About the ProgramThe Mount Sinai Medical Center has been a leading institutionfor the management of head and neck disease for nearly half acentury. The Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Surgical Centerprovides each patient with a team of nationally recognizedphysicians and surgeons that works together to provide state-of-the-art curative management of tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, skull base, and thyroid gland.

The Multidisciplinary Team Approach toCancer ManagementCurative management of tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, skullbase, and thyroid gland typically requires multimodalitytherapy that may include surgery, radiation therapy, and/orchemotherapy. The Multidisciplinary Center provides patientswith a coordinated schedule of consultations with each memberof the team during a single visit. This model is designed tooptimize care and limit return visits.

The Center provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care forpatients afflicted with head and neck tumors. Each patient willhave access to top physicians and surgeons with the followingspecialties:

Head and neck cancer surgeryHead and neck reconstructive surgeryThyroid and parathyroid surgerySkull base surgeryNeurosurgeryRadiation oncologyMedical oncologyOral surgery and dentistryEndocrinologySpeech and language pathologyCytopathology and surgical pathology Diagnostic and interventional radiologyPhysical and occupational rehabilitationNutritional support services

The Latest Research and Surgical TechniquesMount Sinai’s multidisciplinary head and neck cancer team hasgained national recognition for its expertise and innovation inthe management of head and neck cancer. Many patients haveconcerns about their appearance following head and neckcancer surgery. Our expert team works to cure patients andpreserve quality of life using the most advanced minimallyinvasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, as well ascomplex reconstructive procedures.

In addition to a tradition of clinical excellence and coordinatedexpertise of its teams of surgeons, physicians, and support staff, the Center offers innovative clinical trials for the managementof rare and recurrent diseases. The research laboratories are alsoactively investigating new methods for treatment of head andneck tumors, and many basic science projects are dedicated toimproving early detection and intervention for patients withdiseases of the head and neck.

Robotic Head and Neck SurgerySurgeons at The Mount Sinai Head and Neck Surgery Centerare using robotic surgery to achieve curative treatment of oraland laryngeal tumors without the need for external incisions. While a surgeon sits at a console directly controlling the robot, the robot arm extends small instruments through the mouthand manipulates them. The robotic technology allows thesurgeon the ability to perform the surgery using a highpowered three-dimensional camera, minimally invasivesurgical instruments, and laser technology. Use of the robotallows our surgeons greater visualization, dexterity, andprecision during an operation, as well as the ability to performprocedures in a much less invasive fashion. Originallydeveloped by the military for remote surgery in the battlefield, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has proven beneficial indecreasing surgical morbidity, length of hospital stay, andimproving postoperative swallowing and speech.

Endoscopic and Minimally InvasiveManagement of Tumors of the Head and Neck Some tumors can be treated with nonsurgical therapy, butwhen surgery is required, the head and neck team at MountSinai is skilled in minimally invasive techniques. Members ofthe surgical team are able to remove tumors of the larynx, pharynx, thyroid, parathyroid, and skull base with minimal

access, while preserving the voice and swallowing capabilities.Using endoscopic techniques, surgeons remove many of thesetumors without incisions. They also utilize the cutting-edgetechnology of the surgical robot in order to gain access todifficult anatomic areas.

Tumors of the Skull BaseTumors of the skull base are managed by head and neck, otologic, and neurosurgical teams. Using advanced technology, surgeons apply minimally invasive and endoscopic techniquesto achieve complete resections with minimal, or in some cases,no external incisions.

Using a combination of endoscopic techniques and minimallyinvasive surgical approaches, the skull base team at Mount Sinaihas perfected the resection of tumors of the skull base withoutthe need for facial incisions. Endoscopic technology enables thesurgical team to remove select skull base tumors throughtransnasal approaches. The team also offers expertise in facialreanimation following facial nerve injury.

Advances in Thyroid and Parathyroid SurgeryTumors of the thyroid and parathyroid are also managed usingminimally invasive techniques. Preoperative localization ofparathyroid tumors and the use of intraoperative parathyroidhormone monitoring allow our surgeons to perform thyroid andparathyroid surgery through very small incisions. Procedures cancommonly be performed under local anesthesia with same daydischarge, using an incision that is often less than one inch long.
