanterns. One by one the lamps are doused.

SCUTTELED SHIP. MAIN DECK.NIGHT.Will lights a lantern. The ship looks empty, deserted, except for dead bodies strewn about. He hears an odd sound, a rope running through a squeaking pulley. Then spots a frightened sailor pulling a rope, trying to raise a sail.

Page 20: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Will: Sailor?Sailor: Hoisting the jib, Captain’s orders. Will: Sailor! The sailor repeats his pointless actions.Sailor: Hoisting the jib. Bring up with a round turn. Will: There’s no use. You’ve run aground.Sailor: No . . . beneath us . . . foul breath.A body falls down from the rigging. Seemingly still alive, Will runs to help.He turns him over, only to see that the mans face is gone. Sucked completely off, just like Gibbs’s story. The sea churns. Will stands up, and looks past the rail…The Flying Dutchman appears, rising out of the ocean. She settles for a moment, and then glides up alongside the scuttled ship. Will jumps up on the rail to stare at the vast ship. Figures start to appear out of the shadows. They are the crew members of Davy Jones. They discover Will.Maccus: Down on your marrow bones and pray! And start to fightWill: Get back! Get Back! Will cannot evade his enemy. And eventually Koleniko slams Will in face, and knocks him out.

SCUTTLED SHIP. MAIN DECK. NIGHT.The surviving sailors are lined up, on their knees, waiting judgment. Will is among them, the final sailor in line. Davy Jones appears on deck.Maccus: (to Davy Jones) Five men still alive, the rest have moved on.Jones moves down the line of trembling men. And stops at the most terrified one, the Helmsman. He leans down close, the Helmsman is even more terrified.Davy Jones: Do you fear death? Do you fear that dark abyss? All your deeds laid bare. All your sins punished. I can offer you, an escape.Chaplain: (calls out) Don’t listen to him!Jones walks up to the Chaplain, and grabs him at the neck.Davy Jones: Do you not fear death?Chaplain: I’ll take my chances sir.Davy Jones: (to Greenbeard) To the depths. They slit the Chaplains throat and throw him of the ship.Sailor: You cruel blackguard.Davy Jones: (in sudden anger) Life is cruel! Why should the afterlife be any different? I offer you a choice. Join my crew, and postpone the judgment. One hundred years before the mast. Will ye serve?Helmsman: I will serve.

Page 21: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

He continues to move down the line, and then he spots Will.Davy Jones: You are neither dead nor dying. What is your purpose here? Will: (not quite willing to speak) Jack Sparrow sent me to settle his debt.Jones is first surprised, then insulted.Davy Jones: What is your purpose here? Will: Jack Sparrow . . . sent me to settle his debt.Davy Jones: Did he now. I’m sorely tempted to accept that offer.

THE BLACK PEARL. MAIN DECK. NIGHT.Hidden in darkness, Jack Sparrow watches the scene through his spyglass.Through the spyglass, a distant Jones speaks to Will on the deck of the scuttled ship. Jones glances over his shoulder, back towards Jack. As if he senses Jack is there. Suddenly he appears right in front of Jacks face.Davy Jones: You have a debt to pay. For thirteen years you’ve been Captain of The Pearl. That was our agreement.Jack: Technically I was only captain for two years - then I was viciously mutinied upon . . .Davy Jones: Then you were a poor captain but a captain nonetheless! Have you not introduced yourself all these years as Captain Jack Sparrow! The Crew laugh. Jack: You have my payment, one soul to serve on your ship is already over there. Davy Jones: One soul is not equal to another.Jack: Ah! So we’ve establishes my proposal is sound in principle, and now we’re just haggling over price! Davy Jones: Price?Jack: Just how many souls do you think my soul is worth?Davy Jones: One hundred souls . . . three days.Jack: You’re a diamond, mate. Send me back the boy, and I’ll get started, right off.Davy Jones: I keep the boy. A good faith payment. That leaves you only ninety nine more to go.Jack: Have you not met Will Turner? He’s noble and heroic, a terrific soprano…he’s worth at least four, maybe three and a half.Jones is unmovedAnd did I happen to mention…he’s in love. With a girl. Due to be married. Betrothed. Dividing him from her and her from him, would only be half as cruel as actually allowing them to be joined in holy matrimony. Eh?Jones seems lost in thought.Davy Jones: I keep the boy. Ninety-nine souls.

Page 22: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

But I wonder Sparrow, can you live with this. Can you condemn an innocent man, a friend, to a lifetime of servitude, in your name, while you roam free?Jack: Yep. I’m good with it.Shall we seal it in blood, I mean . . . ink. They shake “hands”.Davy Jones: Three days. Jones and his crew leave.Jack lifts his hand to se the Black Spot fade, and disappear.Jack: Eh, Mr Gibbs?Gibbs: Aye?Jack: I feel sullied and unusual.Gibbs: And how do you intend to harvest these ninety-nine souls in three says?Jack: Fortunately he was mum as to the condition in witch these souls need be.Gibbs: Ah! Tortuga.Jack wipes his hand on Gibb’s shirt.Jack: Tortuga.

EDINBURGH TRADER. CAPTAINS CABIN. NIGHT.

