2 The PineNeedler | July 2014
From the Clubhouse by Danny Souza, General Manager
The Cart Path project continues to move forward in a positive direction. The sub base is nearly 100% complete and new asphalt has been delivered and laid on the property. This process will continue for several weeks until all eighteen holes are finished. The curbing and clean up will follow.
The club is available for Golf Outings, Pool Parties, Luncheons, Business Meetings, Breakfasts, Dinners, Wedding Receptions, Bridal and Baby Showers, Retirement Dinners, Birthday and Anniversary Celebra-tions or any private event that you would like to have. The club also does off site catering when asked. Please keep us in mind when planning your next event. If you are interested in planning a December Holi-day Party now is the time to call and book your event. Members can also sponsor an event so if you have a friend, neighbor or co worker who would like to have an event at Pine Lake please refer them to me.
Our current Membership promotion has no initiation fees and has reduced monthly dues will be ending on July 31st. The Membership Committee and Board of Directors is currently working on a new program that we will roll out in the next two weeks. Please spread the news to anyone interested in Membership so they can take advantage of this outstanding value.
I have enclosed for your information a financial update for the clubs first quarter fiscal year ending 2015. If you have any questions please feel free to call, 704-241-8324.
See you at the club!
Danny

Dear Pine Lake Members,
It is exciting to see the activity levels at the club remain strong through the summer months. Mother Nature has been kind as of late allowing the membership to enjoy club activities. Please continue to stay active by inviting guests to the club for golf, tennis, swimming or dining. Each time you invite a guest out it is a potential new member.
The new playground has been installed and is completed for all the kids to enjoy. This capital project is another club improvement that your $30 per month fee is being used for. I appreciate the Board of Directors decision to approve this much needed upgrade. Parents are asked to supervise their children at the playground as safety is first and foremost.

Golf Newsby Luke Smith, Head Golf Professional
The Golf Season is in full swing and the golf course is busy. In an effort to help our members enjoy their time at the club and in particular on the golf course, please be reminded of the following:
• Call ahead or book on-line to secure your starting time, all times booked time will receive priority when teeing off
• Fill in ALL players names at least a full 24 hours be-fore your starting time, as TBD’s will fall off the tee sheet 24 hours prior to your scheduled time
• All players must sign in at the Golf Shop prior to play, during regular golf shop hours
• Plan on being on the 1st tee box at least 5 minutes prior to teeing off, this way all play will start on time, which in turn should help with good spacing on the golf course and a pleasant pace of play
• Make your guests are aware of our cart rules and kindly remind them when they forget to abide by them, this will help avoid any embarrassment on their part
• Fill all divots using the sand bottles on the golf cart
• Rake any bunkers that you have visited throughout the round and leave rakes outside of the bunker
• Repair your pitch mark and one other on each green that you walk on to, this will help keep our golf course in pristine condition
• Do not sit down at the turn to eat if you are plan-ning on playing the back nine. Please order and take your food with you to eat as you play
• Make every effort to keep up with the group in front and not just in front of the group behind
• Remember that the same attire that is required on the Golf Course, is also required on all of our practice areas (range, putting green & chipping green)
Thank you in advance for helping our staff, make your time at the club more enjoyable!
Course Report by Richard McDanel, Certified Golf Course Superintendent
Do you realize we actually use strategy in course set-up? Really, we just don’t position those pins on the greens to torture you! The number one factor in determining hole loca-tion is the survival of the turf over time. In order to do this, varying positioning throughout the week is critical. Using the same location too often can result in thinning of the putting surface causing inconsistent ball roll. Often times, other courses use a front, middle and back system which makes it easier for the golfer and the golf course maintenance supervisor. Our greens do not allow this sys-tem to work, due to their lack of puttable square footage. Many of our greens have a center which is sloped, or if not, allow for only one usable location. The archi-tectural design allows the surrounding mounds to carry onto the putting surface, rendering this space undesirable when positioning a hole. This design was most likely used to create more challenging putting, to counter the lack of total yardage of the course. It makes our course unique and seems to keep golfers coming back for more! We do our best to move the locations to ensure turf survival while creating a course that is a challenge but fair. I know some may not always agree, but we do not take out
our frustrations when considering hole locations. Only three maintenance staff members at PLCC are allowed to position holes. Many courses allow two employees to locate holes on the same day due to their large greens with grade changes in the 2% - 3% range. We often get requests for easy pin placements for a tournament. If this is done, it then leaves the days that follow with tougher hole locations. A balance of hole locations is the best strategy to please all groups using our course. This balance also allows us to achieve our goal of producing a healthy turfgrass plant, which in turn, leaves the golfer with a quality putting surface.

18 Holer NewsThe highlight for the month of une was our Annual Member/Guest Tournament on June 18th. We were de-lighted to have ten 4-person teams for the 2 best ball event. This year the tournament was co-chaired by Connie Sisstare and Jan Aldridge. They did an outstanding job in planning a fun day with great prizes, complete with a cocktail party the evening before hosted by Connie.

Tennis Tip by Robert Stephens, USPTA Pro1, Head Tennis Professional
Volley Instruction
The volley should be a simple shot and by playing the volley out in front of your body you usually avoid a big swing and the chance for errors. Plus it will be easier to watch the ball at contact because it’s in front of you. Here are some other things to keep in mind.
· EXTEND YOUR ARMS IN THE READY POSITION This will help shorten your backswing when you turn
to make a volley
· INTERCEPT THE PATH OF THE BALL Again this will help you make contact out in front
· MOVE YOUR FEET Good footwork will allow you to volley consistently
by often making contact in the same position.
