PILGRIMAGE TO

Day 1 – April 9: Atlanta - Guadalajara Our Mexico adventure and spiritual journey begins as we depart the United States on our flight to Guadalajara. Upon arrival in Mexico- Guadalajara we will be welcomed by our local guide and time permitting (depending on flight arrival time) we drive to Our Lady of Zapo-pan for Mass. We see Tlaquepaque and the downtown area of Guadalajara including the Cathedral, Plaza Tapatia and many other interesting sites and buildings connected with the Colonial era. Overnight in Guadalajara. (D)

Day 2 – April 10: San Toribio RomoAfter breakfast, we depart for a visit to the new Sanctuario de Santo Toribio Romo, built for one of the 25 Mexican Martyrs killed by soldiers during the persecution of the church in the mid-1920s. The Sanctuario is in a small town called Santa Ana de Guadalupe. The Sanctuario draws huge numbers of pilgrims, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. It is not unusual to have fifty thousand people attend Sunday service. St. Toribio’s (also known as the Saint of Immigrants) remains are in a special urn which is located above the main Altar and is visible both from the Sanctuario and from a small Chapel behind it. We pray before the Remains of Santo Toribio, and reflect upon the various murals depicting his life, ministry, and murder during the Mexican persecution. He was ordained at age 22 and suffered martyrdom at age 27. Santo Toribio continues to be invoked constantly in our own time by todays’ migrants, immigrants, and refugees. In a nearby small town the Re-mains of San Pedro Esqueda are buried with a new Chapel built over the site. The soldiers had attempted to tie him to a large mesquite tree and burn him alive, but the tree would not catch fire. Getting angry, the soldiers shot him. Overnight San Juan de Los Lagos. (B, D)

Day 3 – April 11: San Juan de Los Lagos Today we explore San Juan De Los Lagos, which is famous for its Basilica of the Virgin of San Juan de Los Lagos. There is great devotion to Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos, in Mexico. We see the magnificent wooden image above the main Altar, and celebrate Mass here. When the Spanish missionaries arrived in Mexico in 1542, one of the priests placed a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the local chapel. Per local tradition, a young girl performing in a circus fell and died. When the statue was placed on her, she was miraculously healed and came back to life. Because of this, thousands began to come to the Chapel seeking healings for themselves or others. It is the second most popular pilgrimage site after the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The number of visitors annually is estimated to be over nine million pilgrims. Devotion has spread throughout not only Mexico, but much of the U.S. southwest as well. Pope John Paul II visited here in 1990 when he celebrated Mass for an estimated 6 million people. Father will be our guide today showing us several smaller but beautiful churches including the birthplace of San Pedro Esqueda. Overnight in Guanajuato. (B, D)

Day 4 – April 12: Cristo ReyAfter a city tour of Guanajuato we continue on with our journey to Cristo Rey to see the gigantic statue of Christ. The Guanajuato statue of “Cristo Rey” is the world’s second larg-est statue of Christ the King. The largest is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Mexican statue weighs 80 tones and stands at 22m, but the height is accentuated due to the positioning on top of the domed church. The statue of “Cristo Rey”, Guanajuato depicts Christ with his arms extended and open with two angels flanking his sides. One angel holds the royal crown and the second carries the crown of thorns. The “Cristo Rey del Cubilete” statue is a popular pilgrimage destination for Mexicans, though no holy apparition or miracle has ever occurred here. Pilgrims perform acts of devotion and sacrifice in the hope that their prayers are answered. Overnight in Queretaro. (B, D)

ITINERARY

Day 5 – April 13: QueretaroEarly departure for Sierra Gorda. In the area, we visit two of the five mission churches St. Juniper Serra founded in Sierra Gorda region of Mexico. One is in the town of Jalpan and the other is in the community of Tancoyol. The mission in Jalpan was constructed between 1751 and 1758 and dedicated to Saint James the Greater as defender of the faith. It was the first of five missions built to evangelize the area. The mission in Tancoyol is dedicated to Our Lady of Light. It is thought to have been built by Friar Juan Ramos de Lora, who re-sided in the community between 1760 and 1767. We explore both churches and also have a visit of the Church of Santa Cruz de los Milgros, where the spine tree grows in form of the cross and where Juniper Serra stayed. Overnight in Queretaro. (B, D)

Day 6 – April 14: Mexico CityAfter breakfast, we board our motorcoach and journey to Mexico City where we start our tour. See Plaza of the Three Cultures and the place where Juan Diego was baptized. Contin-ue to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the holiest place in the Western Hemisphere, for an introductory guided tour of the Basilica and the surrounding grounds, including the old Basilica, Tepeyac Hill Indian Church, the Church of the Well, and the Monument of the Offerings. Mass will be celebrated at one of the side altars. We have time to settle in and enjoy dinner. Overnight Mexico City. (B, D)

Day 7 – April 15: Mexico City: Tulpetlac and the PyramidsThis morning we visit Tulpetlac, the site of the 5th apparition to Juan Diego’s uncle, Juan Bernardino, and the Monastery of Acolman. Then proceed to Teotihuacan to visit the Pyr-amids of the Sun and Moon. This evening enjoy dinner with live mariachi music at a local restaurant. Overnight Mexico City. (B, D.)
