Rajendra Singh Rahelu

Rajendra Singh Rahelu was only eightmonths old, when he contracted polioand since then he has not been able towalk. He was motivated by his friend topursue a career in weight lifting. Hestarted by lifting a weight of 75 kgs, butrigorous training and motivation madehim strong enough to lift a weight of115 kgs within six months. He hascreated history after winning a silvermedal in power lifting at theCommonwealth Games 2014.

Girish Sharma

Girish Sharma lost a leg in a trainaccident and that too when he was akid. But this great man became thebadminton champion. With even asingle leg, Girish Sharma effortlesslyplays the game and also covers theentire court. Since childhood, he wasalways indulged in outdoor activities,without letting his disability come in theway.

H Ramakrishnan

At the age of two, Ramakrishnan’s bothlegs were affected by polio. He wasdenied admission in the regular school.But in spite of the odds, Ramakrishnanserved as a journalist for over 40-yearsand is currently CEO of SS Musictelevision channel. He is also amusician. To help children withdisabilities, he runs a charitable trustcalled Krupa.

Dr. Satendra Singh

Satendra Singh, an acclaimed doctorcontracted Polio when he was just ninemonths old. He is also aprominent disability activist. He is theman, whose efforts made ATMsdisabled-friendly by constructing ramps.

Sudha Chandran

This Indian actress and classical dancer metwith an accident when she was just 16. Later asmall wound in her ankle, that doctors hadmissed, got infected and there was noalternative left but to amputate her leg. Sheovercame her disability by getting a prosthetic‘Jaipur Foot’. But, even with that prostheticleg, Sudha became one of the most popularand acclaimed classical dancers of India. Shehas performed Bharatnatyam internationally.She has also been a known figure in the Indiantelevision and film industry and has receivedmany awards for her amazing talent.

Ravindra Jain

Ravindra Jain, one of the most notablemusic directors of the 1970s, was bornvisually impaired. He started singing at avery young age and later joined theIndian music industry. Apart fromcomposing many super-hit’ songs forHindi movies, Jain also has many privatealbums.

H. Boniface Prabhu

At the age of four, Prabhu becamequadriplegic for the rest of his life. Butdisabilities could not change his goals oflife. He worked hard and his dedicationhas made him a notable figure and aleading quadriplegic wheelchair tennisplayer. This Padma Shri award winnerwon a medal at the 1998 WorldChampionships.

Sai Prasad Vishwanathan

Vishwanathan lost sensation in thelower half of his body when he was akid. But, nothing could change thestrong determinations of thisenthusiastic man. He became India’sfirst skydiver and has his nameregistered in the Limca Book of Recordsfor being the first Indian with disabilitiesto skydive from 14,000 feet. He has co-founded Sahasra, an organization thatprovides scholarships to potentialunderprivileged students topursue higher studies.

Javed AbidiJaved Abidi was diagnosed with spinabifidia, a developmental congenital disordercaused by the incomplete closing of theembryonic neural tube. But that was notoperated on for eight years and causedpermanent nerve damage. Further injuriesmade the situation worse and made him awheelchair-user when he turned 15. But hecontinued his studies and even went abroadto finish his education and pursue hisdreams of becoming a journalist. He is thefounder of the Disability Rights Group andthe director of the National Centre forPromotion of Employment for DisabledPeople in India.

Dr. Suresh AdvaniDr. Suresh Advani has been in thewheelchair, when he contracted polio at theage of eight. He faced many difficulties topursue his dreams due to his disability. Buthe never gave up and became one of theprominent oncologists. He is credited tostart Hematopoietic Stem CellTransplantation in India. He was honoredwith Padma Shri in 2002 and the PadmaBhushan in 2012, for his notablecontributions in the field of Oncology. He isthe first oncologist in India to havesuccessfully done a bone-marrowtransplant.

Malathi Krishnamurthy HollaShe got paralyzed completely at the tenderage of one, after a high fever. She was underregular shock treatment for two years, thatbrought strengths to her upper body back,but below the waist her body remained weak.But, Malathi decided to accept it and to livelife to the fullest. She chose sports as hercareer. Holla started participating in variousgames in college. She has taken part invarious international events including thePara-Olympics. Holla won Gold in 200m, shotput, discus and javelin throw at the 1989World Masters’ Games in Denmark. She haswon over 300 medals, and the proud recipientof the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.
