J Ch Anderson Perf ( ) (Popular) Label Biuro Wydawnicze Ruch Artist Jan Marcin Szancer Notes This is an audio postcard that plays (at 33rpm) a popular Polish song with orchestra backing and bumpa bumpa rhythm Not knowing Polish it was not possible to ascertain whether the song has anything to do with the Snow Queen (Polish title Kroacutelowa Śniegu) The postcard carries one of several illustrations which the famous Polish Illustrator Jan Marcin Szancer did for an edition of Hans Christian Andersonrsquos The Snow Queen The blue tinted drawing shows the Snow Queen sitting on her throne in her ice cave palace which is filled with huge ice stalactites At her feet a boy Kai (or Kay) tries to reconstruct a puzzle ldquoKai is engaged in the task that the Snow

This striking surrealistic painting of a fantasy karst landscape on a grand scale was possibly inspired by the fengcong karst of Guangxi Province in southern China The jagged peaks gorges depressions and cliffs would seem to justify this Briefly described from top to bottom and left to right ndash Under a cloudy sky lit by

the sun shining through a hole in the clouds we look down from the karst heights to a green valley and a distant sea On the left high sheer white cliffs tower and opposite on the right are more high sheer white cliffs while between them in the distance arches a perfect white arch In the left middle ground a series of waterfalls cascade down and drop into a narrow limestone gorge Farther to the right a small stream erodes its way down to fall into what looks like a spectacular collapse depression which could be a tiankeng In the right middle ground is a relic of a huge limestone natural arch where the central portion of the span has been dissolved away (A detail of this natural arch is used for the cover of Volume 7) At the extreme right middle ground is a sheer walled crater lit from the inside by a glowing orange light seemingly indicating a volcano In the foreground from left to right are trees some turning to autumn colors the small stream a green pasture and a foot path that winds its way through the thick forest on the right crosses in front and follows along the right bank of the stream One human figure wearing a conical hat and carrying a walking stick can be seen on this path accompanied by a large dog This small solitary figure dressed as a Chinese peasant would seem to orient the whole painting towards the magnificent Chinese karst This painting is reproduced on the back cover of all twelve LPs and CDs in a set of Classical and New Age music released on the Polydor amp Deutsche Grammophon labels There were also Polydor and Deutsche Grammophon CD releases of ten of these albums and the same detail reproductions were used on the CD front covers The double compilation New Age LP album ldquoStille ndash Sounds of Silencerdquo was listed here as No 6 between Vol 5 and 6 of the Musik Zur Ruhe - Music For Meditation series because its Polydor catalog number precedes the five following albums from that series Ref Fengcong karst UIS Commission on Karst Hydrology amp Speleogenesis speleogenesisinfo

Notes The front and back covers (including the foldout 6-page liner notes) carries an illustration showing a winged dragon perched on top of a stalagmite ready to take flight Nine fainter sequenced images of this dragon show it as it flies from right to left through a huge cave chamber decorated by enormous stalagmites and columns These formations bring to mind the piled-dish stalagmites of the Aven Armand or the Aven drsquoOrgnac in France They also are quite reminiscent of the Roger Dean cover art for the Yes album Classic (see under Fantasy Picture Covers ndash Roger Dean)
