Pinterest and the Search For A Missing Child

• Pinterest is best known as a scrapbooking tool. • However, Pinterest can be a useful resource in the search for a

missing child:

– It’s Visual Pinterest is a visual medium, ideal for engaging visitors emotionally

– Allows Linking Pinterest allows users to link images to specific webpages, making it a great “pointer” to

more detailed information

Getting Started

Go to Pinterest.com to create an account

Create Your Account

• You can use your Facebook or Twitter account

• But we recommend creating a new account with the special email address you created

• Make account name focused on search

• Use search-specific email address

• Use your name• Use picture of missing

child for profile

Create Your Account

• Next, Pinterest will ask you to select some “starter images”• Don’t worry, you can delete or edit these later• You will also see an alert about a confirmation email

to verify your new account – watch for this

Go to Settings to complete your profile

Invite profile viewers to the search website/Facebook page for more info

Pinning Basics

Clicking “Add+” at the top of the page will display this box:• Add a Pin lets you share an image from a webpage

(yours or someone else’s)• Upload lets you share an image

(you can link the image to a webpage)

Adding a Board

• You do not have to create a board for the search-focused account, but it might be useful:

• One board for pictures of the child,

• another for family activities

• Without boards, all pins will appear in a group for the accountYou can authorize

others to add pins

Adding a Pin

• After you enter or paste the page address, click Find images

• You can choose a board the Pin will go in and add a description*

Upload a Pin

• Most pins will be this type• Click choose file to find

the image on your computer

• You can choose a board the Pin will go in and add a description*

Edit a Pin

• After adding or uploading a pin, you can Edit the information

• With an uploaded pin, this is where you can add a link to a webpage with more info

“Repinning:” Spread the Word

• Other Pinterest users can repin your image to their boards

• The image will still be linked to the URL you set

• Ask friends and families who use Pinterest to repin to start spreading the word!

Advanced Tips: Hashtags

• Hashtags are a way for Pinterest users to find related images from different users

• You can add them to image descriptions

• Remind people to click on the image for more info

• Pinterest allows users to link images to webpages• You can also include the same or different hyperlink in

description• URL in description will appear cut off but still works
