-HA LEHINWII'H'CAREBOYFRIENDS areprobably the weirdestthing ever invented! One minute they'reholding your bandand teHing you thatyou're fabulous. Thenext time you see 'em,they're . muckingabout with someone'sscooter and don'tseem to know you

exist! So what do youdo with them? Brigldtells us here:

One of my sister's, firstdates used to take her outevery Saturday, regular asclockwork - and ignore herfor the rest of the week! When she actually went outwith somebody else on theWednesday - just to teachPete a bit of a lesson - herang up, all hurt, and askedwhy she was two-timing him.Sally was really takenaback, so she stutteredsomething about not thinkinghe cared what she did - andthe world blew up!Pete delivered. this longlecture about needing timewith his mates, having a lotof studying to get through, helping his Mum (his Dad'ddied a few years back) and, loads of other things. Sowhen they next met, SaUyjust sat down and talked tohim., And maybe that's one ofthe ways you can starthandling a boyfriend. Treat'em as human beings, withthe same 'kind of problems asus,But if YOU want to get yourown was with your feUa,how'd you go about it?Well,.You don't start by i n -sisting - that's for certain. And don't be fooled intethinking that floods of tearsdo much either. That's an oldwives' tale and turns guys offquicker than anything else Iknow - 'cos It actuallyembarrasses them. Anyway, you may need the tears forsomething really serious Iat-er onlSo what do you do?You want to go to a pop

concert. He wants to go to anevening football match. Andneither of you Look likebudging. So try what Idid with afella once ..Look all mournful, hold hishand, really tight, then givehim a little smile and mur-mur, "Of course we'll go tothe match. It was just thatBill and Ian are taking theirgirlfriends to the concert. And you know what they'relike. They keep saying hownobody but them ever spendsmoney, and it makes me somad, Imean you really take alot of trouble over our dates, don't you?"Chances are, he'll knowwhen he's beat and give inthen and there, 'cos hedoesn't want .any of his matescalling him an or meanie! But What about havingmore than one boyfriend?Fine, if you can handle it.Boys who arefriends, thatis fellas you have coffee anda few laughs with, are greatpeople to know. They cansometimes be more use in anemergency thana gidfriend,'cos they don't panic in quite'the same way.If you'v.e got a load of boy-friends, try and make surethey all knpw where theystand. Don't hold hands withone and give him a specialsmile if you just want him asa friend. Guys- are reallypretty gullible, and they cantake that kind of thing tomean you want to turn theminto something special. .If you ever get into tilesituation Igot into, where I

had o:Qeboy friend andboyfriend (follow me?)the first one got very jeaof the. second one, you've got a tricky, butuncommon. situation. The only thing youreally do about it, if you wto avoid a punch-up betwthe felias, is take Boy 1aand explain, as nicely assible thatmucbasyou like.Boy 2 is something speYou can pretty thathit, of course, by sasomething along the line"I'm sorry, Dave. I diwant it Jo happen. ImeI've known you both forand I've never really thou

O f Steve that way. But atdance last week, something happened, know what it's like? Wesort of looked at each o-and that was it, I don'tyou to be hurt, honestly.thought I'd better expAnd we ca n alwaysfriend$ can't we?"If you deliver thatspeech properly, withthe right amount of treinglip and hand clenchingyou should do the trick.Boyfriends reallystrange, 'cos just whenthink' you've got 'emweighed up and canwith. all their peculiar ha- they go and do somethcompletely unexpected.remember it's the annisary of the' da y you met!And that's the pointwhich the only thing youdo is give up trying toderstand them and acthem for what th.ey are!

FOR a long time I thoughtPalmists were people whosold palm trees, Ioften won-dered why they had suchsmall shops for such largeobjects. It was my grannywho finally explained to methat they were people whocould read the future in thepalm of your hand, She's agreat believer in that sort ofthing, my granny. Once shesaw the shape of a bolt oflightning in the tealeaves atthe bottom of her cup andwas so convinced it meantour house was going to bestruck by Iightntng, that thenext stormy night she movedout into a tent in the garden.Well, the house didn't getstruck by lightning but thetent blew away around mid-night and granny got soakedin her nightdress and ended

up with a heavy chill. Afterthat my mother started us~ngtea bags,Anyway, it seems that Pal-mistry was considered ahighly respectable form offortune telling in the past.Even old Aristotle rated itand- according to some of myteachers he was no fool. TheAncient Egyptians practisedPalmistry, not to-mennon theChinese, Indians and Per-sians. (Allt"ight, 1 won'tmention the Chinese, Indiansand Persiansl)If it was good enough forAristotle, then it was. good

enough for me, Which ex-plains what I was doing in thecurtained booth of MadameClara last week.Madame Clara didn't lookvery mystical, But she knewher stuff. After gazing at my handsfor a while she announcedthat long fingers indicatedthe artistic type."Pity yours are 'short andstubby," she added, "but itdoesn't mean you're stupid.Well, not necessarily.According to the ratherpathetic line of the heartyou're selfish and have an

uncertain disposition.""Thanks a lot" I saidthere anything-there 'thcomplimentary?""Nota lot Thi.s line sthat. you may be veryand find great h"appiness.as the line was made wball-point pen, it docount, No, the future, pretty bleak for you. Iruin, misery and dpotntment But nevermiyou won't have to werrymuch.""Why not?" Taskedcheeringup a bit."Your' Line of Lifeshort I doubt if you'lllong enough for mmisery or disappointment.Looking back nowthink it might 'havebetter if I'd taken m y gloff!

