FARMLAND PRESERVATION PROGRAM UPDATES

This past November, the Ohio Department of Agriculture announced that 10 land trusts, three counties, one township, and nine Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) will receive funding to help preserve farmland across the state. Funding for the program is derived from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, which was first approved by voters in 2008.

The Warren County SWCD was one of the organizations approved to accept applications from landowners who wish to permanently preserve their farmland. More than $158,000 will be made available in this funding round just for Warren County landowners. The program, which is voluntary and competitive, allows landowners to sell easements on their farms to the State of Ohio. This requires that the farm remain permanently in agricultural production, supporting the state's largest industry. Selected

farms must be 40 or more acres, actively engaged in farming, participate in the Current Agricultural Use Valuation program, demonstrate good stewardship of the land, have support from local governments, and not lay directly in the path of development. Landowners may use the proceeds of the easement in any way they wish. When combined with easements from all programs, 354 family farms in 54 counties have collectively preserved more than 59,000 acres in agricultural production. The application period opens January 15

th and will

end April 15th, 2016. Interested landowners should

An initiative of the District is to encourage and support the use of

cover crops. The benefits of cover crops include reduced soil loss,

improved tilth, increased water infiltration, healthier soil microbiol-

ogy and earthworm populations, weed suppression, and minimiza-

tion of nutrient loss. The District has promoted a fall cover crop fly-

on the last two years and would like to improve and expand upon

the program. This year, we are looking into the possibility of using

a highboy seeder for seeding into standing crops to aid in timing,

seed placement, and better germination. We are currently gauging

interest in the 2016 cover crop program and would like producers

to give some thought as to how they could incorporate cover crops

into their crop rotation.

TREE SALE REMINDERS

The seedlings are bare root stock. Each packet is dipped into a preservative gel to keep the roots moist and then placed into a plastic bag. The seedlings should be planted as quickly as possible after pick up to ensure their vitality. Seedlings are generally 2 to 4 years old. Each package can easily be carried in one hand. Several packages will fit into an ordinary paper grocery bag. If you are unable to pick up your seedlings, please send someone or phone the office at (513) 695-1337 to make special pick up arrangements. Orders not picked up within one week after the original pick up dates will be considered abandoned. A phone call to our office will usually result in a satisfactory alternate pick up plan.

There is no limit on the number of packets you may purchase. We will accept orders through March 25, 2016 or until our supply is exhausted. Payment can be made by check, cash, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa. We reserve the right to make minor changes in stock if some species of trees become unavailable. The battle to achieve and maintain healthy rivers and streams is an ongoing

effort in the world of natural resource advocates. Conservation projects

aimed at promoting and protecting water quality are typically implemented by

a political jurisdiction, such as a township, city or county, thereby diluting

water quality benefits as opposed to focusing the projects where they can do

the most good.

Taking a watershed view of restoration and protection allows for a more

efficient approach to address water quality issues, improved collaboration

and stakeholder involvement, and local support. To better address

impairments and to serve as an instrument for watershed wide conservation

planning in the Great Miami River watershed, fourteen Ohio Soil & Water

Conservation Districts joined together to form the Miami River Watershed

Joint Board of Supervisors. For the past three years, the Joint Board has

been working with the Miami Conservancy District and waste water

treatment plants to reduce nutrient pollution through a pilot nutrient credit

trading program. At a recent Joint Board meeting, it was decided to expand

the Board’s mission beyond nutrient credit trading. This move allows the

Joint Board to plan and prioritize water quality projects throughout the entire

watershed. The Joint Board will seek out grant funding to work with landowners and other partners to plan

restoration and protection projects throughout the Great Miami River watershed.
