Gary McGilvray Principal:
Principal’s Message Well, it is hard to believe that we only have 3 months left in the school year. We had an exciting month of March and really focused on developing our school spirit. Before March Break, we had a fun-filled week which we called “March Madness”. Be sure to look for photos later in the newsletter to see what that was all about. We also had a “magical” assembly on the Friday before the break where we learned about bullying and how to stop it and how to stand up to bullies to make bullying disappear forever. During that week, we introduced our school wide Houseleague program to our students. All Pineway students and staff are now on one of six teams: Air (White), Earth (Green), Fire (Red), Moon (Black), Sun (Yellow), or Water (Blue). We have six balanced teams with students from JK – grade 5 on each team. We started that week and will continue our team building exercises for the rest of the year. Team photos follow on the last page. If you are not already, why not follow us on Twitter to see a little more of what we do @PinewayPS If you are available to volunteer at the school and wondering how you might be able to assist, we would love to hear from you.
Mr. Gary McGilvray-
Notice of Vision Clinic
Vision screening services are being offered to
children within our school community by the
Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS),
the independent, registered charitable
organization dedicated to supporting Toronto
District School Board's children and helping
remove barriers to their education.
The vision clinics are conducted by international
medical graduates. Following the clinic, a note will
be sent home with your child indicating the results
of the screening tests. If your child is referred for
further assessment with an optometrist, a
permission form for the school-based optometry
clinic will be sent home for you to fill in, sign and
return. Students who need glasses will receive
them free of cost.
The vision clinic is scheduled on Monday, April 16
at our school.
If you do not want your child to participate in the
free vision screening, please let us know by
either sending a note in the agenda or by calling
the office.
If you have any
questions, please
contact the
school.

Our Trip to Mono Cliffs
From Monday, February 26-28, 2018 our grade
4/5 class went to Mono Cliffs Outdoor Education
Centre in Orangeville. The activities were
educational as well as really fun and the food was
delicious!
On the afternoon of the first day, we played many
Co-operative and Team Building games which
taught us to work together and communicate. On
the first night, we played a game called
Orienteering. We worked in pairs, with Night
goggles which light like headbands to help us
search for answers. We had to follow instructions,
and use a map in the DARK! You have to find
letters around the buildings of Mono Cliffs. It was
super fun!
On the second evening, Mr. McGilvray joined us
for dinner in the dining room and stayed for the
evening program which included Campfire songs,
roasting
marshmallows, and
games in the dorm
recreation room.
Superintendent: Ms. Elizabeth Addo Trustee: Mr. Alexander Brown
While at Mono Cliffs, we went on an ecological
hike in the forest, learned all about the process of
making Maple Syrup and studied about The First
Nations and European Settlers and Fur Trade. At
the sugar shack, we practised using a saw to cut
logs. We tapped trees, and tasted the sap, it
tasted like water with a little sweetness. We
needed 40 buckets of sap to make 1 bucket of
Maple Syrup so that is hard work! We also tasted
real maple syrup. It was exquisite! We had an
amazing time!
Special thanks to Mrs. Young and to Mr.
Alexopoulos who took away from their own family
time so we could all enjoy this trip with our
Pineway family.
All the activities were so fun but tiring! I wish I
could go back to Mono Cliffs again!

International Day of Pink
On April 11 we celebrate
The International Day of Pink … day of action, born
when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova
Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to
school. His fellow students decided to stand up to
bullying; and hundreds of students came to school
wearing pink to show support for diversity and
stopping discrimination and bullying.
Our students and staff will be wearing pink in
support of diversity, and will be participating in
events and activities that will engage our
community to challenge gender stereotypes.
The International Day of Pink is more than just a
symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity -
it's also a commitment to being open minded, to
being understanding of differences and to learning
to respect each other.
Ball Hockey
For the very first season of ball hockey in the
TDSB, Pineway entered a team in the area
tournament. Pineway hosted the tournament. Our
first game was against Shaughnessy Public
School. It was a fun game but unfortunately we
lost. The next game was against Rene Gordon,
Superintendent: Ms. Elizabeth Addo Trustee: Mr. Alexander Brown
they got the win. We were officially 0-2 but we
got to face the same two schools again. Our third
game was against Shaughnessy again and we got
our first win! Yay!
To secure a spot for the playoffs we either had to
win our last game or if we lose then it depends all
on the next game. If Rene Gordon beat
Shaughnessy, we were going to the playoffs. If
Shaughnessy wins, then Rene Gordon go to the
playoffs and we are eliminated. During our break
while Shaughnessy and Rene Gordon were playing
each other we ate lunch, after we got great
news………… WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!! FOR
THE FIRST TIME IN 6 YEARS!!!! Everybody was so
excited.
A few days later it was
time for the playoffs, we
went to Highland Middle
School for the playoffs.
The deal was if we won
the first we would be
guaranteed a banner. If
we lost then no banner. Unfortunately we lost the
game and we got no banner but it was still fun.
We still appreciate having the opportunity to
improve our skills and practice times with Mr.
Alexopoulos. The team players were: Brunella,
Sarah, Luther, Aniesa, Tony, Frederick, Simpson,
Tahle, Kymanie, Devonte, Felix, and Tristan,

Our Basketball Tournament
Our grade 4/5 boys
participated in the Area
Basketball tournament
on February 13th, 2018. Three schools attended
the tournament including Pineway. We won the
first game against Arbor Glen! Hourray!
Unfortunately, we lost our second game
competing with Rene Gordon. The score for the
winning game against Arbour Glen was 47 to 17.
We lost 57 to 41 in the second game but the good
thing was that we had lots of fun.
The Pineway Panther Team included the following
players: Nathaniel, Tahle, Luther, Aryan,
Kymanie, Tony, Devonte, Tristan, Felix, Simpson,
and Freddy.
Thanks to Ms. Barron who coached our Pineway
team.

Recognition Assembly During the afternoon of Thursday, March 29,
2018, we had an amazing assembly to
acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our
students and staff throughout this past month and
to welcome April. Honesty was our Character Trait
Superintendent: Ms. Elizabeth Addo Trustee: Mr. Alexander Brown
focus for March and the students did a fantastic
job of demonstrating this trait throughout the
month. Congratulations to our award recipients
for March:
Ms. Hanaalla’s grade 2/3 class did a fabulous job
at hosting us for this assembly. Rashawn and
Keziah were our MCs and the class performed a
skit of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, they produced a
number of engaging mini-movies about the
Honesty Police and then they sang a song for us.
Mrs. Young’s grade 4/5 class performed a lovely
musical number for us using their recorders,
percussion and singing.
Mrs. Barron’s grade 2/3 class led us in an engaging
presentation on Autism. Each student presented
some information about themselves and some
truth about what autism is and then we all
watched a very engaging video from YouTube
called:
Amazing Things Happen.
Click right back there on the title if you would like
to watch it - you will be glad you did!
Pineway is a great school, filled with wonderfully talented students and dedicated educators!!
