Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, especially with baby boomers. A cross between tennis and ping pong, pickleball is played on a hard surface the size of a badminton court. It is played either indoors on a wooden floor or outdoors on a tennis court, making pickleball a year-round sport. Games are played as doubles or singles, with doubles the most popular.

The game requires quickness and finesse, as well as excellent hand-eye coordination but less mobility than tennis. It also requires players to concentrate on scoring and server rotation. This all makes pickleball ideal for older players, especially former tennis and paddleball players, who are looking to stay sharp in body and mind.

Perseverance. Grace. Pickleball.

The Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania actively promotes the sport of pickleball as a therapeutic exercise for those diagnosed with the disease. While any exercise is beneficial to Parkinson’s patients, the competition and camaraderie of pickleball makes it attractive to those struggling to stay on a steady exercise routine. Many play religiously as therapy, to suppress symptoms, allowing them to play long after they are diagnosed.

Agility. Teamwork. Overcoming adversity. Pickleball is the perfect activity for those living with Parkinson’s to help them persevere and build a renewed sense of purpose. The Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania seeks to make pickleball the official sport of the Parkinson’s community.
