What is Pile?

• It is a long slender foundation member made either of timber, structural steel or concrete to transfer the load of the structure in deep foundation.

Advantage of Piling

• To take the structure deep into the ground and hence preventing over turning.

• To provide a strong bedrock soil (i.e. higher bearing capacity) for the structure and transfer the total load of the structure.

• To distribute the weight of the structure over a large area.

• To prevent unequal settlement.

Types of pile

Depending on their function:

• Bearing piles• Friction piles• Sheet piles• Anchor piles• Batter piles• Fender piles• Compaction piles

Depending on their materials:

• Timber piles• Concrete piles• Composite piles• Steel piles

Casting of a Flyover Pile(cast in situ)

(Location- Mouchak Mogbazar Flyover)

Page 8: Piling of a flyover (AUST 2.2 A)

•At first, the locations of piles are fixed by theodolite surveying.

1. Excavation Started

2. If utility pipes are found during excavation, then the location point of pile is changed

3. No utility within 2 meter

•After excavating 6m temporary steel case is placed and then bentonite is used.

• Excavation continues according to design using rotary rig machine

Making of Steel Case

•Process of making the vertical reinforcements in circular arrangement

Page 15: Piling of a flyover (AUST 2.2 A)

•Circular rings are used to make stirrups and to maintain perfect circular arrangement

Thread Coupler

•It is used to join the inner rebars

Load test of pile :

•Load test is done by using hydraulic jack Load test continued (each block weighs 1 ton)

Observations:

• The water that they used to admix the bentonite was recycled for next use also.

•They maintained the weiring and welding properly to make steel case strong enough to carry the load.

•When they broke the pile head, it should be above 6” from the ground surface. But in some cases accidently, they couldn’t manage to do so. Therefore, they placed an extra layer of CC of 6” which shouldn’t be as it couldn’t take the load properly.
