Yet, every time she saw me running around, she checked in to make sure I was doing okay. Set-up on Thursday went well, with plenty of hands to make light work. The Breed Show kicked off Friday with no problems (or loose horses), and we were teeming with people to help keep things moving. Friday afternoon the Performance classes began, and things started to get interesting. We real- ized we had to caravan all of our judges, scribes, stewards, and runners down to the new Infield rings with one of our golf carts out of commission. We recruited Diane Stanley, our wonder- ful Technical Delegate, to assist, which she continued to do throughout the weekend. Transportation became a theme of my weekend. The start of the rings, lunch breaks, and end of rings became “all hands on deck” times for many of our volunteers. Dianne Boyd, our talented Show Manager, pitched in if I was trapped in the office. We also had intrepid golf cart drivers and runners, who found some very ingenious ways to transport our volun- teers, and get back and forth to the rings all weekend. Our stewards kept busy, too. Keeping an eye not only on the competition and warm up rings, but also on the extensive paths between the rings and barns made for some wonderful moments, as horse after horse crested the hills. Even though spectators could not get as close to the rings, in cars, as they would have liked, I do not think I heard a single complaint from a competitor. We had many wonderful rides throughout the weekend, and I don’t believe we had anyone fail an equipment check! I do not feel like I even need to mention the excellent scoring teams and the scribes, they all performed their tasks efficiently and we had very few send backs for unsigned tests, illegible marks, etc. They made my life easier, and I am so appreciative of all the time they put in over the weekend. To end my weekend, my super efficient take down crew had hospitality packed up before the rings closed and were chomping at the bit to do more. Unfortunately, our scorers did not want to be packed up before the rings finished! All in all, we had a great weekend, including a lot of learning by all. I want to express my appreciation to all of the volunteers, and their flexibility as we developed the plan for the new rings and set up, you are all rockstars in my book, and I would be happy to work with you again. VADA NOVA BOARD MEETINGJune 11, 2018

Twelve Board Members were present, three were excused. There was one guest.Meeting commenced at 7:20Minutes: May meeting minutes were accepted by the Board.Treasurer’s Report: Due to the proximity of the meeting and the June show, there was no treasurer’s report at this time.Licensed Shows: Dianne Boyd reported that the show went very well, and there were many compliments from competitors, volunteers, and judges. There was a benefit to having a smaller show- everyone could adjust to the new layout & configuration of the rings. The weekend trailers had to park by Gate 1 due to the limited parking space but for the most part this worked out fine. There were some complaints about having to park trailers in the grass. Next year we will hire the Ruritans again to help with the parking; it was almost too much this year for the few volunteers that were available. Having the warm up areas right next to the rings is working out well- the horses are never alone, they warm up on the same footing and the fencing provides a good visual as well as physical barrier. The judges were happy with the arrangements- although some were concerned about how they’d get proper shelter if there had been bad weather. We will need to have more golf carts in the future because of the distances to travel between the rings and the office. Also, the EMT should have one available since trucks can’t be driven to the rings. Dilly suggested getting someone to sponsor a shuttle to transport people around the show grounds. There were several new volunteers, which is nice to see. Everyone did very well, even the newbies! The licensed show committee will have to figure out the number of stewards that will be needed for each ring; there were actually too many on Friday. Signs will have to be made to remind people to pick up their horses’ poop - “See Something, Scoop Something”. We will also have to figure out the best way to keep the poop picked up after hours when people are schooling.Numbers of entries have been down at all area shows. Dianne B. suggested changing the pricing structure a bit when we have two 1-day shows, to make the costs more understandable. The way we have done it in the past leads to some confusion for compet-itors. We will have to have all fees explained so that everyone knows what they’re paying for. There also needs to be better communication- signs- explaining all new information.Sheli said that she’d like to order table covers with our logo on them to “professionalize” the awards and candy tables. After some discussion we decided it made sense to order three. Jessie

