Known problems

General

• Various operations may slow down significantly while the GUI is transferring large files overFTP. This is due to the fact that the file transfer consumes the network bandwidth requiredfor interacting with the server. For best results avoid transferring large files during the showor while making significant changes to the configuration, e.g. while loading a show file.

Server

• Disconnecting USB audio card freezes the layers with audio playback.

• When playing back inputs, if you disconnect the cable and then reconnect it, the "cabledisconnected" error message persists. The workaround is to click stop and then play again.

• When the media file has audio in it, the FPS control appears enabled, even though it’s notpossible to adjust this value.

• It’s not recommended that you overwrite files that are playing on Octo through an FTPconnection as this is not supported and might result in the server crashing.

• Using multiple display devices with different refresh rates is not recommended as this maycause stuttering.

• The server can only play (non-PRKL) files that have smaller resolution than the Max layersize specified in Configurator > Display Config > Advanced. This limitation doesn’t affectPRKL playback.

• DPX image sequences support only 24bit and 10bit rgb (gbrp10le) colors. Other color spacesmight cause havoc.

• Seeking and frame stepping with paused video only seeks / steps to closest keyframe.

• ProRes implementation doesn’t support alpha channel.

• 10 bit colors only work when display is configured for auto mode.

• Forcing Dual-Link DVI resolution from 4xHDMI or 4xDP connectors outputting DVI signalcan cause system to become unstable.

• DisplayPort connectors need to be connected before starting up the system for them to workproperly.

Commander and Player

• Auto is only permitted target file value for sequences. This setting appears in transfer localfiles dialog.

• Remember last server browser path option doesn’t work with Inputs folder.

• When dragging media in Media Library, media must be dropped into slot and not betweenslots.

• Macro name is not permitted to contain dot character

• Font sizes smaller than 10 and larger than 18 are not supported. Some fonts can render textnon-visible. If font selector preview doesn’t show valid preview, do not use the font. Fontstyle settings (bold, italics) is not honored by all texts.

• Display graph resize is disabled when relative transformation mode is enabled.

• Display graph resize is disabled when multiple non-grouped displays are selected.

• Display graph resize works incorrectly when display group with non-uniform sizes is resized.

Commander changes

• Cues and Cue Stacks can now have macros. Please note that this is a separate macro conceptfrom the layer macros. Macros can be accessed from contextual menu on Cues in Cue Listand Cue Stacks in Cue Stack List. Cue macros are executed when cue is executed. Cue stackhas entry end exit macro. Entry macro is executed when stack is loaded into a playbackand exit macro when stack is released from a playback. Pre-defined macro templates includeTrigger cue, Trigger playback and Trigger network command. Custom macros can also bedefined. Please note that if any macro is defined, saved showfile can no longer be loaded witholder Commander version. Showfiles containing macros are supported only in Commander2.6.0 or later. (#4464)

• Text can be added to media library. Under server files, new folder called Generators can befound. Drag Text generator into media library and a dialog opens. Enter text and specifytext settings. Texts already added to media library can be edited from contextual menu.(#4425)

• Web page can now be automatically reloaded. When adding or editing web page, reloadoption can be entered to automatically reload web page at specified intervals. (#4512)

• Non-optimal GPU pixel space is automatically optimized after 5 second delay. If Commanderdetects that pixel space is not optimal, Commander will automatically execute optimize. Thisfeature can be disabled or customized in Options, under General Options. (#4437)

• Minimum length of image sequence increased to 49 frames. If sequence contains less than 49frames, it cannot be used and will not be detected as image sequence. (#4499)

• Layer composition graph can now be opened in a separate window. To open separate graph,select Layers Graph from Window-menu or graph icon from main toolbar. (#4434)

Release 2.5.0

This version includes support for Web page playback. Server is able to display web pages butsound or interaction is not supported. Web pages can be located on the Internet, server on a localnetwork or stored locally. Server default IP-address is now 192.168.2.140.

This release changes cue programming:

• Play / Pause / Stop, media selection and other integer based controls will be applied at thestart of fade period. Earlier they were applied at the middle of fade. (#4494)

• Cues that have all of the timings at zero (wait, fade and hold) will no longer wait for triggerif the cue triggering is configured as automatic. (#4495)

• Web page playback is supported. Multiple web pages can be running at same time. Webpage background transparency is supported. (#4049)

Solarger values means more of the webpage is visible. URL cannot be edited once set. To editURL, remove and re-add Web page to Media library. Interaction with the web page is notsupported. • Video stream media is now supported. Video stream can be found from Server files panelunder Network folder. Drag video stream into Media library and enter URL. Only URLsbeginning with rtsp:// and rtp:// are supported. URL cannot be edited once set. To editURL, remove and re-add Video stream to Media library. For optimal streaming quality,experimentation with available options and video stream server settings might be required.(#4394)

