    Dear Mr. Clark:

    As our emotions wind down from the beautiful celebra-tions of the First National Martin Luther King Holiday, we must now return to the real world where prejudice persists. Harsh realities demand that we as blacks must continue on in our struggle for respect. I have specific reference

    to events surrounding your upcoming 13th Annual Ameri-can Music Awards, originat-ing from the Shrine Audito-rium here in Los Angeles and airing on national televi-sion this Monday. Neither I nor any member

    of the staff of Black Radio Exclusive will be present. Why? Simply because it is obviously necessary for me to introduce you to BRE, although your public rela-tions firm of record, The Shefrin Company, has some idea - although an obviously distorted one - of who we

    are. In its decision to exclude

    BRE from even the distribu-tion of publicity materials regarding the Awards show, let alone press credentials, Shefrin chose to ignore - or did not bother to pursue - the following facts about this publication. BLACK RADIO EXCLUSIVE is

    VANDROSS VICTIMIZED BY SENSATIONALISM

    It is most unfortunate that the news media's profit motivation feeds on the pub-lic's need for sensationa-lism. One recent victim of such exploitation by the press was singer Luther Van-dross, who has been a fre-quent media target. In the wake of the tragic

    automobile accident which occurred here in Los Angeles and took the life of his friend, Luther had to fur-ther endure biased, gossipy coverage. It all but ignored the fact that the tragic collision was, from all in-dications, an unavoidable accident precipitated by dangerous road conditions. Having lived on Laurel

    Canyon Boulevard, I am keen-ly aware of what that stretch of road is like. But the media chose not to pub-licize the fact that in recent weeks, there have been at least eight acci-dents in that same spot.

    Imagine trying to nego-tiate a section with steep, downhill curves and overhanging olive trees which create yet another problem: olive oil which renders the pavement danger-ously slick. Under those treacherous conditions, even Mario Andretti - or our own Willy T. Ribbs - would be in trouble. So when we allow ourselves

    to be blinded by the glare of sensational headlines, we cater to our own worst in-stincts at the expense of a public figure's private tra-gedies. Get well soon, Luther. We miss you!

    GOLDEN VOICE AWARDS SALUTE BLACK RADIO

    BRE takes special pride in saluting the six distin-guished black radio profes-sionals slated for induc-tion into the Bl ack Broadcasters Hall of Fame by the Atlanta-based Academy of Professional Broadcasters,

    Inc. The inductees are veteran

    anchor for the National Black Network News Ed Cas-tleberry; black radio pio-neer and publisher Jack "The Rapper" Gibson; and Ed Cook, a Chicago resident and radio trailblazer. Slated for posthumous induction are Ken Knight, Ray McIver and Larry Dean Faulkner. They will be honored April

    19th in Atlanta during the ceremonies of the 1986 Gold-en Voice Awards, a program designed to honor America's black radio stations and personalities. According to Marie Bostic,

    executive director of the Academy, the Golden Voice Awards will feature "20 cat-egories of competition rang-ing from 'Station of the Year' to 'Best Male and Female Announcer." All 400 black radio sta-

    tions and their personnel are eligible to compete and have been invited to parti-cipate. Thus far, at least 75 stations, representing 25 states, have agreed to com-pete for recognition. Paul E. X. Brown, the

    organization's Advisory Board Chairman, said that Castleberry and Gibson were chosen for the Hall of Fame because "they were not only pioneers, but they have man-aged to survive over the years and help develop the careers of many others along the way." We heartily concur and

    congratulate the inductees, as well as the Academy of Professional Broadcasters. See you in April!

    Los Angeles: Black recording artists made an impressive showing in the 28th Annual Grammy Awards derby. Tina Turner received five nomina-tions in various pop catego-ries and newcomer Whitney Houston's debut LP will com-pete for Album of the Year. Song of the Year finalists

    include "We Are The World" by Michael Jackson and Lio-nel Richie. Stevie Wonder will vie for a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male a-ward on the strength of his top-selling "Part-Time Lov-er"; Philip Bailey (and Phil Collins) earned a nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Bailey also competes with Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and Freddie Jackson for Best R&B Vocal Solo Performance, Male. Nominees for Best R&B Vo-

    cal Performance were Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shake-speare, Five Star and Ernie Watts. Best R&B Song nomina-tions include "Freeway of Love" written by Narada Mi-chael Walden, "Nightshift" co-written by Walter Orange and "You Give Good Love" by LaLa. Top jazz nominees included

