January Calendar 14
Grace and Peace to you! After my son was born, I became a marathoner. I ran a number of half marathons, trained
for three full marathons and ran one full marathon (two attempts were derailed by injury).
One of the most important things I learned during my training is that as I made my way
through all of the training miles I needed to think of myself as a marathoner. Before the
race, I was coached to consider myself a marathoner. I was sheepish to do this at first
because I felt like a phony; I had not yet crossed the finish line so I didn’t want to group
myself into a category of people with whom I did not belong.
But, I trusted my coach and called myself a marathoner. And that one act changed the
course of my training.
There was a shift made in my head when I started calling myself a marathoner. I found that
I had wells of strength and pain tolerance that I never thought possible. And I think those
shifts that we make only stick when they become part of the fabric of our being. Often those
shifts and changes already exist within us, we just have not named them as such.
I think about this each year we enter a season of resolutions. Of attempts to fix or change
something about ourselves. And I wonder how we would approach them if we took the
advice of my coach and just named the truth for ourselves, even if we have yet to
accomplish it. Instead of resolutions, they would just become part of who we already are. As
true as this is for us as individual people I think it is true for us as a congregation.
One of the things I look forward to is continuing to live into the mission statement written for
the congregation: Pilgrim United Church of Christ is a welcoming, mission-oriented
community of people. We provide relevant faith-based opportunities for all people, regard-
less of race, age, ability, gender, or sexual orientation. Our congregation is present with
each other in a genuine, positive, and caring manner. We strive to make a difference in
ourselves, each other, the underserved, our local community, and the people of the world.
In other words: Pilgrim is Mission Driven. People Focused. We are the Light on the Hill.
That reads much differently than saying, “We will be the Light on the Hill.” And, if I am
honest, I prefer the present tense, because we already are a light on the hill. This is not a
resolution. It is part of the fabric of our being. It already exists in the work we do within the
church walls and in the world. It is a statement of who we already are. There is incredible
strength in those words, incredible power that names us as a light in this world. A light that
is needed so deeply in this world.
So as you think about your resolutions, as you think about your year ahead, add to that list,
“I carry the Light” Own that truth, that as you wade into the New Year, you carry with you the
light of Christ into a world threated by darkness. And no, I will not accept, “I will try to carry
the Light.” Call me coach, but I have already seen you carry it. I already know it is within
you. So own it. Let it sink deeper into who you are.
Many blessings to you and your family in the New Year!
Pastor Ashley

MISSIONS
THANKSGIVING IN-GATHERING—Thank you to everyone who helped stock Family Sharing’s Food Pantry by bringing non-perishable donations for our annual In-Gathering. Our donations totaled 600 pounds! Family Sharing provides food, clothing and household items to people in need in Ozaukee County. Groceries, gently used clothing, furniture, books, kitchen and season décor items are always welcome donations. Proceeds from the retail/resale shop are used to purchase groceries, children’s winter coats and school supplies. Family Sharing is located at 1002 Overland Ct in Grafton. Drop by with a donation and while you’re there stop in to check out their resale store.
HOLIDAY CHRISTMAS PROJECT—We were able to provide gifts for 92 children through our annual Christmas project. Most of the gifts were taken to Mount Horeb, our sister church in Milwaukee. A few children who are members of Pilgrim also found some extra surprises under their Christmas tree and this is all thanks to your generosity. A BIG THANK YOU goes to Rochelle McInerney and her committee for organizing this holiday project. If you saw the pile of gifts in the Narthex, you have an idea of just what it took to organize and deliver all of the gifts. Thank you to everyone involved!
CHRISTMAS CARD DONATIONS—Our donation of Christmas cards was sent to Stanley Correctional Institution in Stanley, Wisconsin to be used by their 1,600 inmates. They were so appreciative that we thought of them this year.
FAMILY PROMISE OF OZAUKEE—The goal of Family Promise is to provide families in need with shelter, basic needs and assistance as they seek permanent housing. Pilgrim volunteers provide support to Grace Lutheran Church during the weeks they are scheduled to host. Our next week to volunteer is the week beginning on Sunday, February 17. Grace held a Christmas Cookie Sale Fundraiser in December and raised $1,028.00, which will help them cover the cost of hosting for Family Promise four times a year. Several members of Pilgrim baked cookies and helped pack up over 90 pounds of cookies. Members of Grace thank us for our support and say they couldn’t do it without our help. If you would like to become one of the Pilgrim volunteers, please contact Donna Tredrea, [email protected]
ST. BEN’S COMMUNITY MEAL PROGRAM—St. Ben’s serves a hot, home-made dinner six nights a week, Sunday to Friday. Over 90,000 meals are served each year. All are welcome and are considered family in a community that shares a warm, safe environment. We provide the dessert on the first Friday of each month. Our next commitment to send at least 24 desserts is on Friday, January 4. If you’d like to contribute something, please sign up in the Narthex. The desserts should be at church and placed on one of the shelves near the carport entrance before noon on the 4. We also help to serve the meal on the second Tuesday of each month. If you are interested in helping, but have questions, please contact Pam Holloway, 414 429-3624. There is a sign-up sheet posted in the Narthex for serving on Tuesday, January 8.
MR. BOB’S UNDER THE BRIDGE MINISTRY—A message from Mr. Bob: “WE ARE BLESSED! Again, we find ourselves busting at the seams with donations and again need to temporarily remove our bin until January 10. For those of you with WINTER coats, blankets, sleeping bags, boots, gloves and long underwear for us, please drop items off on Thursday evenings from 6-7pm while our crew sorts at Advent.” Advent Church is located at W63N642 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg.
YARN AND FABRIC MINISTRY—The Women’s Prison in Union Grove appreciates donations of yarn and cotton fabric in order to continue creating their quilts and afghans. You may place your donations, marked “Yarn Ministry,” on one of the shelves near the carport door.
EMPTY PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE COLLECTION—The empty amber prescription bottles that we collect are taken to Advent where they are picked up by a volunteer from the Bread of Healing Clinic in Milwaukee. Our bin is located in Kalweit Hall.
The Mission team will meet on Sunday, January 6th
after the 10:30 service in the Conference Room.
This is a very important meeting as we will be doing the planning for 2019.
For questions on any of the Mission projects, to suggest a new project, or if you would like to join Pilgrim’s Mission team, please contact Donna Tredrea, dtred26@gmail or text to 262 302-0013.
Thank you for your donation in memory of Robert Molaski in the amount of $100. Your donation will be applied to our Hunger Ministry to further their mission. -Jay Frymark, Director of Administration St . Joseph’s Parish

