With its deep concern for the environment, the

Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) –

SOCSARGEN Chapter held a tree maintenance activity

on February 6, 2010 along National

Highway, General Santos City.

The mentioned activity was led by the

PIChE – SOCSARGEN Chapter

president, Engr. Jeffrey A. Jesswani,

and joined by PIChE members from

the various sectors. It was initiated

not only to inculcate to the commu-

nity the importance of caring for the environment but

also to promote camaraderie and strengthen relationships

among members of the chapter.

The trees were previously planted in collaboration

with the Community Environment

and Natural Resources Office

(CENRO). The trees were wa-

tered, cleared of bushes and

shrubs. The tree guards were also

fixed. Several seedlings of blue

palm trees were planted to replace

those that already withered.

Brett Laudato, a chapter member, said “As

Chemical Engineers, we should be

on the frontline in protecting and

preserving the environment for fu-

ture generations.”

This activity was conducted as part

of the chapter’s commitment of

continuous monitoring and sustain-

ability of activities and projects

within SOCSARGEN.

To Promote Chemical Engineering

Campaign Drive Done in

Different HS

ecause of the dwindling enrollment data for

Chemical Engineering course in different Uni-

versities in Mindanao, an aggressive series of cam-

paign were conducted in different high schools by

PIChE-SOCSARGEN. The target participants were

graduating 4th year stu-

dents and 3rd year stu-

dents. The aim is to

give the students an

idea as to what chemi-

cal engineering is all

about, and to encourage

them to take it as their

future career.

Three (3) schools were already visited to date,

all in SOCSARGEN area. The schools were: San

Lorenzo Ruiz Academy of Polomolok (SLRAP),

Irineo L. Santiago National High School (ISNHS),

and Mindanao State University-Gensan (MSU).

The program for the drive includes a video

presentation about chemical engineering made by the

National PIChE and inspirational messages by fellow

members.

Mrs. Bernadita Totesora, principal of MSU-

Gensan said she was very happy and delighted that

professional organizations like PIChE-SOCSARGEN

had the opportunity to visit their school because it

will inspire their students to study more, to take on

science and engineering courses in college, and to

help in nation-building.

Message f r om t he Pres iden t

As more opportunities open up for chemical engineers in our geographical area, our membership becomes more diverse and sharing among members become more interesting and excit-ing. For every activity that we have, time spent and extra effort is not felt when there is enjoyment and strong bonding among the

members.

One measure of maturity of our organization is indicated by the readiness and willingness of the younger members to sustain and bring the group to higher levels of achievement. With further push, it seems our organization is on the right track in this as-

pect.

Congratulations to our chapter for another year of success-

ful activities. Let’s be proud as chemical engineers!

M es s age f ro m t he Nat ion a l Board o f Di rec to r

Greetings fellow Chemical Engineers!

First of all, I would like to congratulate the Editorial Board of this publication for coming up with the chapter’s very own official newsletter. A newsletter is very helpful in disseminating information and updates to all members wherever they are in the globe, especially with our current infor-mation technology. I hope this maiden issue will serve as an encourage-ment and inspiration to future members to continue the hard work done in

this publication.

Secondly, I would like to congratulate all the members for success-fully launching the National Chemical Engineering Week in General Santos City. The line-up of activities for the event proves that the members are very active and enthusiastic in their goal of promoting the chemical engi-

neering profession.

Third and lastly, I encourage all the members to contribute to nation-building by sharing our resources, skills and talents to the community we belong. As chemical engineers, we all have acquired the appropriate skills to help solve problems in the arena of environmental, social, and cultural aspects of our society. We were trained by our Universities on practical problem-solving skills, thus we can contribute more and help make it

[society] better.

Congratulations to the officers and members of this chapter for the

job very well done!
