My dear youth parliamentarians for water

Another year has already drawn to an end. I wish you all had

fulfilling days this year and have kept most of your New Year’s

resolutions.

I have lived most of my life as a water expert, yet still, the APYPW

was another excitement and a great lesson to me. I truly wish that

your experience at the 3rd

Asia-Pacific Youth Parliament for Water

also was a meaningful event.

Your passion, enthusiasm, determination and solidarity were well

witnessed through your participation during the event. I truly

appreciate all your contributions and admiration toward the 3rd

APYPW.

Furthermore, I would like to congratulate the publication of the

2nd

volume of PIPES. This will be your second step toward water,

followed by your prior step of participation to the event. All of your participation will be well reflected in

the PIPES. This will awaken your remembrances and simultaneously broaden your mutual understandings.

Water is, and must be the most significant field for youth to study and to have professions in. Your

contribution to the sustainable environment is desperate and Korea Water Forum will be your best partner

in doing so.

The 7th

World Water Forum is just around the corner. With all the active and hard work in the preparatory

process, the Forum will cruise smoothly. Yet, continuous interests and support from youth will accelerate

the implementation of the solutions for the water challenges.

I will conclude my remarks by extending sincere gratitude to all the readers of the PIPES.

Thank you.

Deuk-koo Koh, Ph.D

Secretary General, Korea Water Forum

Greetings and a warm welcome to our second version of PIPES Journal!

PIPES Journal is a comprehensive reflection of the young professionals and students working in water

sector to ensure water security that is published by the Korea Water Forum. The main aim of this journal

is to create a platform for the Youths to come up with innovative and simple ideas, brainstorm and develop

creative thinking to address water crisis professionally through articles, scientific papers, photographs

and artworks.

Following the first version of PIPES, second version is finally here through great teamwork and

collaboration! For this year the Editorial Board represent diverse nationalities from Bangladesh, Korea and

Nepal. The contents for the PIPES journal has varied number of thematic areas and diverse background

covered under Water related issues from Climate Change to Water related technologies.

Furthermore, the process is meaningful since writers joined together for sharing precious knowledge and

dedicated thoughts. The young professionals who have submitted us contents represent six countries

(Korea, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Singapore). The board hopes this version of PIPES

shall work as a milestone towards raising awareness on importance of water related issues and work as a

ground for connecting innovative ideas among Asia- Pacific scholars. We believe this publication will also

strengthen the intergenerational bonding between the young professionals and the specialists towards

developing confidence and leadership.

We received an overwhelming response to our ‘Call for Submission’. Submissions have been selected

according to its content & articulations and edited by a diversified young professional editorial board who

worked sincerely to produce an interesting piece. We would like to acknowledge Korean Water Forum

(KWF) for providing us pristine opportunity and trusting us to work as an editors and encouraging young

professionals.

With warmest thanks,

Editorial Board

DeclarationWater is a vital resource for human health, prosperity and security. Nature has provided us with

an abundant source of water to thrive upon, but not to WASTE. Home to more than half of the

world’s population, Asia and the Pacific essentially represent diverse cultures, geographies,

climates, landscapes and hydrology. However, rapid economic growth and unsustainable water

management practices have increased the water stress in the region.

The Asia-Pacific Youth Parliament for Water (APYPW) believes that the youth can be the

driver for change in the on-going water crisis in the region. We are aware that the water issues

experienced in each country are bigger than what we can do as young people. But we assert

our right and our responsibility in assisting each of our governments and all non-government

organizations in their efforts to solve these problems

After thorough brainstorming and discussion sessions, the 3rd Asia-Pacific Youth Parliament

hereby commits to :

1. Initiate online petitions to demand more concern and responsibility regarding the sustainable

use of water resources, from the corporate irms and the governments in their operations.

2. Suggest academic institutions to integrate in their curriculum (e.g. thesis, feasibility studies)

possible solutions to water-related issues

3. Increase awareness of citizens about the existing water problems in our individual nations and

the region as a whole through creating and posting informative materials, blogs and articles on the

social media and new media.

4. Improve knowledge sharing by translating the declaration and the commission statements to

the national languages of the representative countries.

Page 9: PIPES_ver2_Small

3rd

Asia Pacific Youth Parliament for Water_ 07

5. Initiate in our individual households and youth organizations proper waste segregation, waste

reduction and some measures of eficient use of water such as rainwater harvesting, recycling of

domestic water and choosing to buy water eficient machines

6. Bridge the gap between the experts and the people in the grassroots to ensure effective use of

water in all levels of communities and in all kinds of industries

7. Recommend to governments to be more inclusive towards the youth sector in the whole

process of identifying water issues and in formulating solutions to solve them so that the young

generation will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to become future water

leaders in the society.

8. Utilize APYPW to reinforce interactions between different youth organizations and various

networks. Parliamentarians will provide their services to enlighten the youth’s role in solving

water related issues and the APYPW.

The 3rd Asia Pacific Youth Parliament for Water firmly endorses the idea of incorporating

sustainability in all the water - related developments and believes that we should not jeopardize

the quality of life of the future generations as we try to achieve prosperity. The parliament trusts

in the ability of the youth to achieve all these goals and hopes that the commitments made by the

parliamentarians will be mate rialized and contribute in the improvement of the on - going water

crisis situation in the Asia Paciic region.

This declaration was adopted at the plenary session of the 3rd Asia Pacific Youth Parliament for Water

(APYPW) held from 9th to 12th of July 2014 in Kyungpook National University Sangju Campus and the

National Assembly Memorial Hall in Republic of Korea.