    Wayne Shorter, Stanley Jor-dan Group and Miles Davis for Best Jazz Fusion Perfor-mance; Cleo Laine for Best Jazz Vocal Performance by a Female; and for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Male, the nominees included Jon Hen-dricks, Bobbie McFerrin and George Benson. Nominated for Best Vocal Performance, Duo or Group were Sarah Vaughn (with Barry Manilow) and Jon Hendricks (with the Manhat-tan Transfer). Instrumental soloist nomi-

    nees include Wynton Marsal-is, Miles Davis, Stanley Jordan, James Moody and Diz-zy Gillespie. Nominated in the Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Group category were Wynton Marsalis Group,

    Blue Note All-Stars and the Keith Jarrett Group. Lionel Hampton earned a nod in the big band category.

    In the aftermath of the nominations, Arista Records president Clive Davis vigo-rously protested singer Whitney Houston's disquali-fication as a nominee for Best New Artist (a category that included Sade and Fred-die Jackson). Houston is out due to duets she recorded with Jermaine Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass last year which, according to Nation-al Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) offi-cials, established her as "an identifiable artist in her own right" prior to the release of her debut album.

    Though missing out in that category, Houston received, in addition to her inclusion in the Album of the Year category, a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in which she competes with Madonna, Tina Turner and Pat Benatar. She also vies with labelmate Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie and Patti LaBelle for Best R&B Vocal Solo Perfor-mance, Female. Nominees for Best Reggae Recording, a category added last year through efforts initiated by BRE publisher Sidney Miller, include the LPs Cliff Hanger by Jimmy Cliff, Resistance by Burning Spear and Play the Game Right, the debut recoFding by the Melody Ma-kers, Bob Marley's heirs.

    An analysis of label rep-resentation in the Grammy nominations reveals that RCA and A&M, and Associated La-bels, including Arista, led the field of record distri-bution organizations. Its total of 69 nominations in-cluded 34 for RCA, 12 for Arista, and two for RCA/Co-lumbia Home Video. These 48 were augmented by 17 for A&M and four for the Erato la-bel, both of which are RCA-distributed.

    Television audiences will finally get a steady dose of Melba Moore's acting talent, when the versatile performer and recent Grammy Award no-minee's sitcom, "Melba," debuts on CBS-TV Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. Produced by Columbia Pic-

    tures Television in con-junction with Saul Ilson

    Prods, "Melba" is the story of recently-divorced Melba Patterson, now a single pa-rent with a nine-year-old daughter (played by Jamila Perry), living with Melba's mother, Rose (Barbara Meek), in a New York City apart-ment. Into the wholesome situa-

    tion comes Susan Slater (played by Gracie Harrison), who Mother Rose, having worked for Susan's father as a domestic, raised from the time Susan's mother had died at three. Melba, black, and Susan,

    white, were raised as sis-ters and consider themselves kin. This makes for some laughable situations in this half-hour show. Melba's works as Deputy

    Commissioner of the Manhat-tan Visitors Center, and her dealings with her employees, Jack, played by veteran TV comedian Lou Jacobi, and Gil, played by Gil Mirand, can keep you in stitches. In the first two episodes,

    it is apparent that, at least for now, Moore is playing straight woman to the daffy humour of Harri-son, Jacobi and Mirand. As Susan, Harrison has

    confidence, even though he had never held such a lofty administrative position at a radio station prior to his

    episode, when Susan and Mel-ba go to spy on Melba's ex-husband's new girlfriend at the travel agency where she works, Susan tells her that she's looking for a singles getaway with "fun, sun, writhing and romping." The show has been given a

    six week commitment by the CBS-TV network, a commitment which will slightly detract - time-wise - from Moore's other endeavors. Her late-night show "Melba Moore's Collection of Love Songs," the recording of her new LP and plans for a tour have been put on hold so that she may plunge into the rigor of taping a weekly series. The New York-native is not

    new to TV or acting. She has stage credits such as "Hair," "Timbuktu?" and "Purlie," for which she won a Tony. She has also been seen on

