Aims to investigate how undergraduate students, most from the so called Y generation, have been using health related apps and the impact of these new technologies in their physical activity behaviors.
Objective

Y-Generation: do they really work?
Physical Activity and m-Health – Ricardo Oliveira, PhD
• Cross-sectional, descriptive study;• 591 undergraduate students (269 men);• 21 out 35 major disciplines (60%);• Mean age 21±4 years
Methods – Sample

• Data was collected by using 10 question semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the Milennials Pew ResearchCenter*. Questions were related to use of smartphones, health apps and time spent using these technologies.
Methods – Apps use

• To evaluate the physical active behavior, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), which evaluates physical activity and sedentary behaviors, was used. According to the IPAQ results, subjects were classified as insufficiently active (<1000 kcal/week), moderate active (1000 to 2000 kacl/week) and highly active (>2000 kcal/week).
Methods – Physical Activity Behavior

• Demographic characteristics, physical activity and sedentary behaviors between those who use or not health and physical activity related apps were compared using χ2 tests for categorical variables and unpaired t-tests for continuous variables.