Captain Bellamy and two of his men are discussing profits, clearly unhappy of the outcome.Bellamy: It’s an outrage! Port tariffs, berthing fees, wharf handling and, heaven help us, pilotage! Are we all to work for the East India Trading Company then? Quartermaster: I’m afraid, sir, Tortuga is the only free port left in these waters.Bellamy: A pirate port is what you mean. Well, I’m sorry. An honest sailor is what I am. I make my living fair and I sleep well each night, thank you!-----and the Quartermaster—facing the ships windows—suddenly notice a ghostly figure floating by.-------: Sir!They all go to the window and watch as it passes by another time.

They scuttle up on deck and watch the figure—which is actually Elizabeth marionetteing her old wedding dress from high upon the rafters—hanging mid air in front of them.Sailor: She wants you to do something.Bellamy: She’s trying to give a sign.

Page 23: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Elizabeth swings the dress out off the railing and back over the other side. In the process knocking over a lantern to light the oil on the floor. But the sailors only follow the dress to th other side of the ship.Bellamy: Over there! Look for a sign!Quartermaster: Look, there! There it is! There’s the sign!Sailor: That’s seaweed.Quartermaster: Seaweed could be a sign.Elizabeth lowers herself down behind them.Sailor: Looks like entrails.Sailor: That would be a bad sign.Elizabeth: (imitating a manly voice) What’s that over there? The sailors turn around and spot the burning oil on the deck, spelling: Tortuga.

TORTUGA. CANTINA. NIGHT.

(Gibbs sitting at a table, recruiting men. A very old man stands at the head of a short line of hopeful sailors.)Gibbs: And what makes you think you’re worthy to crew the Black Pearl?Very Old Man: Truth be told, sir, I’ve never sailed a day in me’ life. I figure I should get out and see the world while I’m still young.Gibbs: You’ll do. Make your mark. Sign the roster.Irishman: Thanks very much.Jack: (to Gibbs) How we going?Gibbs: Including those four, that gives us…four.(Jack continues to shake his compass.)Gibbs: (to the next man in line) And what’s your story?Norrington: My Story. It’s exactly the same as your story, jut one chapter behind. I chased a man across the seven seas.

Page 24: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

(Jack now suddenly realizes who Gibbs is talking to. Getting edgy, he stops fidgeting with his compass.)Norrington: (cont.) The pursuit cost me my crew, my commission, and my life.Gibbs: Commodore?Norrington: No, not any more. Weren’t you listening? I nearly had you all of Tripoli.(Jack grabs a plant, planning to hide behind it.)Norrington: (cont.) I would have if not for the hurricane.Gibbs: Lord. You didn’t try to sail through it?Norrington: So do I make your crew, or not? You haven’t said where you’re goin’? Somewhere nice!?(Norrington flips the table on Gibbs, sending him flying.)Norrington: (shouting) So am I worthy to serve under Captain Jack Sparrow!?(Jack tries to sneak by, holding the palm branch he grabbed earlier. Norrington puts a gun on him.)Norrington: (cont’d) Or should I just kill you now.Jack: You’re hired.Norrington: Sorry, old habits and all that.(Two men step in and grab Norrington)Skinny Man: Easy sailor!Irishman: That’s our captain you’re threatenin’!(A wild shot goes off, and the whole bar starts to fight. Jack and Gibbs glance at each other)Jack: Time to go.Gibbs: Aye!(Elizabeth enters and fights besides Norrington. As Jack and Gibbs try to slip out, Jack is busy swapping hats. He passes a man sitting atop the stairs and swaps his hat)Jack: Thanks, mate.(as he gives him a friendly nudge, he falls off the railing)Jack: Oh…(as they continue, a man is about to be thrown over the rail, they stop, Jack puts the hat on his head and steps back)Jack: Carry on.(Elizabeth and Norrington, now surrounded by angry sailors, stand with their backs against a pillar)Norrington: Come on then! Who wants some? Form an orderly line and I’ll have you all, one by one. Come on, who’s first.(Elizabeth picks up a bottle, turns, and smashes it on Norrington’s head)Elizabeth: I just wanted the pleasure of doing that myself

Page 25: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Page 26: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Mans Chest Movie Script.

Jack: Darling, I am truly unhappy to have to tell you this. But through an unfortunate and entirely unforeseeable series of circumstances that have nothing whatsoever to do with me, poor Will was press-ganged into Davy Jones’ crew.Elizabeth: Davy Jones?Norrington: Oh please. The captain of The Flying Dutchman.Jack: You look bloody awful. What are you doing here?Norrington: You hired me. I can’t help it if your standards are lax.Jack: You smell funny.Elizabeth: Jack! All I want is to find Will.(That is not news to Jack, but the way she phrased it sparks an idea.)Jack: Are you certain? Is that what you really want most?(Elizabeth is not certain what he’s getting at)Elizabeth: Of course.Jack: Because I would think you’d want to find a way to save Will most.Elizabeth: And you’d have a way of doing that?Jack: Well…there is a chest.Norrington: Oh dear.Jack: A chest of unknown size and origin.(Pintel, hauling a large barrel with Ragetti, can’t help from interjecting)Pintel: What contains the still-beatin’ heart of Davy Jones!Ragetti: (mimes a beating heart) Thump-thump, Thump-thump.Jack: And whoever possesses that chest possesses the leverage to command Jones to do whatever it is he or she wants.
