1:1 TAPE DRAWINGYou will be working in public. It is important that you work in a respectful manner and that the work you do is carefully crafted. All of your work will be seen by everyone.
Each student pair will make their drawings on walls specified by faculty and TAs. Each
drawing will be given a 5 foot long wall area on which to make their drawing. Most of the
stairs are longer than this dimension. If the run of the stair exceeds five feet in length, the
drawing should include up to 5 risers or up to the first stair landing, whichever comes first.
In order to make the drawings students will first use chalk or light pencil marks to measure
and outline the section of their stair. The drawing will be made from the careful cutting and
rigorous application of tape. The type of tape will define the aspects of the drawing that are
important to the properties of the stair and its description as a section drawing.
Each drawing should be an accurate description of the stair geometry and degree of
inclination. The major graphic distinction to make in the projection of a section drawing
is the difference between elements that are being CUT and elements that are seen in
ELEVATION beyond.

TYPES OF TAPECUT (Section): Blue Tape
Measure and approximate the dimensions of the stairs as best as you can. Each step is made
up of a riser (vertical) and a thread (horizontal). Pay close attention to depth, thickness, and
geometry. Geometry of cut steps should reflect the materiality of the stair (solid, sheet, etc).
NON-CUT (Elevation): Green Tape
Measure and approximate the dimensions of the railing(s), steps, or structure that can be
seen beyond the cut.

YOU ARE ONLY USING PAINTERS-TAPE. TAKE EXTRA CARE NOT TO DAMAGE THE WALL PAINT OR THE SURFACE OF THE WALLS.
