“He really left, and He is really coming back.”

“As he blessed them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.”

Luke 24:51

One of the neat things I discovered when looking into theories about different dimensions and parallel universes was that the Ascension of Christ made more sense to me.

As a kid, I always wondered about this. Did Jesus have a protective “bubble of light” around him once he left the atmosphere; space travel is notorious for being very cold and lacking oxygen. After all, though he is God, Jesus is also man, and that means somehow his body was protected going to “Heaven,” or the abode of the Almighty.

Of course we are already talking about flight without any vehicle, so let’s not forget that question of “how,” as well.

But when I started to read about theories of different dimensions in time and space, and parallel universes--- the stuff of “science fiction” that more scientists posit could be “scientific truth”---when I started looking into it, the Ascension of Jesus made a lot more sense. Like the angels of the Bible, one moment he was here, and the next he was gone. The fact that a cloud concealed his exit does not take away from that fact.

God makes sense. Things in his Word make sense. Jesus left so that we could have the Holy Spirit, so that he could be present within all of us, in a sense, because when the Holy Spirit indwells within us, that is what is happening. Christ lives within us. And yet, the fact that he ascended is very important because it means that he is out there, somewhere, a 1st century Jewish Man, who bears the scars of the Cross on his body, interceding for us, physically present in a very real place, whether it is in this universe or a “parallel” one. The ancient Celts believed in “thin places” in this world, places where the veil that separates us from the supernatural is very thin, granting us a glimpse to the other side.

How wonderful to think that maybe, just maybe, Jesus’ throne, and his very abode in fact, are closer than we might think.

Perhaps his return in the clouds is closer than we might think as well.

Blessings in Christ!

Edward
