    Product Information Lift Shaft Ventilation

    PI/5/3/EN/

Heat loss through the lift shaft Many lift shafts currently represent a gap in heat insulation: non-closable openings in the top of the shaft lead to an uncontrolled cooldown of individual floors.

Through the joints in the lift shaft doors, the warm air flows unhindered from the heated building into the shaft. In addi-tion, the air in the shaft is heated through the walls. This heated air rises in the shaft due to the chimney effect and ultimately escapes through the permanent openings at the top of the shaft. These openings at the top of the shaft are necessary to draw off smoke and toxic fumes in case of a fire. In addition, the necessary air quality within the shaft is guaranteed by these openings. During regular ope-ration, however, there is no reason to do not close these openings.

    Problem zone: lift shaft

Solution Energy savingsIn a four-storey building, a pressure of 8 Pa arises in 2m-high elevator shaft due to an upward thermal flow at an outside temperature of 4C and an indoor temperature of 20C. Through a shaft opening of 3535 cm and backflow openings (of the same size in sum) in the cellar, the air flows at a speed .5 m/s. At an outside temperature of 4C, this air flow of over 600 m/h generates a power dissipation of 3 kW, which corre-sponds to a heat loss of 250 kWh a month. At an oil price of CHF 75.00 per 00 litres, costs to the amount of CHF ,28.00 a year result. In regular operation, these openings are closed and the heating oil saved.

Ventilation dampers The openings in the lift shaft can be closed using automatic ventilation dampers. At temperatures e.g. above 35 to 40C, the dampers open, under 30 to 25C, they close. The dam-pers are regulated via adjustable thermostats at the top of the shaft (or in the power room). The main entry level (near by the fire department key switch or close to the lift holding position in case of a fire) and the power room, both are equipped with a manual switch to open the dampers. In case of a power failure or intentional release, the dampers open automatically. When electricity is shut down, the dampers remain open.

The supply lines for the damper actuation and shaft lighting can be installed in a protective tube. The seal tightness of the dampers has no special requirements; no fire dampers are required. In case of the risk of the formation of condensate, dampers with rubber lip seals and heat-insulated damper blades should be mounted.

As a leading manufacturer of ventilation components and systems, TROX HESCO offers an optimised system for the ventilation of lift shafts as a complete, comprehensive system.
