“Well, this’ll show Santa,” Pinky mumbled as the Valley Transit bus pulled away. She had saved all her elf money for a ticket to Harlingen, hoping the trip would get her away from the frustra-tions at the North Pole as Christmas was drawing near. She just needed an escape.

Pinky was sad. She slumped in her seat, thinking about the things that she couldn’t do. She was the tiniest elf, after all. All the other elves were big enough to help Santa with his big jobs — loading the sleigh with packages, using heavy power tools to make toys, or even fixing Mrs. Claus’ rocking chair.

When the bus slowed down, Pinky asked the driver to take her to the Iwo Jima Monument and Museum. At the museum, Col. Glenn Hill told her about the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. “This statue presents honor, courage and com-mitment,” he said. “We teach those values to the Marine Military Acad-emy cadets.”

After visiting the museum, she started walking and admir-ing all the cute houses listed by Richard Guerrero, Realtor® when she suddenly saw some-thing that caught her attention: smoke pouring from the roof of a two-story house.

All alone in a new place, Pinky didn’t know what to do. She saw a light on in the second-story window, noticing flames starting to emerge from the roof. She decided in an instant to scurry up the drainpipe and peek inside, seeing a young girl laying asleep in her bed. “Wake up! Wake up! There’s a fire!” Pinky shouted, pounding on the window pane with all the strength her little elf body could muster. “Call 9-1-1 we need the Harlingen Fire De-partment and the Harlingen Police Department!”

Pinky’s noise drew the attention of the girl’s parents, who rushed into the bed-room, shocked to see a tiny elf yelling at their window. They immediately smelled the smoke and carried their daughter down to safety, escaping the burning house.

The Harlingen Fire Department rushed to the scene and doused the flames, glad to see the family had made it out unharmed. Interim Chief Stephen Scot Mayer and all the Officers of the Harlingen Police Department thanked Pinky for helping educate our community about dialing 9-1-1 in order to as-sist someone who is very sick or badly hurt, report when you are lost, report a fire, report an accident or report a crime. When calling 9-1-1, remember to give the address where the emergency is happen-ing, wait to answer any questions and do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you it’s okay.

The next day, Pinky was a hero. Her story made front page news in the Valley Morning Star and online at valleystar.com. Everybody in the Rio Grande Valley was talking about her bravery. She received a medal from Mayor Chris Boswell for her courage and service to the community. Rotary Club of Harlingen members proudly honored Pinky at our Friday lunch meeting and awarded her a distin-guished ‘Service above Self’ coin,” Club President Tre Pea-cock said.

That’s not all. When word got around about Pinky’s heroism, the community united in celebrating her character.

“We would love to have Pinky join us at Su Clinica and share her joy of reading with our patients,” Su Clinica CEO Dr. Elena Marin said.

“We welcome Pinky to give tours at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, especially with our Christmas Tree Exhibit,” museum co-ordinator Stephanie Miller said.

Pinky visited the Harlingen Public Library, received her library card, and immediately checked out some books,” Director Ruben Rendon said.

Pinky thought about it. Staying in Harlingen sounded so ap-pealing, but she also knew her calling in life was to be an elf. As she bought her Valley Transit bus ticket back to the North Pole, she realized she’d learned an important lesson that would serve her well at Santa’s workshop: It’s the size of your heart that mat-ters more than anything.

Upon returning to the North Pole, Santa was already waiting for her. “I’ve got a job for you, Pinky,” he said, holding up a list of the good girls and boys who deserved extra toys this year. “I need you to check and double-check this list. It’s a big job, but I think you can handle it.”

Now thanks to Pinky — and the lessons she learned in Harlin-gen— all the Christmas toys will arrive on schedule this year.