• Display wizard now supports auto display size. It uses display resolutions instead of manuallyspecified display sizes. When auto size is used, bezel correction can be specified in pixels.(#4336)

• Display wizard edge blending size option is no longer available, use Edge Blending panel aftercreating the blending group. (#4336)

• Display wizard can now be used to apply display overlap when displays are overlapping.Displays are assumed to be laid from left to right, from top to bottom. (#4336)

• Fonts can be changed in Options, General, Fonts -options panel. Primary font is used formost texts. Large font is used for some graphs. Release 2.4.2

This release fixes two major bugs: 2.4.1 broke some still image formats and 2.4.0 made simplemanual ip settings sometimes fail to validate.

This changes play / pause / stop handling. Server now remembers what was the last play/pause/stopcommand send by user and uses that when changing medias. This makes system behave more log-ically when using still images, media end action pause or with broken medias.

Release 2.2.0

Version 2.2.0 is a major version update. This version includes support for Picturall Hiisi MediaPlayer, Picturall’s new 4K video player product, and a new Picturall Player user interface for thePicturall Hiisi. In addition to these, this version also includes new features and enhancements toPicturall media servers.

Server side of this 2.2 series is same for both the video player products (Hiisi) and media server(Octo, Broadcast, Quadro) products but they have different user interfaces. Media server productsuse Picturall Commander and player products use Picturall Player.

In this release, we have completely rewritten Picturall’s playback logic to allow extremely fastimage sequence playback and in/out points for medias. While doing it we have also improvedmany aspects of the old playback logic to be more robust (f.e. layer / MTC synchronization) andfuture proof.

Start action might not work due to network configuration or changesmade to it or because the wake on lan support is not enabled on the server BIOS. Release 2.2.0

Version 2.2.0 is a major version update. This version includes support for Picturall Hiisi MediaPlayer, Picturall’s new 4K video player product, and a new Picturall Player user interface for thePicturall Hiisi. In addition to these, this version also includes new features and enhancements toPicturall media servers.

Server side of this 2.2 series is same for both the video player products (Hiisi) and media server(Octo, Broadcast, Quadro) products but they have different user interfaces. Media server productsuse Picturall Commander and player products use Picturall Player.

In this release, we have completely rewritten Picturall’s playback logic to allow extremely fastimage sequence playback and in/out points for medias. While doing it we have also improvedmany aspects of the old playback logic to be more robust (f.e. layer / MTC synchronization) andfuture proof.

Major new features

• You can now play back image sequences

• New Picturall Player user interface is now available for use with Picturall Hiisi video player

• You can now set in / out points for medias.

• Media scrubbing was added. Seeking media or dragging an in/out point when media ispaused previews the position on server output.

Image filename must be constantlength and contain increasing order number. Filename can include arbitary name but it mustbe same on each file. Sequence must start with order number 0 or 1. Sequence ends whenthere is no next order number. Audio file can be attached to sequence in Media Library.Select sequence and open media contextual menu to select audio file. • Wake-On-Lan functionality was added. It allows the server to be shutdown or started from theuser interface. Starting and shutting down the server can be done from connection contextualmenu or from the Toolbar buttons. Starting a server becomes enabled after first succesfulconnection to the server. The server and user interface must be on same network for thisfunctionality to work. Start action might not work due to network configuration or changesmade to it or because the wake on lan support is not enabled on the server BIOS. • New frame-based time format (hh:mm:ss:ff). The time format was previously second-based,the new time format displays subsecond precision (hh:mm:ss.sss). Time format can be se-lected in general application options. (#3790)

• Layer macros were added. Macro is a snapshot of current active values in the selected layer.After snapshot has been saved, it can be applied to other layers with a single click. Macrocontains all values from selected categories. Including/excluding a specific single value is notpossible. Macros are stored locally in each Commander installation. • Files on the server can be now encoded with a single click. New Encode to actions canbe found from server files contextual menu. Edge blending system has been updated. Display sizes are now automatically calculated fromblend amounts. A short example for making a three-projector blend of displays 1,2 and 3:

– Adjust keystone to make projector images into equal height rectangles that partly over-lap. Use "Display borders" test image.

Video inputs are used by playing back file with name video0.v4l2, where 0 can be numberfrom 0 to 3 and it denotes the video channel to use.

Only single layer can play single video input at time. If same video channel is used ondifferent layer error message is displayed on the screen.

