Phyllis Tate was born in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire on 6th April 1911.She studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London with HarryFarjeon (1928-1932) with piano and timpani as secondary studies. Several of herworks, including an opera, were performed while she was at the Academy, buther first public performance was the Cello Concerto in 1934 in Bournemouth. In1947 her for four voices was the first broadcast by the BBC in it’s newThird Programme. In the same year the for clarinet and cello wasperformed at the London Contemporary Music Centre and again at the ISCMFestival in Salzburg in 1952. Her Concerto for Saxophone was given its firstperformance by the Hallé orchestra in 1948 and at theLCMC in 1951. She delighted in unusual chamber ensembles and excelled insolving their inherent musical problems.In 1935 she married Alan Frank, but continued her composing career. From1976-1981 she was on the management committee of the Performing RightsSociety membership fund, the first woman to be appointed. She was also amember of the Composer’s Guild from 1959-1971, serving on its executivecommittee. She died in 1985.
