Dear Friends,

The year 2009 was challenging for many nonprofit organizations in Minnesota and around the country, including Pillsbury United Communities. The word

“recession” and the fear of decreased financial support was a reality for many of us. Rather than allowing this fear to paralyze us, Pillsbury United Communities in

2009 chose to use it as a mobilizing force. We relied on our history of resilience and adaptability in this community, as well as our legacy of working in partnership

with community members and other stakeholders to transform our operating model to better achieve our mission of creating choice, change and connection for

people from all walks of life. When we look to the future, we always remember our past.

Take a look at the beautiful skyline of Downtown Minneapolis and you’ll see very few buildings as old as Pillsbury United Communities. In fact, of Minneapolis’

ten tallest buildings, only one was built prior to 1930. The Foshay Tower, the tallest building in Minneapolis from 1929-1973, opened in 1929, just a few months

before the October stock market crash and impending Great Depression. To give you some perspective on the history of PUC, when the Foshay Tower opened,

Pillsbury House (still one of our four neighborhood centers today) had already served our community for 32 years; and just as the Foshay Tower has remained a

resilient fixture in the Minneapolis skyline, Pillsbury United Communities has remained a resilient leader of the Minneapolis nonprofit community.

In its 113 year history, Pillsbury United Communities has weathered the storm of the Great Depression, the Oil Crisis of the 1970’s, 1987’s “Black Monday”, and the

September 11th Attack. Through each trial and tribulation we faced, we chose to innovate and create programs that better served the needs of our communities.

The same can be said for 2009. The number of participants we served increased by 17%, and though we operated in 2009 with fewer resources, our staff

accomplished more. They reached out to volunteers, increasing the number of volunteers at PUC by 24% and increasing the number of volunteer hours by 113%.

Our staff knew they needed more hands to complete the important work they do, and they found a creative and proactive way to make it happen.

If we can convey one message about Pillsbury United Communities in our 2009 Annual Report, let it be one of resiliency. Each time you drive by the Foshay

Tower, think of its resiliency in this community -- then think about Pillsbury United Communities and how we, like the Foshay Tower, have remained steadfast

through trials and triumphs to remain a pillar in Minneapolis.

volunteers

Pillsbury United Communities believes fervently in volunterrism as a

catalyst to creating choice, change and connection in our

communities - one person at a time. The work we do is vast and

wide. With over 37,000 participants entering our doors each year,

four neighborhood centers, three satellite locations and a

professional live theatre, we simply could not complete the breadth

or depth of work we do without a large number of volunteers.

In 2009, PUC hosted nearly five times as many volunteers as we

have staff. These individuals, groups and organizations gave our staff

extra energy, extra hands and extra heart to accomplish our goals

and contribute to our organization’s success.

PUC extends a warm and heartfelt thank you to all those who

volunteered with us in 2009. Your commitment drives us to remain

a leader in the nonprofit community and continue to innovate and

expand our reach.

The mINNeSoTa vIkINgS aNd wIld Give Back at PUC

The work of volunteers provides Pillsbury United Communities with the tools we need to succeed and make a difference in the lives of our participants. Some of the most impactful volunteer experiences

come from partner organizations in Minnesota. That sentiment rang true for Thanksgiving 2009 at Waite House. While so many of our community’s families were facing tough economic times, PUC

teamed with Second Harvest Food Bank, the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Wild to make the dreams of a happy, healthy Thanksgiving dinner come true for the families we serve. Players from both

Minnesota sports teams sure know how to give back! On November 17th, these dedicated volunteers joined us at Waite House to sign footballs and hockey pucks and, most importantly, donate turkeys to

over 75 families we serve in the Phillips Neighborhood of Minneapolis. Second Harvest, the Vikings and the Wild are prime examples of volunteerism and partnership creating change in our communities.

Centers/loCAtions

The four Neighborhood Centers of Pillsbury United Communities and three satellite locations are located

throughout Minneapolis and are central to the agency’s mission. They provide essential gathering spaces

for people in the community to connect with one another, to build meaningful realtionships, and to find

the resources they need to make positive changes in their lives.

While each center is distinctive - based upon the demographic makeup and unique needs of the

surrounding neighborhoods - each has developed programs that are organized around six common

focus areas:

innovations in early Childhood development

innovations in youth and teen development

innovations in Adult education and skill development

innovations in Civic engagement

innovations in essential resources

innovations in Wellness