Thank you for the wonderful Christmas Caroling Sunday afternoon. It was so good to see all your smiling faces and enjoy the great music. The goodie bag
was full of wonderful surprises, which I will certainly enjoy.
I wish you all a wonderful holiday and a new year, full of many blessings!

Don’t Forget the Church in Your New Year’s Resolutions!
As you pause over this holiday period, remember to bring your church back into focus. Now may be the
time to commit yourself to going beyond the norm. If you are not already reaching out as a volunteer in
some area of the church organization, ask yourself:
What can I do to help make my church a bigger part of my life?
What more could I do to make a difference and support our ongoing programs?
How can I relieve some of the tasks from others who are now picking up multiple functions?
Even if I am limited in time, are there one-time or short-time things that I could volunteer my services?
Well, just ask. Your church would love to help you find that activity that fits your schedule.
We all have talents that we can share with others.
Just to name a few things for those who are able:
When May comes along, we devote one Saturday morning as a clean-up day to work on outside chores
to make the grounds attractive for our church members, neighbors and any passersby.
In addition, do you realize that we need 10-12 people who will tend our landscape beds on the property
during the growing season? Last year we had 5 volunteers. You only need to periodically tend to a bed
to keep it from overgrowth and control over the weeds.
Would you be an usher? Just ask a Sunday head usher for details. There is always a sign-up sheet.
I encourage you to say “I here highly resolve” to play an active role at Pilgrim Church.
What better way than to add this role to your New Year’s Resolution!
Happy New Year!
Ron Wildasin
From the Counting Team Shortly after the end of the year, you will be receiving a year-end statement for your giving for the year. Please review it for accuracy. Offerings given at the end of 2018 for 2019 gifts should be listed as Prepaid Pledges versus Envelope Offerings. The statement will contain instructions for reporting any discrepancies. Please note that certain items are included or excluded based upon IRS guidelines.
Excluded are items such as the purchasing of poinsettias or Easter lilies, monies given toward Lenten meals or the spaghetti dinner, and confirmation fees, as you are receiving something of value for these amounts.
Included items are envelope giving and mission giving. Travel expenses for mission trips are also included as specifically allowed by the IRS.
Please consider giving through our e-giving program. Pilgrim can conveniently withdraw money from your bank account on a weekly, semi-monthly or monthly basis to fulfill your pledged giving. E-giving is a convenient, hassle-free way for members to donate and benefits Pilgrim as it creates a steady inflow of funds that the church can count on throughout the year. E-giving forms can be found on the envelope table in the narthex.

Dear Friends and Colleagues in ministry,
Greetings to you this Advent and upcoming Christmas seasons. We know how busy you are. This email brings to you an article for your January newsletters about Gen-eral Synod 32 Volunteering.
Between 300-400 volunteers are needed for General Synod 32 in Milwaukee, June 21-25. We need your help in getting this word out to the Wisconsin Conference members.
Linked below this message is an article your office can "cut and paste" into January church newsletters, as well as in any weekly correspondence you might have with your congregations. Copies can also be made to have on hand in your church building. We will be sending you a bulletin insert to use early in the new year as well.
As the article states, an electronic volunteer registration will be coming to you in January to distribute in your congregations. We are in the process of getting the computer pro-gram ready to go. Although June may seem a long way off, it is not when we look at all the details needing to be completed for this grand event. The most important are the Vol-unteers!
Thank you for your support and help in getting the word out about Volunteers for General Synod 32. Thank you for all the ministry you do.
Grace and peace,
Debbie and Tom Payden, Tim Perkins, Bonnie Andrews