made the motion, Anne seconded it, and all approved. The Committee needs to consider and make a recommendation to the board on whether or not we’ll to continue to do the breed show. Many classes had only 1 horse entered. Without the breed show, we could offer more Performance classes and open those up to more competitors. All contracts will be done via Docusign in the future. This elim-inates the need for tracking down misplaced contracts, waiting for contracts, etc. The cost for the Professional package is $200 per year. Judges will be able to sign their contracts electroni-cally, and Diann C. will be able to keep track of these. Jessie moved to sign up for this professional version of Docusign, Anne seconded it and the Board voted unanimously to accept the motion.Membership/Newsletter: As of tonight, Barb Pickering said there were 228 members, 79 of whom paid through PayPal. There are still 3 Show Pass holders. Rachel reiterated that any-one can write an article for the Newsletter as well as submitting a “Spotlight” column on a member or someone closely affiliated with VADA/Nova, such as our show vet. Alison suggested we also do a sponsor spotlight.Barb proposed having electronic membership cards instead of paper ones. Most people don’t ever use their paper ones, and all the necessary information will be available to show secretaries electronically. Important dates and information all be available on the “Thank You for Joining” notice. Diann C. made the motion to accept Barb’s proposal and Rachel seconded it. The Board accepted the motion unanimously. It will also be noted on the information page that by being a member of Vada Nova, you are also a member of VADA & a GMO member of USDF.Volunteer opportunities for Board members need to be revisited to be sure everyone is participating in some capacity. The reworked ad for VTO was discussed and accepted for publi-cation in the newsletter.Schooling Shows: An assistant or co-secretary is needed to assist Tiffany Turley with the August Show. Diann L. and Anne both volunteered to assist Tiffany and Alison volunteered to handle the scheduling. Diann C. also offered to help. Everyone will coordinate to figure out how best to assign responsibilities.A privacy notification for members will be added to the website. There were 1255 likes on Face Book with 1248 follows. There was a boost of 1302 people in June, and 118 Posts (shares & comments). Our Face Book site is reaching a lot of people.

Meeting ended at 9:25 p.m.Respectfully submitted,Diann Landau, Secretary

Dianne reported that there are changes that need to be made to the prize list, so in conjunction with those edits the closing date will be moved back to July 2nd. We are at 62 entries right now. The breed show is light, and we need to push it. We have to find another judge due to injury. We’ve added an FEI eventing TOC. The facility is in good shape with a good crew. The com-

Spotlight on Charlie MuscoBy Diann Landau

This month’s spotlight is on Charlie Musco, our intrep-id announcer for our licensed shows. Charlie currently lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he’s been for over 30 years. He was raised in suburban Boston, and he attended Bowdoin College in Maine. He’s been married since 2015. Charlie has been an equestrian professional who works for different individuals & organizations around the U.S.. In his spare time he travels the world. His pas-sion for horses has been life long, even though he was the only member of his family who has the affliction! He had a short connection to riding as a child, but pur-sued it eagerly after college graduation when he started taking lessons from someone who had a riding school near the high school where he was teaching Latin and English. Within a year he had bought his first horse and started competing in eventing. A year later Char-lie went to England to train full time, returning to the States two years later. He worked for a few years at the Potomac Horse Center in Maryland, during which time he received his USEF judges and TD’s licenses in both dressage and eventing. After moving to North

Carolina he set up his own business. Charlie officiates at competitions throughout the US. He also has com-peted many horses in both disciplines, and announces at many competitions throughout the country. In 2017 he was involved in approximately 35 competitions in some capacity or other.Charlie says that fortunately he started his training in both eventing and dressage simultaneously and has al-ways felt “tuned in” to both disciplines. He has always been involved with both when officiating, training and announcing. There are a small number of officials who are involved in both disciplines. He says that everyone would agree that dressage training is the key to suc-cess even if you’re involved with eventing and show jumping. It’s fascinating to watch the incredible rise of the US participation in dressage, Charlie says- both in competitions throughout the US and internationally.Charlie said that his heaviest involvement which was the most satisfying with one particular horse was with Val Russell’s Grundstern- that he trained and rode through the dressage levels to become a rather success-ful Small Tour competitor.Next time you hear an expert announcer- someone who can pronounce some of the trickier horse and rid-er’s names- most likely it will be Charlie Musco.
