Pirate Treasure Hunt Needed Supplies:
4 Laminated Grid Maps of Fantasy Island labeled with each group flag
4 red, green, blue, black wet erase markers
4 sets of stickers labeled 1-5 for group members
Group flags
4 Pencils
4 Solution Sheet
4 Sets of riddle cards (4 each)
4 Riddle Answer Sheet
Large Sharpie Marker
Candy Coins (optional reward)
Final Treasure on front board (written or poster)
Calculator
4 buckets
Tape (hang posters)
1. Students desks will be separated into four groups of four
Each desk will be labeled with a number 1-4 or 1-5
Groups will be given a crew name and flag
o Jolly Roger Crew
o Davy Jones Crew
o Blackbeard Crew
o Captain Barbosa Crew
2. Four grid maps of fantasy island will be laminated and posted on the wall
3. Teacher will read a Pirate poem and show the instructional PowerPoint for the activity.
4. Student 1, from each group, will be asked to put a red dot, with wet erase marker, on the
map containing their group’s flag. The student will write start next to the point.

5. Student 2, from each group, will be asked to put a red dot, with wet erase marker, on the
map to the right (clockwise) of their group’s map. Then asked to connect the dots with a
red line.
6. Student 3, from each group, will be asked to put a red dot, with wet erase marker, on the
map two maps to the right (clockwise) from their group’s map.

7. Student 4, from each group, will be asked to put a red dot, with wet erase marker, on the
map three maps to the right (clockwise) from their group’s map.
8. Student 1 or 5, will be asked to put an X on the last open point and write treasure on their
group’s map. Student will take their groups map back the group.

9. Each student will be given a role in the group
Student 1: Map Scribe
o The student will use the wet erase markers to create 3 right triangles. The
red lines of the map will be the hypotenuse or C side length of each right
triangle. Draw blue marker to create the B sides of each right triangle. Use
the green marker to create the A sides of each right triangle.
o The student will label on map the lengths of the sides of each right triangle
with the black wet erase marker. Except the hypotenuse or C side length of
each right triangle.
o The student will label the hypotenuse length once discovered by the group.
Student 2: Formula Scribe
o The student will be responsible for filling out the group’s solution sheets
for each right triangles.
Student 3: Calculator Guard
o The student will be in charge of calculating numbers on the calculator.
Student 4: Clue Guardian/ Presenter
o The student will read the clues to the group and write answers on Riddles
sheet
Student 4 or 5: Clue Guardian/ Presenter
o The student will raise hand for the teacher to approve answers to their
triangles and receive riddles.
o The student will be responsible for writing group riddle answers in the
appropriate spot on the front board.
10. Each group will solve for the first triangle’s hypotenuse, connected to start point. First
triangle is connected to the starting point.

11. Student 4 or 5 will raise their hand when…
Student 1 has drawn and labeled triangle one on the map with accurate lengths on
all sides
Student 2 has filled out the solution sheet for triangle one.
Student 3 has calculated the numbers
12. The teacher will review the groups answer to triangle 1, if correct the students will
receive their groups first riddle.
13. Student 4 will read the clue/riddle and group will determine the answer.
14. Student 4 will record group answer on the Riddle Answer Sheet.
15. Student 4 or 5 will write the Riddle Answers on the board in the appropriate place.
16. Repeat for triangles 2 and 3.
Receive a riddle after each triangle.
17. Add all three hypotenuses. This is the distance to the Treasure.

Student 3: Calculate numbers
Student 4: Raise hand with answer
18. Teacher will review the groups answer and work, if complete the students will receive
their groups final riddle.
19. Student 4 will read the clue/riddle and group will determine the answer.
20. Student 4 will record group answer on the Riddle Answer Sheet.
21. Student 4 or 5 will write the Riddle Answers on the board in the appropriate place.
22. Each riddle answer holds a letter to the class treasure and all groups have to work
together to earn their piece to the final treasure. The letter will be underlined in red on the
front board where the students write their answers.