    TV in the film "Ellis Island" and on a segment of "Hotel." Riding a crest of popu-

    larity, Moore was recently nominated for best rock per-formance/female for her se-venth LP, the Capitol Re-cords release, Read My Lips.

    working on the latest Wonder single, "Go Home," a clip which employs intrigue and byzantine maneuvering. It was indeed a tricky

    shoot, as Wonder's manage-ment requested that the clip be shot without his pre-sence. He did show up in the

    third day of shooting and portrayed a streetwise nar-rator. Art Evans, who was an

    Oscar-nominated actor in "A Soldier's Story," played a detective in the clip; Pris-cilla Harris and Charles Hayward acted the parts of separated lovers; and Herbie Hancock, on the set just for a visit, was put to work in a cameo. Parker directed and Ali

    I first walked into that studio as a high schooler to do a student show," he added. Handy has gone from a

    background as on-air per-sonality and as a versatile technician to his current post, where he says the station has been successful mixing audiences, music and promotions. "We call ourselves an ur-

    ban contemporary station so that the advertising agen-cies will have an idea that we attract a cross-over au-dience," Handy explained. He added that despite the

    effort to exude a more main-stream format, "there is heavy emphasis on personali-ties here and we also do quite a few promotions." Handy is quick to explain,

    however, that the promotions are not of the "album and ticket giveaway" variety. "We do a great deal of

    community oriented promo-tions," he said. "We hid

    500 colored Easter eggs in a park and had kids come to the park to find them." Handy said that the sta-

    tion often runs promotions in "neutral" areas of the city "so our white listeners will not be afraid to come out and support the sta-tion." He said KUCB gave away

    more than 100 turkeys to more than 100 families so that they might enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner In addition, the station had parents bring their children to the station, located in downtown Lafay-ette, to receive toys for the Yule holiday. He said that the station's

    substantial commitment to the community is a major reason for its success, a-long with KUCB's music mix. Although he explained that

    the station is currently in the market for a program/mu-sic director, he said that his philosophy of mixing music from the national scene with music exhibiting the local heritage is con-tinued in the absence of a PD. "Part of the music is

    programmed from national

    sources," Handy said, con-tinuing, "and there is also music from the local heri-tage - zydeco music." The zydeco proponent,

    Clifton Chenier, was feted by the station upon re-ceiving a Grammy Award. "We presented Chenier's

    wife and family with a spe-cial plaque at a ceremony downtown and also presented plaques to other musicians who are visible in zydeco music," Handy recalled. Handy is steeped in that

    heritage, having his up-bringing in Crowley, LA to thank for it. He has worked in various

    technical broadcasting jobs, including simultaneous stints at KALO-FM and KFDM-TV where he served as a production director and a sound engineer, respec-tively. Handy said that after he

    retires ("maybe in 10 years"), he would like to start his own TV commercial production company and to learn the intricacies of computer graphics. If Handy brings this dream

    to fruition, he will have come full circle, and then some.

    POST Hollywood: Gil Friesen, Pre-sident of A&M Records, an-nounces the appointment of Jesus Garber to the newly created position of Director of Black Music Marketing.

    In his new capacity, Gar-ber will coordinate the mar-keting plans for A&M's Urban and Dance formatted artists. He will be responsible for the advertising, merchan-dising and overall artist development of the label's black roster, while working under the auspices of A&M's VP of Marketing Services, Bob Reitman.

    Garber will also continue to carry out his duties as R&B West Coast Promotion Director and to report to Step Johnson, VP of Promo-tion at A&M. New albums from Janet Jackson, Vesta Wil-liams, Michael Jonzun and Jeffrey Osborne will be Gar-ber% initial priorities. Before joining A&M last

    May, Garber had been the Western Regional Promotion Manager at Motown Records for five years.

