The University of Missouri–St. Louis is a public metropolitan research university located in Missouri’s most populous andeconomically important region. our students

As the largest university in the St. Louis area, the University of Missouri–St. Louis enrolls 13,181 undergraduates and 3,621 graduate and professionaldegree seekers.

Our students are motivated. They come ready to learn. The average age is27, and many are full-time employees and have families. The freshman classearned an average composite score of 23.5 on the ACT college entranceexam, topping the Missouri average and national average for 2010.

And UMSL students are a varied group. While 83 percent hail from the St. Louis metropolitan area, the total student body represents 49 states and 62 countries. African American students account for 20 percent of on-campus enrollment, and women make up 59 percent.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis is home to 1,107 faculty members who deliver 49 bachelor’s degree programs, 30 master’s degree programs, 14 doctoral degree programs and the only professional degree in optometry in Missouri. UMSL provides 21 graduate certificate programs and two education specialist programs.

Our faculty members are consistently recognized for being among the best in the United States in a number of disciplines.

And “diversity” isn’t just a buzzword at UMSL. It’s an attribute. African Americans comprise 12 percent of university faculty, and women make up51 percent of our full-time faculty. Both percentagesare above the respective national averages.

UMSL Tritons

The Department of Athletics at the University of Missouri–St. Louisoffers young men and women outstanding learning and competitiveexperiences, and our student-athletes provide fans of the UMSL Tritons with an exciting brand of intercollegiate athletics.

Named for the mythological Greek god and messenger of the deep,the Tritons compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at theNCAA Division II level. The university fields 11 athletic teams andoffers scholarships in each sport. Men’s sports are baseball, basketball,golf, soccer and tennis. Women’s sports are basketball, golf, soccer,softball, tennis and volleyball.

And our student-athletes are not students in name only. The Tritonshave a graduation rate that consistently ranks higher than the entirestudent population at UMSL and regularly earn a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.0.

Did you know?

More than 75 UMSL student-athletes representing eight sports have earned All-America honors since basketball standout Jack Stenner became the university’s first All-American for his 1968-69 season.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis is situated on 350 rolling acres in north St. Louis County. Natural Bridge Road runs between North Campus and South Campus, which are both dotted with native Missouri trees and a mix of interesting architecture.

More than 70 structures account for more than 3.5 million square feet of building space. Among those structures is the Blanche M. Touhill PerformingArts Center. Designed by world-renowned architectural firm Pei Cobb Freed &Partners, the center opened in 2003 and features two performance halls.

The public transportation provider for the St. Louis area, Metro, operates tworail stations at UMSL, one on North Campus and one on South Campus.

And the university offers students traditional residential housing and apartmentliving. Nearly 1,000 students reside in on-campus housing.

The campus also is home to a regional bike and running trail.

Did you know?

The award-winning Oak Hall is the newestresidential space at UMSL. The facility features four-bedroom suites, heated outdoor pool, laundry facilities, game roomand exercise room.

The Nursing Administration Building houses the College of Nursing on South Campus. The College of Optometry, Pierre Laclede Honors College and Kathy J. Weinman Advocacy Centre are also located on South Campus.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis has about 2,700full- and part-time employees, who earn more than $132 million in salary and benefits. The universityspends more than $50 million on goods and services.

UMSL research faculty and two university-operatedbusiness incubators help create new product innovationsand jobs in the St. Louis area.

And more than 58,000 UMSL alumni live and work inthe St. Louis area. Annually, they earn $3 billion, whichis about $1 billion more than they would earn withouttheir college degrees.

Express Scripts (pictured) is among the St. Louis area’s largest employers andamong the nation’s largest pharmacy benefits managers. The company’s worldheadquarters is located on the North Campus at UMSL. Gary Brandes, assistant professor of music at UMSL, conducts the University Symphonic Band in the 1,625-seat Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall at the Blanche M.Touhill Performing Arts Center. Thecenter is also home to the 300-seat E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater. The center enables UMSL tobring a wide range of performing artsto St. Louis and offer superb learning experiences to students.

n UMSL increased its number of graduates by25 percent from 2001 to 2010. The campusgraduated 3,000 students in 2010.

n UMSL is ranked 14th nationally in a survey of “Best College and University Civic Partnerships.” The survey measureseconomic, social and cultural impact onmetro regions.

n UMSL received a TOP 50 Award from theSt. Louis Regional Commerce & GrowthAssociation for its contributions in “shapingthe future of St. Louis.”

n Five UMSL programs are ranked among the top 20 nationally in the Academic Analytics Faculty Productivity Index. They are: counselor education, informationsystems, criminology, evolutionary biologyand teaching and learning.

n UMSL optometry students earned a 98 percent pass rate for the three phases of the national licensure exam. The national average is 95 percent.

n The College of Education ranks first inMissouri in the number of certificates issued annually to teaching professionals.

n Express Scripts is the largest corporation in the country with its headquarters located on a college campus. ExpressScripts has 2,500 employees working on the UMSL campus.

n The Whitney Harris World Ecology Centerat UMSL is the nation’s largest and mostdiverse program in biology conservation.Academic and research partners includethe Missouri Botanical Garden and Saint Louis Zoo.

n Since its first Fulbright Scholar, graduate student William Maltby in 1966, UMSL has had 34 faculty membersand 23 students earn Fulbright Scholar-ships. Women have earned 32 percent of the faculty Fulbrights and 65 percent of the student Fulbrights.