• Support for HD-SDI capture board

SDI input works by playing file with special name: format.active_silicon, where formatis input format from the following table:Format string Resolution Descriptionpal_sd 720x576 Pal SD (interlaced)720p 1280x720 720 progressive1080p 1920x1080 Full HD 1080 progressive1080i 1920x1080 Full HD 1080 interlaced

• Support for Midi timecode (MTC) and Midi machine control (MMC)

MTC and MMC support require same audio device as our audio support. Midi cable isconnected to Midi In port on audio device.

Usage from Octo command line:

For each layer you have syncsource parameter in mediactrl control. When you set thatparameter to 255, that layer is synchronized to MTC and MMC. For example:set s1 mediactrl syncsource="255"

You can control timecode offset by setting parameter offset in control sync on object mtc.Offset is specified in nanoseconds, so to set offset 01:00:00:00, use command:

set mtc sync offset="3600000000000"

You can read current MTC timecode from parameter timecode in control sync on objectmtc. It’s also specified in nanoseconds.

• Support for layer synchronization

Layer synchronization allows to synchronize playback of multiple layers. When layer is syn-chronized, audio is disabled for that layer.

Usage from Octo command line:

This works by setting the syncsource parameter in mediactrl control for slave layer to thelayer number of master layer.

For example to set layer 2 to synchronize to layer 1:set s2 mediactrl syncsource="1"

• PRKL codec quality improved

Requires re-encoding the medias. Old PRKL medias work, but quality is improved only onnewly encoded medias.

• PRKL Seeking now works

Requires re-encoding the medias. Seeking doesn’t work with old PRKL medias.

• Triplebuffering is now optional

Triplebuffering can be set using console configurator.

Triplebuffering is used by graphics card driver to smooth out the drawing times betweenframes. Triplebuffering increases system performance noticeably but increases also latencyby 1 display frame (16ms for 60Hz displays).

So if you are not using live inputs, you should always leave triplebuffering enabled.





If you are using live inputs and can stand the performance penalty caused by triplebuffering,you can disable triplebuffering and get latency lowered by one frame.

• enum_objects now sends two messages to UI:

– Number of objects: message id: 19, content: number of objects available

– Object description: message id: 15, content: description of different objects

• play command now accepts file names with spaces

• Fixed bug in CITP implementation that could prevent thumbnail sending if media librarieshave empty elements in them.

Commander

• UI support for audio volume

• Added support for HDV input through firewire.

Currently only Grass Valley ADVC-HD50 is supported, but other HDV devices might work.Warning: this HDV input has very long latency, 500 - 1000 ms. Its intended use is to inputcomputer generated content (mostly powerpoint).

HDV input can be used by playing back media with filename: anything.fw_hdv

HDV device must be connected on server startup for this to work. Device doesn’t recover ifit is temporarily disconnected while playing.

• Added alpha support to PRKL codec

By selecting PRKL Alpha codec from Commander you can encode PRKL files with alphachannel. It requires that input video must have alpha channel. It’s recommented to use PNGsequence encapsulated into mp4 container format as input.





• Configuration settings can now be made through LCD panel on the front of the Octo chassis.Server is rebooted after saving settings!

• Implemented timing for command line set command. New format:

set object_name ctrlname [time=<time>] paramname=pvalue[,param2name=p2val[,...]]

So for example:

set gll1 layer time=1.5 intensity=0.0set gll1 layer time=1.5 intensity=1.0,x=1.0

• Implemented soft timing mode for medias. This mode handles almost exact timing (f.e. 29.97FPS material on 60Hz display) smoothly, but video clock may drift in long videos. Largestpossible clock drift caused by soft timing is limited to 7%. If media has incompatible fpswith display (f.e. 25fps media on 60Hz screen), soft timing mode falls back to using exacttiming mode. Soft timing mode is now the default timing mode.

Timing mode can be selected from Commander or from commend line:

set d1 layer0 timing=1

where layer1 points to layer 1 and layer32 to layer 32.

There are two timing modes. Mode 0 is Soft timing mode described above and mode 1 isExact timing mode, where timing is done purely based on video time stamps.

Commander

• Implemented continous rotation mode. It uses upper and lower range from DMX channel.For usage, look at DMX chart.

• Changed DMX chart: Scaling updated to reflect the state on the server. Actual scalingbehavior is not changed, so old shows are not affected. DMX profiles based on the old DMXchart should be updated!!!

• Changed rotation behavior to match DMX Chart. Might break old DMX controlled showsif they use rotation!!!





• Fixed serious bug, which could result in crashing under extreme load

Commander

• Removed a feature where encoding was accidentally possible for still images also.

• File format support for tif/tiff added.

• Keystone setting is also read when loading the show from file.

• Exit confirmation dialog had a wrong title.

• Aspect ratio is supported in macros.

• Export to server dialog UI message fixed.

• Connect to server seemed to always succeed even if it did not. Now error message dialog isshown when server is not available.
