Pride of place this month just has to be the re- sults form the Inter Provincials and the role that PHSOB bowlers played in the BGN results which has to the best performance of BGN ever. PHSOB can be proud of the contribution of their 8 players in the success. The results are: Ladies B”: Sieska Shelwell and Syta Prinsloo. They won gold in Cape Town. Veteran Men: Kenny, Nico, Robby and Cobus. They won gold in Sables. Ladies Veterans: Louise and Linda. They just missed out of the medals and playoffs in the last session. Leave List Like me you might have noticed that over the recent past there has been a trend to not use the Leave List that is posted weekly on the notice board. This has manifested itself in postponement of games which puts pressure on the Competition Secretary to complete the schedule by the end of the season. Most recently a completely new list of Competition Cardings was necessary. The role of “Competition Secretary” is difficult

enough without this frustration and aggravation.

For whatever reason members who are going away are not putting their names on the leave list and in one or two cas-es they are being difficult about it too. Members who go away for long periods without prior consultation with the Competition Secretary, and those who do not play on Sun-days, exacerbate the problem.

For those in competitions please complete the Leave List before Sunday 13.00 of the week ahead, and most im-portantly, give the reason for your request. If you cannot get to the club in time before the Leave List closing time, how about sending an email, a Whatsapp or an SMS to the Competition Secretary. Perhaps a phone call would not go amiss.

If you are in a difficult spot as far as completing your competition obligation then consider discussing with your opponent the possibility of playing midweek or even at an earlier time to complete the game.

Come on play the game and play your part to prevent the complete re-run of the Competition Cardings.

New Members through Yanks “Academy” Last month I was unable to get photographs from the following new members who were beginners to bowls when they started playing on a Saturday morning with Yank’s group fondly known to me as Yank’s “Academy” Welcome guys and

continue to enjoy your bowls Well done as well to Yank and his team.

Top right is Jabus Craig then clockwise Pieter van der Mer-

we, Liam Craig (left in case you cannot see the likenessto

Jabus) and Niel Coetzee.

Pieter has been in “the acade-my” for about 2 years but has joined as a member because he wants to take bowls more

seriously and to this end he is frequently practising .

Good to see Janette and Bert supporting the event, then Betty du Bruyn, Petra Hoole and Kati de Vlamingh

Daffynitions I have been asked a few times to explain the terms used in bowls and of course the easy way out is to just to reproduce what has already been done before in a handbook etc, which does appear below, but more than that for you lucky readers, all 4 of you, I go a littler further with a so called “daffynition”

A common term used in bowls is the “ Head” which in bowls literature it is defined as “ the area of the rink where the jack, and any live bowls that have been delivered on any particular end.”

The daffynition would be the lump above the shoulder of the bowler called the head, or that in the sand in the pic on the right, to draw ( no pun intended) your attention to the subject.

I am sure that all the experienced bowlers will agree that this head plays as an im-portant part of the game as the common definition, more so perhaps. Arriving in good time for a game, being relaxed, having a cool head, taking your time over a shot and being forced to rush are all part of the mind games going on in the head.

Just as a case in point I was practising on Saturday last week and I could find the right weight going in the one direction (nothing to do with the pop group!) but the other way I was too long. It felt as if I was bowling downhill!. I wondered whether the light breeze had anything to do with it, maybe it was a factor. As I was playing with 2 different coloured jacks the lighter coloured one used for the 2nd direction appeared in my mind to befurther away. It was fortunate that coach Roy Strover was around so I could discuss the problem with him. After some looking around and thinking he drew my attention to the difference in the colour of the rink. In the first direction the rink was greener which would have the effect of slowing up the bowl as it neared the jack, whereas on the return direction the rink was browner with the result that bowl continued to roll for ever., and ever and ever!

Remember “ Think about your game, it is often the shots that you give away and not those that you score that can determine the outcome of a game.”

FROM

THE

Hugh Campbell, above right, was seen playing bowls with the Sat-urday morning group. He says that he is recovering well, although bat-tling a little with his bowls, maybe overdid it a bit. He’s away for a cou-ple or weeks with family from overseas.

Denise Gennisson is back playing bowls after her gall bladder op, Fanie Krynauw is practising again after his slight heart attack , and Mike Bullock is back playing tabs once more.

Beryl Katz is back at the club after surgery, on duty but said driving is painful.

Added to this list are Elzabe Tucker back on the green after her ankle operation as well as Adéle Snyman who is playing excellent bowls right now.

Well done to the Men’s First, Second and Reserve teams who did very well considering the Leave List where there were many key players away. It demonstrates that our

depth of talent in the club.

Well done as well to the Ladies teams who have improved their standings over the past month.

Good bowling to all league teams this week end

Derick Nel pictured recovered well from the removal of a tumour on his lung but has had a setback in that they had to operate a second time to repair a leak in the lung as well as to treat the infection as a result of the first op. Nadia has

requested that no visitors please at this stage

Please contact Nadia 082 471 0277 if you would like to visit.

Percy Janke had a hip re-

placement after a bad fall last week and is on

the mend in Kloof hospital. And the doc wants him to start moving asap but he is

very weak.

Dougie Grant is just resting his knees and hips for a while before coming back

Sitche Tol is having treatment for his leg although he is still bowling as usual but has to be careful.

Paddy Hoole is still having problems with his mobility and balance but we hope to see him on the green again soon.

For the Record. In the March edition under the caption of the “Pancake Team” I listed Glenda Kuhn in the group when it ought to have been Marissa Sheard. My apologies have been

extended to both of them.

I was looking at our calendar the other day, yes in this digital age we still use a calendar that hangs on a kitchen cup-

board in an attempt, mainly successful I have to add, to be on the same page as far as our dates and commitments are concerned. Now where was I? Oh, yes at that time when I was looking at the calendar I asked myself where had the first quarter of the year gone? It just seems like yesterday that we flew into O R Tambo from our Christmas holiday.

And this is the 4th issue of “On the Mat” this year, believe it or not.

Oh well, enjoy!!

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot.

Michael Althsule

You always talk about “more grass”. “Now, son, go and buy

some!” Happy birthday!

I cannot recall what Louise had seen, nei-

ther could you judging from the response,

but how about these socks below? To whom

do they belong?

Patrick Stockwell

Patrick (left) started bowling in Richards Bay in 2011 and was

there for 6 years and he got to play for KZN , in their Presidents

side. Then he moved to Ko-matipoort and played a bit of so-cial bowls at the Komati club be-fore moving to Mossel Bay and

joined their club.

His best achievements are the All Natal – Men’s Fours Gold Medal in 2016 in Margate and the Bronze medal in the Eden Mixed Fours It is no wonder that Patrick is already playing league in our 2nd Division side .