And when I readit, I nearly flipped out! 1 justcouldn't get over the fact thatyou were going to print aspecial booklet just about me!Well - you know, lots ofmags have done big storiesand articles about me and mybrothers - but a booklet!Honest, 1couldn't believe it!I must tell you what happen-ed that day ...Iwas sitting by our pool atthe time, soaking up the sunand kinda' dreaming away, thinking about the next showwe were, going to do. Jer-maine, Jackie and Marlonwere fooling around in thewater, racing from one end toanother and not stopping tillone of them said, "Enough!"strolling out with a trayful oflemonade and biscuits - andlying right on top of one ofthe glasses was - you'veguessed it! - your letter! Then, 1 was the one shout-

ing, "Enough! Enough!" as Ileaped up and dashed over tothe pool, waving the letter inmy hand. I had to screamreal loud 'cause they weremalting so much noise andMama was chasing after meshouting, "What is it? Let mesee that letter!"At that point, my brothersrealised something was upand came scurrying out ofthe pool, all worried andfrazzled. Then - there wasthis horrible, absolute sil-ence, everyone staringanxiously at me,Suddenly, all the excite-ment 1 felt just vanished,'and, well, to be honest, Ifeltembarrassed. Here was 1making this big fuss overmei t sort of handed 'the let-ter around and slunk off backto my beach chair, wishing 1was an ostrich so 1could burymy head in some sand. Then - I heard laughterand Ifelt as big as a speck ofdust But Ilooked up - andto my surprise - J ermaineshouted, "Great! sicIAG CAL MICHAELmind doing on his own is T factsriting successful music. "Iwork on writing whenever Ican," he said serjously. "Ireally do. It's hard, you know."So far, we haven't record-ed anything I've written, butI'm saving them all. Jer-maine's been writing songs, too. Maybe some day we'llrecord them. That reallywould be groovy."

    iC IDoing Their Thing

Michael believes that eve-rything that happens has areason - a logical one. Thatis, hard work and long re-hearsals lead to good per-formances and gold records."And the. stuff we doonstage," he said, "we learn-ed by just watching otherperformers doing their thing. That's all it takes - if youwatch real good!"My father had us studydifferent acts and pointed outwhat was good in them."Even today, the J-5 gatherround the telly when a goodgroup is performing. "It'svery importan t," Michaelsaid. "See, it's not copying. That's not the point. You'vejust got to keep up with all ofthe new steps and sounds. It'sall part of keeping your ownact together."We know a lot of groupswatch us - and we're veryhappy they do! The musicworld! There's nothing like it- anywhere!"

We all agree that there is a kind of magic about Mich- especially when he's performing. If you're feelidown or sad or just plain "out of it", our Michael haway of making that feeling disappear, simply by Sing- and in its place comes happiness and a glad-toalive sensation. Honest"Honesty is first on my list. That's the mos t importantquality in the world to me.Mos t of the girls Iknow are sosilly and full of tricks, They tryeverything to get us guys t onotice them when, really, ifthey didn't try so hard, we guyswouldn't run the other way!Like one girl Iknow used toca ll m e up, and when I'd say"Hello," she'd giggle, then hangup" Iknew all along who shewas,"Don't get me wrong. I likesome girls who giggle - it'skind of sweet - but not thehysterical type! I'd much rath-er have a grrl walk straight upto me and say: "Y'know, Ilikeyou!"

"I like to talk things overwith a girl, It's no good keepingthings to yourself, Then thesethoughts and feelings just buildup and suddenly, there's a bigemotional explosion. Then youfeel r.eal bad afterwards, It'sbetter just to say things whenyou think of them. I don't thinkyou can have a good relation-Ship when you're hidingsomething. "

Adaptable"1 enjoy other people, andas I've said before, I'malways running .aroundsomewhere! So my girl wouldhave to love people - allkinds of people - and wouldliks going to big parties andwhere everyone's laughingand happy. "On the other hand, some-times I like to just sit in frontof a roaring fire and toastmarshmallows - a quietkind of evening. And withthe right girl sitting therewith me - well, what morecan I say? I especially likethis kind of date after we'vebeen on tour or had a reallylong recording session."~y girl should like bothkinds of dates."

