Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes
Physical Properties:
The characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical Properties:
Chemical properties describe how substances can form new substances.
Physical Change:
Physical change is a change that in the physical properties of a substance but, does not change the identity of the substance.
Physical Changes
• Clues of Physical Changes:
• A change in shape.• A change in size.• A change in the state or phase of matter.• Dissolving• Sometimes a color change.• Melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation,
condensation, and sublimation.
Scientific Terms• Malleability
• Ductility
• Luster
• Solubility
• Viscosity
• Buoyancy
• Density
• Mass
• Volume
Examples of Physical Changes:
• Ice melting
• A pencil sharpened
• Water boiling
• The formation of dew
• Dissolving Kool-Aid
• A candle melting
Examples of Physical Changes:
Chemical Change:
Chemical change is the change of one substance into another substance.
Chemical Changes
• Clues of Chemical Changes:
• Foaming, fizzing.• A change in odor.• Rapid production of heat, light, or sound.• Color change.• Formation of precipitate.• New substance formed.
Scientific Terms
• Flammability
• Combustibility
• Oxidation
• Reactivity
Examples of Chemical Changes:
• Photosynthesis• Fireworks exploding• Yeast bread rising• A bike rusting• Antacid dissolved in water• Anything burning• Rotting food• Silver tarnishing
