Understanding Your Waste Collection Schedule
Step 1: Determine your collection day and area (A or B) on the collection map above or look up your address at barrie.ca/CollectionSchedule.
Step 2: Look for these symbols each month throughout the calendar to help identify which materials are collected in your collection area.
Containers
Paper
Organics
Garbage
Yard Waste
Did you know waste collection has been ranked the 6th most dangerous job in Canada? Your waste collector encounters many challenges each day—from extreme weather to unseen sharp objects in garbage bags. It’s a tough job, but you can help them out!
The Challenges• Weather conditions such as
ice, sleet, snow and freezing temperatures
• Slippery roads and shoulders
• High speed and heavily travelled roads
• Unseen sharp objects
• Overweight and hard to reach containers
• Messy or hard to see materials
• Paper and containers mixed together in recycling boxes
How You Can Help• Put materials where they can be
easily seen — not hidden behind parked cars or on snow banks
• Slow down, pass with care
• Do not put broken glass or needles in your recycling box
• Wrap sharp objects (i.e. glass or nails) in protective material such as newsprint and label garbage that contains safety hazards
• Dispose of syringes and needles at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility or return to your pharmacy
• Keep bins under 20 kg (45 lb)
• Separate recyclables into 2 boxes; blue containers box and grey paper box
Recycling trucks are lighter than garbage trucks, making them challenging to drive on ice and heavy snow.

Curbside Collection Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy doesn’t Barrie accept kitty litter or pet waste in the green bin?The facility that makes compost from the City of Barrie’s green bin program does not currently have the ability to process pet waste or kitty litter.
How should I set out my curbside recycling to help ensure it gets picked up?The City of Barrie has a two stream recycling program where paper products are collected and processed separately from containers. Mixing these materials contaminates the recycling and may result in the recycling boxes not being collected. Separate your recyclables into 2 boxes, grey box for paper and blue box for containers. If you are unsure as to where an item goes, check out the sorting tool at barrie.ca/WhereDoesItGo.
How should I put cardboard out so it gets collected?Cardboard should be flattened and bundled no larger than 75cmx75cmx20cm. Place in or beside your recycling box. Cardboard that is oversized or not bundled may not be collected.
How much garbage am I allowed to put out for collection? The garbage allowance for:
Single family residence: 2 bags or 2 cans every other week
Commercial properties in Business Improvement Area (BIA): twice weekly collection, 6 bags per week
Commercial properties outside of BIA: 12 bags every other week
What do I do with plastic flower pots?Plastic flower pots or plant trays are considered a low grade plastic and cannot be recycled. These items should be put in the garbage.
Why are plastic bags not allowed in the green bin program?Plastic does not break down in the composting process. Options for lining your organics kitchen bin include:
• certified compostable bin liners/bags • paper bags• newspaper• popcorn and pet food bags without plastic liners• paper leaf and yard waste bags• boxboard such as cereal and cracker boxes• disposable paper coffee cups
When is yard waste collected?Curbside collection of yard waste occurs during selected months, as indicated below. Refer to the symbols throughout the calendar to determine when yard waste is collected in your area (to determine your area, please refer to the map on page 3).

Winter months often mean cold, unpredictable weather and poor driving conditions. These conditions can result in waste collection challenges faced by both residents and curbside collectors.
Residents are encouraged to follow these suggestions when preparing and placing materials curbside for collection:
• To avoid organics from freezing to your bin, line the bottom of your bin with cardboard or newspaper
• Do not place containers on top of or behind a snowbank. Place on your driveway or shovel a clear, flat and accessible surface on your snowbank (approximately knee height) upon which to place waste bins.

All leaf and yard waste collected throughout the City is brought to the Barrie Landfill where it is processed into compost. It is important that only leaf and yard waste materials are put out for collection in order to produce nutrient rich compost.
If It Doesn’t Grow It Doesn’t Go! Residents are reminded not to place any glass, plastic or metal items in their yard waste (ie pet waste, pet toys, plastic plant pots, plastic soil bags, garden tools, treated wood, etc.). Check out the Sorting Guide at the back of this calendar for a list of acceptable yard waste material or use the sorting tool at barrie.ca/WhereDoesItGo.
Leaf and yard waste that is contaminated with garbage can result in compost failing to meet the requirements acceptable for sale.

New to Me Day (formerly Free Goods Exchange Day) is similar to a garage sale, but without the money or hassle. Everything you place at the end of your driveway or at the edge of your lawn is FREE. On the second Saturday in June, place all usable goods on your curb and mark them with the New to Me Day
poster available at barrie.ca so that others know they are available for taking. You can also share the items you have available on the City’s Facebook event page to show others what you’re offering. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. that day as there will be no
municipal collection of these items. If you need to get rid of unwanted items after New to Me Day, visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection for more information.JUNE

SANITARY SEWER The sanitary sewer system is a series of underground pipes that transport wastewater from homes and businesses to the Wastewater Treatment Facility. Here, it’s treated before entering Lake Simcoe. Flushing anything other than human waste and toilet paper can cause problems with your plumbing, municipal sewer lines, the Wastewater Treatment Facility and the environment.
Please do not flush down sinks and toilets:• Any plastic materials• Baby wipes & personal wipes• Cotton swabs• Dental floss • Disposable diapers • Hair from brushes or combs• Kitchen grease• Kitty Litter• Medication
• Newspapers, rags or cloth• Oil, fuels & other hazardous materials• Sanitary napkins or plastic tampon
applicators• Sump pump water
STORM SEWER The municipal storm sewer system collects rainwater and surface water runoff from roads, lawns and parking lots. It is important that ONLY rain enters the storm drains as it is discharged, untreated, to creeks and Kempenfelt Bay. All waste material, such as yard waste, pet waste, hazardous waste, etc. are not to be disposed of into catch basins or waterways.

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGYClimate change presents challenges that municipalities need to face and manage. The City has developed a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Implementation Plan to build community resilience. The Strategy has goals to adapt to climate change. These include maintaining public
health and safety, minimizing risks to buildings and properties, strengthening infrastructure resilience, helping businesses and tourism, protecting biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem functions, minimizing disruption to services, and building community resilience.
IMPLEMENTATION PLANCity departments work cooperatively to ensure the goals of the Adaptation Strategy are met. The key adaptation actions in the Implementation Plan are at various stages of implementation-from complete to ongoing or upcoming. The City recognizes that climate change information
is constantly evolving and strives to ensure the future actions address the uncertainty of climate change planning. To learn more about climate change adaptation in Barrie, visit barrie.ca/ClimateChange.

SHOP WITH MEANINGFocus on quality over quantity, and try to select products that come in minimal packaging.
GIVE AN EXPERIENCEInstead of material gifts, consider taking a trip or buying an “experience”.
MAKE HOMEMADE GIFTSFill a reusable jar with the ingredients to make brownies or cookies, paintings, knitting or handmade ornaments.
UTILIZE RE-USABLE GIFT WRAPPINGWhether it is a gift bag or box that can be used year after year, or homemade wrapping paper or gift tags from recyclables.
LOOK FOR GIFTS WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGEA book about nature, a refillable water bottle, or a donation to an organization that supports the environment are great ideas. Also look for items made from recycled material.