Good Personality"Sure, I like pretty girls. But the thing that's mostimportant to me is what'sbehind the prettiness. I

much prefer a girl who'sthoughtful and sweet andkind to one who's got alllooks and nothing else,"I'm really a freak oncomics and cartoons, and Ilove sketching and makingup different characters, Iknow this is unusual, so Iwouldn't expect my girl tobe really gooney over allthis stuff - but I surewould like her to under-stand T Q Y liking for it. It's apart of me."

The NonJealous Ty"My girl better notpossessive! Let's face itmy brothers and I do getawful lot of fan mail, whwe dearly love to readanswer when we can. Ausually, at a performance

some fans really show thfeelings for us - soscream out, 'I love y'Be mine!' And, of' couwe love this too, Wwouldn't! So my girl wohave to trust me and hconfidence in me and jknow that I'm fa.ithfulher."Wow, I couldn't stahaving to explain or maexcuses all the time. Andshe were understanding, that would make me hpiest of all."Music Lover

"You just have to knthat music is the mimportant thing in my lifeat least, at the moment, iAfter all, I've been aformer now for eight-andhalf years, I'd like to do fisomeday, too. So mywould have to cope withworking life and dig the skind of music I do, 'causehome, Ihave the hi-fi gofull blast all the time!"I Iike to play all kinasinstruments - includinthe drums! And sometimeI'll do on-the-spot perforances-like when I'dbe walking down the strwith my girl, I mightdenly burst out withCan't Stop Loving YoRay Charles style. OH, GILBERT! The moment wemet you - we loved you, andthe moment you met us .you were shy! Our friend G il-bert really -is a very reservedsort of guy.

"I don't lead much of a sociallile," he told Jon, "mainly be-cause I am shy and because Idon't drink or drive. Occasion-ally, though. I go to dinner, andI certainly like taklnq girls out!"

Most of Gilbert's life is takenup with the music scene, whichhe really enjoys. In fact, he onlyhas one dislike ..and that'sshaving! .'It really irritates me,"he told us in an exclusive Pinkinterview. "I just can't standhaving to pull a blade acrossmy face first thing in thernorninql " The problem ismade werse because Gilbertcan't grow a beard! Every timehe tries, his face comes out inspots ... and we couldn't havea spotty Gilbert, could well

    Gilbert, real name Raymond

O'Sullivan, was born on De-cember 1, 1946, in Waterford,Southern Ireland. He has beenquite a character even in hispre-chart days, as his old friendand flat-mate. Ken White, secretly told us!

"We used 10 go to art collegetogether, and when we gothome, Gilbert would hidie him-self in the corner and composetunes on his piano. I couldn'tunderstand once why he keptwanting to collect old cardboardegg cartons, until one day hestacked them all round hispiano. Thev made a perfectsound box!"

Gilbert first performed in aschool dance, when he playedthe drums in a group called"The Prefects". And at ArtSchool he used to be quite acomic always clawingaround and doodling pop stars:But whatever he was doing, music came first. even thouqnGilbert was no overnight sue-

"It took many years ci tperseverance to get in-

to the music world."he said, with a littlesigh. "I used to sendtapes of..my work to

record companies, but that didn't seemto work, even when

    went in my 192:0's

type school-boy clorhesl.,In the end I decided th ebest thi ng 10 do Wall Id be tofind a manager, I did that, and, well, here I am!"Gordo", Mills, the managerwho changed Gilbert's wholelife-style, was really impressedwith Gilbert',s ideas 10r clothing.'"My greatest influence therewas Charlie Chaplin," said ourMr Sullivan. "It was all a bit ofa laugh really. Girls used towrite to me saying how muchthey liked my hairy knees! Butall that weird clothing wasn'tjust a publicity stunt - it reallywas the real me!"- Let alone Gilbert'S clothingand fantastic looks, how doeshe possibly think Lip so manyfantast ic hits?'"I suppose I get my ideashom everyday life. but nothingrea, lly in particular. When I do

write, I literally lock myselaway in a room for practicallydays on end:'

Of course, sometimes Gilberdoes worry that he might, juspossibly, run out of ideas ... Buif Iever do," he assured me. "iwon't be for a very long time."

But what if Gilbert hadn'tbeen so successful?

..then righi now I'd probably be sitting in some studioin London as a commercialartist, designing Christmascards, or whatever! I'm glaI'm not. but even now I stilhave an interest in art."

What does he think abougetting married?

"The idea really appeals tm~:' he said, taking a biggerpuff from his cigar and showingoff just one of his past valentinecards - measuring about threefeet by four! "I really would likto get married someday, although I haven't the faintestidea when!"

Meanwhile, Gilbert is preparing for his summer lour of theStales. and trying hard to forgetthat he has to shave tomorrowmorning!

Remember too, that Lil-letsis the tampon you insert yourself, guiding it gently into position in aperfectly natural way.