    a "polished urban contempo-rary format," General Mana-ger LEE ZAPIS made his pres-ence known to V-103 by sending a gift of crushed party hats and one-half of a cake with a card which read, "The party's over!" On the second day, the other half of the cake arrived bearing the inscription "—.From Your Friends at WEKS." Set to program the aggressive new outlet is MITCH FAULK-NER, formerly with V-103, who commented that he was having "big fun" going after the nine-year institution and added that he would be doing some things musically, particularly in the area of research, that may be considered "unorthodox."     Los Angeles: Ken Kragen, Project Organizer of the "Hands Across America" pro-ject, announced plans during a press conference at Le Bel Age Hotel to raise a projec-ted $50-100 million to com-bat domestic hunger and homelessness. Before a packed room of celebrities and the news media, Kragen acknowledged the millions raised by his USA for Africa project to aid Ethiopia's famine victims, but added, "this project represents America for Americans." The conference focused on

    promotional activities and the logistical framework for the 4,000 mile coast-to-coast line in which an esti-mated 10 million people will join hands on Sunday, May 25 (for 20 minutes at noon, Pacific time.) The Hands Across America

    route will stretch across 16 states and the District of Columbia, with participants contributing a minimum of $10 to join the line. Kragen publicly thanked

    Prince for acting as a spon-sor of the project in do-

    nating $13,200 to cover the first mile; the money will ensure that people who are financially unable to make a contribution will be able to participate. Speaking on Prince's be-

    half, Wendy Melvoin of the Revolution simply announced that Prince's contribution stemmed from his belief that "hunger affects us all." During the two-hour con-

    ference, Kragen said, "The media is our partner in making this a success. When all of radio played 'We Are the World' simultaneously, it became a movement."     "GUILTY" OF ANOTHER HIT

    The music business rarely comes any closer than this to an "overnight success" story: Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples, young ex-gospel singers from Dallas, TX, had been eking out a living playing small, local nightclubs. Yarbrough's friend for several years, R&B/Pop singer Goodie, had already nabbed himself a contract with fledgling L.A.-based Total Experience Records. It was through him (and his labelmates, The Gap Band, who "discovered" the duo at a Dallas nitery) that Yarbrough & Peoples were brought to the attention of Lonnie Simmons. "After that," said Yar-

    brough, modestly, "things started to happen fast." The year was 1979 when

    Simmons brought them to Los Angeles. Two years later, the pair's debut LP, The Two Of Us, went gold, thar— iis to Tfie appeal of one cut, "Don't Stop the Music," a catchy bit of techno-funk

    that highlighted Yarbrough's spacy, Stevie Wonder-ish vocals. "It's a challenge to try

    to live up to that record," said Peoples. "We were blessed to have had a debut hit so strong. We're just striving to do that well again." They're again confident

    that they've succeeded with a fourth LP, Guilty, a polished, nine-song pa aage that runs the gamut from urban-Texas funk ("Who Is She") to stylish, sophisti-pop ("Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Everything," and the title cut.) "Calvin really loves 'I'll

    Give Anything To Have You Back," Peoples added. "At home, he plays it every morning." Prior to signing with To-

    tal Experience, they had sent demo tapes to "a few record companies on the East Coast," Yarbrough recalled. "But they all wanted to break up the team. They weren't interested in a boy/

    girl act. We're thankful that we met Lonnie Simmons. He's the only one who appre-ciated us as a duo." What are Yarbrough &

    Peoples capable of as a team that they couldn't accom-plish as solo artists? "Objectivity," Yarbrough

    said. "We bring out the best in each other." "We understand each

    other," Peoples explained. "We know how far we can go without stretching beyond our limitations." That understanding stems

    from a friendship that goes all the way back to the pair's pre-school days. As children, they even went to the same piano teacher: "We used to perform for our families at home," said Peoples. "Everybody would gather around the piano and we'd sing gospel, praise the Lord and just have a good time." As they grew up, the two

    sang together in the church choir. Upon graduating from high school, they briefly

    went their separate ways when Yarbrough attended Dal-las' North Lake College while Peoples enrolled at Bishop College. Ask her what she enjoys

    most about their profes-sional/personal relationship and Peoples sums it up simp-ly: "The unity." Go on to ask them why they

    haven't done more live per-forming in their seven-year history as a recording act, and you'll get a lengthier reply from Yarbrough: "That's something we've been asking, too! We have had successful European tours, and we plan to do more tour-ing in the U.S. on this album. But agencies have looked at our past albums and they could never figure out who to book us with. Jeffrey Osborne? Atlantic Starr? "It shouldn't have been a

    problem, but live performan-ces.., that's an untapped area for us," he said. "We haven't had the visi-
